Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I agree. They must really believe the farm is going to produce what they need. I sure hope Graterol, Duran and Balazovic turn into something this year or next year could be brutal for us.That said, they might be advised to return Romero to the rotation at this point. gil4, laloesch and AceWrigley 3

Splash45 Provisional Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I really like the Hill signing. Dude has a chance to be a great addition down the stretch and potentially a legit postseason starter, all with no risk. Bailey I’m fine with as the 5th starter. Otwins and cmoss84 2

jorgenswest Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 They have to wait for the season to start to place Hill on the 60 day IL. So they can't free up a roster spot until then.I believe it is start of spring training but maybe that is what you meant be season.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 With Hill and Pineda out to begin the year, I think it's more likely the Twins swing a trade. I know the rotation could get crowded at some point, but the good teams like rotation depth and have no problem shuttling good-not-great rotation vets out to the pen when needed. wabene, DocBauer, Twins33 and 4 others 7
wabene Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 Kind of impossible to grade an off season before it is over. You really can't even access something like a mid-term grade because you don't have the full context yet. We're still 2 days away from the day they signed Cruz last year. Just sayin. jrod23 Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I’m bored and underwhelmed. I understand we’re not a top free agent destination, but when will that EVER change?!?!With that said, I’m extremely excited about our pitching crop coming up. It’s healthy in numbers and healthy on the stat sheet. Just would be nice if when they cut their teeth, they do so while making a positive impact. alphanumeric 1

howeda7 Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I can be OK with this if we either sign Donaldson or trade for Price. Otherwise, we're $20 million under budget dumpster diving like we never left the Dome. mshnd06, sweetmusicviola16, SF Twins Fan and 7 others 10

We did the same with Pineda a couple years ago -- signed him in December, put him on the 60-day IL in February.

I know the rotation could get crowded at some point, but the good teams like rotation depth and have no problem shuttling good-not-great rotation vets out to the pen when needed. With Hill, Pineda, and a soon to be 34 year old Bailey, I'm not overly concerned about the rotation getting too crowded (even if another starter is added through a trade). bighat Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 Correction: Hill's left-handed, I think the author knows that too but it lists him as a right-hander. Bailey's kind of a filler guy, seems to be a Gibson clone. Hill's best years are behind him. Twins appear to be happy to try and keep the ship afloat with bubble gum and duct tape. ashbury Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I missed that Hill had surgery after the season. I saw that he had come back and pitched in September, and thought he'd be good to go. That leaves Opening Day still a mess for the rotation, even adding Bailey as a stopgap. I see the point for signing Bailey, I really don't for Hill. SF Twins Fan, dbminn, laloesch and 3 others 6

Tomorrow: Why Bailey is actually better than MadBaum and Hill is better than Kuechel! I'm not sure if that last bit was also sarcasm, but yeah, I wanted nothing to do with Kuechel and next to nothing to do with Bumgarner, so I do prefer this. Harrison Greeley III Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 Only 35 starting pitchers posted a higher WAR in 2019 than Bailey's 2.9. He was ahead of Jon Lester, Robbie Ray, Yu Darvish, Sandy Alcantara, and Wade Miley among others. Madison Bumgarner posted a 3.2 in comparison.Whether you want to perceive it or not, Homer Bailey is an 'impact' pitching signing and a really great move by this front office. SwainZag Community Moderator Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 A lot of hand wringing for them signing 2 pitchers AND it's only New Years. Hill could have a big impact when he comes back mid-season and Bailey is a depth back of the rotation type arm. There is still plenty of time to swing a trade, it's not Opening Day. Now sign Donaldson and swing a trade for another SP. Lasorda_This_Out, flags, Eephus and 7 others 10

howeda7 Verified Member Posted December 31, 2019 Posted December 31, 2019 I seriously doubt there will be a trade coming. But if there is, it makes sense to do the signing first. You really can't even access something like a mid-term grade because you don't have the full context yet. We're still 2 days away from the day they signed Cruz last year. Just sayin. True, although Cruz was just a 1 year FA deal himself. And after Cruz, we signed Parker, Perez, and Marwin -- interesting moves but probably of limited impact. I wouldn't say that example suggests a lot more "impact" activity remains this winter. In My La Z boy, jud6312, SF Twins Fan and 1 other 4
