Tyler Duffey Waived

He was given plenty of opportunity to work through his issues, whatever they are. It just didn’t happen. Sands will slot in as a long reliever, I presume.

"I think the Twins are definitely impacted by the tenure of the player. I didn't see them just DFAing Sano and I doubt they'll do that with Duffey. I'm trying to think of any tenured veteran they've done that to and coming up empty (I may be totally off-base here). They will just stash Duffey in low leverage situations till the end of the year and say goodbye after the season. Duffey can eat some innings and not hurt the team."

I posted this yesterday and I'm clearly wrong. It's too bad, but probably necessary.

Writing was on the wall when he was left in to suck up the 9th last night. I speculated as much in the game thread.

Long overdue, IYAM.

He just had nothing.

Sidenote: 2nd all time to Doug Ma3rdnkay...Doug Mienkaov... ...2nd all time to Douggie Baseball on the list of "Most often misspelled Twin" list?

I think this is the right move.  I have said it before I like Duffey and have great respect for what he has been able to do at the MLB level but the Twins gave him a looong leash from essentially last year to figure things out.  He is just giving up tooo much solid contact to say the numbers are a mirage or might change.  I don't know what changed from his dominant years but right now we need all the arms in the pen to at least make things difficult for the other team. It was always fingers crossed that hard hit balls found a glove when he was on the mound. Thank you FO for making this change and giving the team a better chance!

It's sad on the human side of the game.

But if the Twins actually pull it off this year, I believe he stills gets a ring.

Is he also the union rep since the Rogers trade, or did I make that up?

Duffey has been around for a long time and seems like a really good dude. Seems to have been a good teammate and gave the Twins a lot so it's unfortunate things ended this way, but he just didn't seem to have anything left  in the tank. He did some really good things for the Twins over the years, though. Wish him well and hope he can revive his career for another couple years somewhere else.

I'm sorry to see this from a human standpoint but it had to be done. He was actively hurting the team and you have to show the court in the clubhouse that players who are helping the team can't be on the team. That's what you do if you believe in your team's chances; you always try to improve on the margins. I hope we can catch on somewhere else and maybe even make a comeback.

Who is the replacement? I don't think either Cotton or Moran have been gone long enough to be brought back unless there is an injury. We've already used one of Sands option years so is it him? Can't seem to find it anywhere.

This is a bummer in a lot of ways. It did have to be done, but it is sad to see how far he has slipped from a couple years ago where he was one of the best relievers in the league. The one-two punch of Rogers and Duffey was very nice for a bit, and it is sad to see him go. Hopefully he can recapture some of his electric stuff somewhere else (preferably somewhere in the National League).

Sorry it had to happen but it kinda had to happen.

Yep, it did indeed need to happen. I will always hold Duffey in high regard for his comments about the vile Yankee fans. That won him a place in my heart. But his velo and stuff just aren't there any more. Wishing him all best

This was bound to happen. I thought it was going to happen much earlier but then he put together a really good month between the middle of June and July. Do what's needed to win the division...right call

Who is this Duffy guy that I keep reading posts about? Is he kind of like Duffey, but somehow different? If Duffy is better than Duffey, maybe we can keep Duffy and get rid of Duffey. Anyway, I do feel bad for the guy, but he HAD to go. He was killing us.

Thanks for your accomplishments and efforts Mr. Duffey. You pitched many good innings for the Twins and always gave your best. Better yet, you are a great person.

Wow, I didn't know Duffey was held in such high esteem.  I always thought of him as a marginal pitcher.  a guy who had to always prove he belonged.  His luck ran out, and he can pursue other endeavors.  But, I hope he never enters Target Field again, unless he's purchased a ticket.   He's been eulogized on this forum way too graciously, IMO.  I would be hard pressed to remember more than a few occasions when he was good to outstanding.

He was legitimately great between 2019 and 2020. Combined ERA+ 194 in a fireman's role. Great peripherals too. I think you're having selective memory

Pagan will hang around a bit longer as they can still have an option on him for next season. Plus you can afford one mop-up guy in the pen.

Duffey is to be a free agent.

Moran has to stay in the minors for 15 days unless he is an injury replacement.

The Twins could bring back Cotton once again. But he is currently on waivers. Dufey being gone opens up a 40-man spot. The Twins might also be able to claim someone else that is being jettisoned by another team.

Yes, Sands is up to be long relief.

It's a bummer, but if the Twins were getting serious about having a playoff bullpen, it had to happen. Surely Pagan is next, I can't imagine he has much slack left. Megill is on thin ice as well, but like Pagan, he can at least point to having really good stuff. Duffey just doesn't.

Across those three, I'd be surprised if the Twins don't end the season having replaced at least two, but probably three, with some mixture of Maeda, Moran, and either Sisk or Sands.

Assuming Sands is a placekeeper until they  can recall Moran as he was just sent down and can't be recalled for 10 days.

It’s a shame how quickly Duffey fell off.

He really did. Makes me wonder if he was a sticky stuff user.
