I have often wondered about the obsession with velocity in today's game. There is ample suggestion that the increase in velocity and focus on max effort is responsible for the increase in TJ and other arm issues across MLB. The Twins have shown skill in increasing the velocity of many, many pitchers that they have developed. Is it possible for them to use Ryan as a model and 'develop' them to have more deception and movement or is Ryan a unicorn? If they were able to do so would this provide a means to keep them on the mound (the hypothesis here is that arm health would be positively impacted by doing so)? Could overall pitcher health/longevity be enhanced by a shift from velocity to deception/movement??

I will mildly disagree. I think is is a great feature and am fine with it being a weekly offering!

A trade of any of these pitchers should be based on whether or not it is a good baseball trade and not on salary considerations. With the team for sale, there is a good chance we have new owners a year from now. If new owners want a low payroll trading these guys in a year can accomplish that. If they want to invest in payroll, the expected payroll crunch goes away and we retain some very good young pitching.

A sad thing about the rule change regarding Sept call-ups is the impact the rule has on rewarding long-time organizational minor leaguers with a taste of the majors. Think Tommy Watkins. Whether it’s Helman or Kersey that helps the team more, in the old days both could have been rewarded with a Sept call-up.

I don’t disagree at all with the choice for pitcher of the day, but it’s not every day that a pitching line like Zebby’s falls short of the prize! 60 day for C Lewis? That can’t be good…

Paulshawn Pasqualotto (I take it back; now that is a baseball name) A pretty poor day on the farm (the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree?)…would not be much fun to read about but saved by Matt’s usual fine writing.

Despite fan impatience I think the delay in the free-agent signings and thus the delay in the trade market benefits the Twins. With the uncertainty in tv deal/payroll, an opening up of the trade market now could handcuff the Twins: do they make trades that cut, maintain or increase payroll? If the market opens up after there is better visibility on revenue then they can approach the trade market with better certainty.

Internal Options to Replace Sonny Gray
Tiantwindup replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If he signs a 3 or 4 year deal at, for example, $20M/yr he still has the option to decide each year if he wants to pitch or go home. The contract does not force him to play.- 51 replies

This has to be one of the weakest set of minor leaguers we have sent to the AFL and, sadly, it’s showing in their performance thus far.

Key question, Seth. If Twins put in claims on, say, 6 players and get every one of them, do they have to add all 6 to the 40-man (and thus remove some solid players from the 40-man) or can they pick, say, there 3 favorites to keep and put the other 3 on waivers?

QO to Sonny, sign Maeda and Mahle. I don’t understand the argument that the Mahle trade was horrible so let him go. Whether we traded a bag of balls or our entire farm system to get him is irrelevant; the question is should we sign him now and I say yes if it’s something along the lines of the Pineda and Paddock deals.

De Andrade has his batting average up to .259 and just turned 19 in April. Gotta believe he will be moving up the prospect list in the next update.

Given the lost season, one would think that the high school evaluations would be even tougher than the college ones. Yet at this point (and it is still early), it is this draft’s high school picks that look to be solid and the college picks to be underwhelming.
