Update: Dobnak to 60-day IL, Twins claim RHP Jhon Romero

I would recommend the surgery and then put he on the 60 day DL.  Best outcome and with a 30 day rehab, we may see what we have.

That was a wasted 6 months. I guess that takes him out of the running for opening day starter, eh? I don't know why it is too bad someone got paid some of a billionsires spare change, regardless of how good he is or whether he is hurt, and I am not a Dobnak fan. I hope for a better option, anyway, but do not wish him an injury,

I hope Rogers doesn't suffer the same fate.

I'd DFA and release him. The roster spot is more valuable than the loss of MiLB or minimum MLB salary if he manages to earn his way back onto a roster in the future.

The Twins gave Dobber a five year contract.  They owe over $8 million (if they buy him out for the 2026 season.  Not bad for the former Uber driver.  Let me know if there is any way for the Twins to opt out for less. I didn’t see it.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't see $8m over the next 5 seasons as something requiring a roster spot.

There must be some concern around having this surgery as I cannot believe that he wouldn't have chosen to do surgery before this point if it was an easy surgery.  He must be afraid that surgery will affect his grip or feel for pitching.  He seems like a nice guy.  I hope he recovers and can get back to the mound.

That is extremely short sighted. It is the reason the 60 day DL exists.

Seems the most logical way to proceed

Unless… can he pitch left handed!?

Well ... I know someone who was having arm/shoulder issues and switched from being a righty to a left tennis player. But, that was far from the pro level. She did pretty well. And when her right side was rested, her left side started acting up so she switched back. Crazy. No way I'd do something like that.

I hate to agree with you but given all the pitchers coming up that seem to have better stuff I think we are going to need that roster space.  They can do the 60 day DL etc for this season but by seasons end I don't think there is going to be room on the 40 man for a guy that is still an unknown with limited upside.

Maybe if the Twins trade a bunch of pitching for Montas that changes things somewhat but it is looking harder to see a future for Dobnak past this year.

I believe they can still outright Dobnak off the roster if he isn't claimed on waivers (he wouldn't be claimed on waivers).

I don’t think they can put him through waivers while he is injured, though, at least not during spring training or the season.

I'm still scratching my head about them signing him for 5 years. Based on what? 10 starts from 2019?

Yeah, he's a great story and all but this is MLB, not American Idol...

The Falvey front office has shown an interest in accumulating pitchers with different skill sets. Not counting last year, Dobnak had the skill at suppressing flyballs. Something like a 55% ground all rate, which translates to something like a sub 4 FIP. When he's healthy he's shown the ability to be a major league pitcher. And at a cheap cost it was a worthwhile endeavour.

I wonder if there had not been the lockout if he would have met with team docs well before spring to determine best route.  It may have been bothering him all winter, but most likely he could not on his own just decide to get surgery outside of team docs giving input without risk of voiding his contract.  I would assume there is something in all contracts that the team at least needs to give input on surgery decisions.

I really like the Dobnak story and I am happy he got paid, but I never wanted him in the rotation.  His bubble has already burst.  Get a young arm with upside into the rotation.

They just need to find the customer service button and claim they ordered a regular Uber but got conned when an Uber XL showed up. Might get a partial refund.

Indeed, we seem to forget that we’re talking about humans.

Wishing Dobber well. Hoping he can get his finger surgically repaired somehow and put him on the 60.

It was a low risk, decent upside play.

And frankly, I'm still not convinced it wasn't a savvy signing. We literally haven't seen Dobnak healthy for a decent stretch since that time - which sucks but can happen to any pitcher - and I still think he's a capable pitcher if he can ever get healthy.

And Randy is an eminently likable character with a fantastic story. If, at the end of a few years, the Twins essentially donated a few million dollars to him, all I can say is "cool".

Everyone saying "just have the surgery".....humans like to avoid cutting into their bodies if it can be avoided. They tried not doing that, and may continue to try that. I'm ok with that.

As for the signing, I never got it, but....it is a drop in the bucket. If he'd stay healthy, it would be hailed as a genius move, imo.
