According to Tommy Birch from the Des Moines Register, the Twins have acquired Giants relief pitcher Sam Dyson from the Giants.

The Twins traded OF Jaylin Davis and right-handed pitchers Kai-Wei Teng and Prelander Berroa. In 49 games (51 innings), 31-year-old Sam Dyson is 4-1 with a 2.47 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP He's got seven walks and 47 strikeouts. Dyson also has one more year of arbitration remaining.

The Twins had need in the bullpen and they added two arms that can work in the late innings.

Jaylin Davis was well on his way to Twins Minor League Hitter of the Year this season. He began in AA Pensacola. He moved up to Rochester where he has hit over .330 and 15 homers in 41 games. Overall, he's not 25 homers in 99 games.

Kai-Wei Teng, a righty from Taiwan, joined the Kernels less than two months ago. He was 4-0 with a 1.60 ERA in 9 games (8 starts). He was flashing 96 mph with his fastball.

Prelander Berroa was the Elizabethton Twins opening day starter. The hard-throwing 19-year-old was 2-1 with a 4.55 ERA. He had 37 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings.

The Twins got better today.

Not a flashy bullpen, but it is much better than where we were at two weeks ago.

We now have

Rogers

Dyson

Romo

Duffey

at the back end of our bullpen, plus Martin Perez in the postseason. Not bad. Not flashy, but not bad at all. Would have LOVED to get Robbie Ray, but I think that was a dream.

Love Dyson's K/BB and WHIP this year, and he's kept it in the park. Probably his best season to date, and I want a hot hand if we're nabbing a reliever at the deadline. Plus he's controlled through 2020. Bonus that we didn't give up anybody in the top 30, and I think Davis would've had to have been protected this fall.

Still wanted more, but I like this trade in vacuum.

Losing Davis is tough, yet, means the Twins get to keep someone else when the 40-man crunch comes in November.  And who knows, maybe they wouldn't have room to add Davis and he would be gone anyway.

Personally, am gonna miss Teng.  This kid had been great since his callup to Cedar Rapids.  Have a feeling the Giants got a future starter...but hey, you have to give up something to get a good arm back.

Is Dyson a rental?  Or under contract beyond this year?

Davis is EXACTLY the kind of trade chip I hoped they would use. Not because he's a bad player, but he is duplicated too much by others in the system.

I never like being the one to part with two young pitchers, but those are the coin of the realm. If they're the difference between making this trade, and not, then I think I'm fine with it. I leave it to the talent evaluators to determine which future Cy Young not to trade.

Solid trade, added a solid veteran and didn't give up any top prospects to get him. Jaylin Davis is having a big year, but wasn't a top prospect and was blocked at the MLB level. Prelander Berroa and Kai-Wei Teng are basically lotto tickets-good young arms but a long ways off.

Astros gave up their 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 22nd prospects (MLB.com rankings) for Greinke. The 3rd (Seth Beer) is the overall #100 (Larnach is the overall #97).

AND they're paying $50 million of the $75 owed Greinke the remainder of his contract.

Not a big Dyson fan, but the only other relievers that went today that I had any interest in were Hudson and Elias so I'm not going to sweat which of the plan C options the team got.

I really hope they get him to emphasize the cutter usage over the two seamer though.

Twins did enough to be a credible playoff team.

They won't win the World Series this year but at least they might win one playoff series and get their young guys some good experience.

Look at Houston and realize what a team needs to compete with the Dodgers, Red Sox and Yankees: great starting pitching, long lineup, quality defense at every position and a knock-out bullpen.

We ain't got that.
