Correa open to long-term deal with Twins

From a Ken Rosenthal piece in the Athletic, here is the money quote:

“I told ‘em, ‘Hey guys, I know I have the opt-outs in the contract. But I really like it here,’” Correa said. “‘I love the people here. I love the way I’m treated here. If you guys see the value I bring to this organization and what I do for other people around me and the game that I bring, I would love to have a long-term relationship here if that’s what you guys would like.’

“My wife feels right at home in Minnesota. My son is growing up. We feel right at home already and it’s only been two or three weeks of the season. That’s where I’m at mentally.”

Ok…how fun would it be to have Buxton and Correa playing together for the next half dozen years?  After a couple of World Series rings, will we even remember the pre-B.C. years?

With Buck and Carlos, staying, I might even move from North Carolina to Minneapolis for mid-April through mid-October and Ft. Myers the rest of the time. I need a downtown Minneapolis condo near the ball park with indoor parking, and a Sanibel waterfront home  in Florida.  Oh yeah... plus I need 4-5 million bucks.

Well it's certainly good to hear he likes it here. Been a rough April weather wise too.

I'm guessing that long term deal he's talking about is still something like 30M/year though.

Which is $5mm less than they’ve committed to pay him for the next three years…

With Ober, Ryan on the cheap, and Hopefully Winder, and another starter pitching prospect or two, it seems like the right time to sign somebody to a contract this side.

As much as I'd love to see it happen, I don't know how much I'd read into this report right now. It's pretty early in his first season here. Plenty could happen along the way to change things. He's been here a month...let's give it a bit of time.

Well if he still is standing by the 10 year 300 mil plus he was seeking, he better starting doing better.  I am pretty sure he has hit into more DP than anyone else on our team.  He has 5 already in 14 games.  Well on pace for most of his career.  I doubt he will continue to hit like he has, but at negative WAR, we could put just about anyone out there to hit and they could do better.  I am still happy he is hear, but I would not be talking long term at this point. If he plays like this all year, he will not be opting out at all, he will the next season to bounce back.

I don't think I love the idea of paying Correa more than Buxton.  I know it shouldn't matter but the optics don't look good to me.  I know I am way more risk averse than most people, but I don't think I want Correa at 30M per year for 7 to 10 years.  I really, really like the guy but we will be paying a premium for out of prime years and I don't feel like that is something this team can afford.  I like the deal we have for him right now.  Would love to have him all three prime years but I think that would be it for me.

I think that Correa is going to go to whatever team offers him the most money after this season, but I also think he'd prefer for that team to be the Twins, if only because moving around is inconvenient and he's thinking about where he wants to raise his kid.

He's saying all the right things. What do we expect him to say?  "I wanted a 10/350 deal from the Yankees but the lockout and shortened time made that impossible so I settled and signed with a poor team and I don't really think I'll be here after this year because it's freaking cold in MN and the fans don't show up anyway."

He does seem to be a good clubhouse addition and I don't doubt his bat will warm up. I still think he's here only this year but he knows he can't alienate any fan bases.

He's one of the 15 best players in baseball. It'd be great for him and Buxton (and a few others) to be the next core. I can't imagine it happening but it'd be great.

Correa's kid was born in late November, so it's not much older than his Twins contract at this point.  So the kid will remain blissfully unaware of ever living in Minnesota if Correa moves on before next winter.

Previously, Correa lived in Houston year-round -- he is selling his home there, although judging by the listing, he might have been looking to upgrade anyway.

He seems to genuinely like it here and appears to have already formed a really good relationship with Buxton, as evidenced by him calming down Buxton and helping him get his head right mid-game and then shouting "BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD" at Buxton after he walked it off.

I find myself liking Carlos Correa more than I ever expected. He seems like a really positive influence on the team, which definitely may not have been the case when dealing with a highly paid player on a huge contract who can't hit his way out of a wet paper bag.

I don't think I'd expect him to answer that any other way...

...that said I'm glad that he did answer it the way that he did.  It does come off as genuine.  It would be fun to see those two play together for an extended run and see where it goes.

Yeah, obviously baby Kylo's not personally attached to Minnesota, but Minnesota is generally regarded as a better place to raise kids than, say, New York. I don't think that'll be a factor if he has the chance to move someplace warmer/more competitive that also seems like a wholesome place for a baby (or someplace that offers more money).

If he does stick around, my daughter who was born in late November is looking for friends.

You'll need more than 4-5 million bucks. The taxes in Minnesota are horrible!

I think that regard generally has to do with affordable housing, public education, poverty rate, health/safety, etc. -- all things that won't really apply to Correa in his income bracket.

They could do like Correa -- agree to 4-5 million up front, but then signal your willingness to accept ten times that.

She also needs some infield defense tips. Until she learns to walk her ceiling is DH who gets on base a lot due to extremely small strike zone.

The issue is the Twins went into the deal with a 1 year or 1/2 year mindset.  This was to give Lewis more time,  and Lewis looks very very good.  I like Correa,  I actually think he has played really well and brings a calm leadership to the Twins,  but with Lewis coming up the pipeline this is just not a likely proposition unless Correa likes it so well he makes a sweetheart deal.  With Boras as his agent the odds of that are slim to none.  Then you would likely have to trade Lewis. So effectively you have a player who even though I think has played well, isn't playing up to the contract and is slightly worried the money won't be there if these stats keep up (I think he will warm up in a big way).  I also think he genuinely likes it in Minnesota (other than the cold temps- although he hasn't experienced a true Minnesota winter).   I would actually like a long term contract in the 22 million range for 6-7 years.  If he is willing to add 3-4 more years for an additional 45-60 million on the contract it would be interesting.

Yeah.  I didn't really expect a different answer, but I appreciate the way he said it.

Would be nice to see what this team could look like with Correa and Buxton as the foundation.
