So says the Athletic's Dan Hayes:  https://theathletic.com/784109/2019/01/24/byron-buxton-twins-moving-on-reset-button-rocco-baldelli-paul-molitor/

Buxton says he's done so to provide more padding for every time he runs into a wall at full speed or dives for a sinking liner up the middle.

Holy crap. Also reports that he's been spending 5 hours a day in the weight room and 90 minutes a day hitting.  His agent says it is the hardest he's ever seen him working out.

Rowson says the muscle/weight he's put on is quite noticeable.

I wasn't expecting to see "best shape of his life" reports in January, but I guess spring training is right around the corner.

"Wait, you can do that?"

- Bartolo Colon

I'll be sad if he loses any speed.

There's always a trade off ... but then maybe when he runs into walls he won't be going quite as fast ...

Some high-powered public relations firm needs to hire you to do their spin!

So true. I, for one, would not be first in line for a Colon steak.

It's a very good article if anyone of you have a subscription to The Athletic. Does should like he's trying to move on from all of the troubles of last year, but also sounds like he's still pretty upset with upper management.

Over the last few years, I've added about 21 pounds of padding with some weight lifting as well. It was mostly a lot of low-weight repetitions with a spoonful of ice cream.

Are you on the 12 oz arm curl program too?! Sometimes 16 oz?

Not in the same session, I presume, but cross-training is crucial, yes.

Can't wait to see him hit.

Going back to that leg kick?

Or is he going to Mollie it again this year?

Read as much as you want, nothing will tell more than how he looks, feels and swings in the box.

You go Buck. It's your day.

The article was very good. Lots of interesting tidbits. He said the motivation to get stronger was the fact that he only played in 12 games last year and couldn’t stay on the field. Excited about the new acquisitions. Met with Baldelli, who showed up in Baxley...without realizing that he scheduled his visit on Buxton’s 25th birthday. Buxton was mad that he missed the end of Mauer’s career. He used to start hitting in January, but this offseason he started in October.

You can’t really read that article as a Twins fan and not feel optimistic about his upcoming season.

Someone is going to need to photoshap Byron Buxton's body now.  It's the only proper conclusion to this thread.

Great fodder for Spring Training Media...

"Buxton looks great."

I think Mauer and Delmon Young both "looked great" at the beginning of Spring Training at one point as well.

Think Buck is now timed at 12.4 seconds to first base.

Just slightly slower than Victor Martinez was before he retired.

Hmm ... not the sort of "news" that necessarily is a harbinger for improved results. Will the weight gain help him strike out less? Prevent him from running recklessly into walls? As one poster already mentioned, I hope this doesn't detract from speed on the base paths or roaming center field. I'd be more excited to hear that Sano has LOST some weight.

running into a wall is an elastic collision. more muscle is not going to change that.

Nope, very much an inelastic collision.  I believe muscle does actually help with absorbing blows, such as a collision with a wall.
