Don’t understand the logic with Correa? If we didn’t draw last year with him, that can’t be good reasoning going forward. If team isn’t extremely successful, Correa will be the “hated, greedy SOB” that sunk our payroll & FO will be run out of town! We want to develop players internally and we have 3 solid SS prospects in farm system. If Farmer plays well, Lewis is an option as back-up in CF & starter in LF. Spend the $ on a Catcher, a Starter, & decent reliever, if available. With a solid starter we can drop Maeda into pen for experienced, quality depth!! Why do you assume they aren't attempting to get a catcher or trade Kepler while also negotiating with Correa? There's already multiple reports that they've offered Christian Vazquez a contract. Many reports about talks with multiple teams on trades of multiple players. They don't need to draw a deadline on Correa to make other deals. They can work on multiple things at once. Yeah, they offered Vazquez a contract but I suspect it was a low ball number assuming that they have to pay CC millions. If they give CC a deadline and he moves on from the Twins, then they can bring their offer to Vazquez up to a more appropriate level. It's just like our home budget. If we purchase a new furnace, then we probably cannot upgrade our car. I.e. one decision impacts the other decisions is all that I am saying. They are not done independently of each other when there is limited resources available. The Twins have numbers they're willing to go to on everyone they're interested in. They know which ones they can fit into their budget in what combination. They are pretty notorious for not going above their number on guys. Especially someone like Vazquez. They wouldn't overpay for him even if they weren't in on Correa. There's no reason to assume they were significantly under market on Vazquez. What do you base your assumption that "it was a low ball number" and not at an "appropriate level" on? The house analogy is missing a lot of context. Were the furnace and car upgrade planned purchases with in depth pricing done to have a good estimation of what each would cost, or at least what you're willing to pay for each? Cuz the Twins, and every team, have done that math. The Twins aren't suddenly going to offer Vazquez twice as much because they miss on Correa. They know what they feel his worth is and the max they'll go for him. They know that max fits next to the max they'll go for Correa. The decisions weren't made independently, but the math doesn't change anymore. If either market goes above their already determined maxes they walk away. You're absolutely 100% correct and I agree completely. That's the way the Twins do business. Imo, the thing/problem is...there's always going to be a team, and possibly several teams, that ARE willing to overpay for a player. Sometimes you have to be willing to do that, to get what you want. The Twins need to be flexible enough to make an exception, when the situation dictates it. I'm not saying that they should way overpay for Correa, or Vasquez, or whomever...just that they need to consider doing that, rather than having a flat, cutoff dollar figure. chpettit19, MN_ExPat, DocBauer and 1 other 4

Or they need to adjust their math and be better at predicting what it will take to get guys and not waste time on guys who's market they won't be willing to pay up to. Every team reaches a cutoff point on every player eventually. The question is how high your cutoff point is. The Twins sometimes feel like they drastically underestimate player's markets. Part of the hold up is likely also how much time they're willing to promise him. Rumors are that he doesn't want a "time share" like the Twins prefer, but wants a 3+ year deal where he's the clear cut starter and gets to catch as much as he can handle. But Correa signing would certainly also help. SwainZag and D.C Twins 2

That is not the Twins as presently configured. That could be the Twins with Correa, Vazquez, PLUS a strong SP and some BP help. My guess is that both are waiting to see what else the club does before seriously considering the Twins as their destination. Let's face it, they both have time to wait. Then we can get the issue of that 4th year for Vazquez or 10th for Correa. CarpetGuy and Richie the Rally Goat 2
Hawkeye Bean Counter Verified Member Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 The Twins have a contract offer of 285 million for 10 years. This has been reported by a couple people. Based on that information, the Twins have the best offer currently on the table. The only interested party at this point that could be willing to outbid is the Giants. However if they were willing to outbid, I thought they would have done it by now. Boras has a history of going directly to the owners to try to increase the contract, I don't think that will work with the Twins. It could possibly work with the Giants or another team that were to get involved. I think the Twins feel comfortable waiting this out right now. I could see Correa signing a 4 to 6 year contract with opt outs and trying again, but it is fairly clear his past history is limiting the number of teams interested in him. He has stated he prefers a long term contract. When you knock out the Dodgers, Houston, Red Sox and Yankees, and the Padres are willing to get Bogaerts instead of you, that really limits the teams willing to spend big on you. Just think where he would be at if the Twins weren't willing to go big, 225-250mil maybe??? D.C Twins, Doctor Gast and TopGunn#22 3

It's pretty clear Vasquez doesn't want to be in a relatively even timeshare, and that's the approach the Twins have steered towards. Money, years, and in this case playing time rule the day. If Miami decided to grant him all three wishes he'd be a Marlin today. That's how this works. chpettit19 1
