The options would appear to be:

1.) Nelson Cruz to the IL?

2.) Jonathan Schoop, Ehire Adrianza, or someone else?

3.) Ehire Adrianza DFAd.

Arraez can just flat-out hit!!

I'd guess Adrianza is hurt, or maybe Schoop (he did have that shoulder issue a few days ago, and was 0-for-5 last night with 3 K's).

edit: or Cruz, he hasn't played since May 12th, so if they plan to keep him out through May 22nd anyway, they might as well make a move?

My theory: they hope that Arraez can cut down on his strikeouts by working with Astudillo. :)

Arraez has a 8.4% K% in his minor league career. Sort of a less extreme, pre-power version of Astudillo.

Arraez's career minor league stat line is like Zack Granite's, but about +40 points of AVG. He's been able to more consistently keep a .350+ BABIP.

It's better that Cruz has a DL stint now rather than later down the season. Twins will miss him, but judging by past games I think we'll be okay until he recovers. I'm excited to see how Arraez does.

With the way the offense is just raking, better off letting Cruz heal, even if it's just a precautionary measure.

Good for Arraez. Just 5 more days needed for Cruz if its retroactive. Figure he's back for the start of the next homestand 5/24. Unless its worse than reported

Excellent! He may not have a high ceiling, but I always like these high contact guys to have a high floor. If he can make consistent contact I like his chances of sticking around awhile.

Cruz said his wrist was feeling fine yesterday after he took swings. My guess is that Twins just wanted Cruz to get some extra rest and free up the DH spot for Sano while he adjusts to the majors. Arraez will give the Twins some depth if Sano needs a rest.

What I figured as well for the extra rest for Cruz. It being 5 days since he last played already, why not give him the extra time.

He'll go sleep it off in the nap room. No worries!

With Nick Gordon on the IL, Torreyes innactive, and Cave just being optioned I guess the choice for a position player to call up came down to Arraez or Wade. Since the Twins will be seeing three lefty starters in row I'm doubting Arraez gets much playing time this series.

Yes, IL - until injured people get offended by the name because people like Adelberto Mejia aren't actually injured.

Congratulations to Arraez!  It'll be fun to see him get some chances!

Actually, a player can be recalled within 10 days of being optioned if he's replacing a player going on the DL IL, so Cave was also an option. He's been ice cold all year, though. Torreyes too. And Wade hasn't done much at AAA but draw walks, even with the juiced ball. And we're already at 13 pitchers.

Not that Arraez isn't interesting in his own right!

Good move too. Seems to me we've seen plenty of cases in this league where a guy plays through a wrist injury and it saps his power all year.

If Arraez makes a good impression do we leave him up when Cruz comes back and DFA Adrianza? Or do we keep Adrianza so we can have some defensive stability? I'll be interested to see how that plays out.

I was looking at Arraez's stats and realized he's only 22, that's 2-3 years younger than Rooker, Raley, and Wade. He also missed pretty much the full year in 2017, so making it to the majors this fast is a significant achievement.

Likely a quick look-see at this kid.

They're not DFA'ing Adrianza. This is just going to be a quick look at this kid. Odd move because he hits lefthanded and the Twins will be going against lefties for the next 3 days. Might be here for 2 series, play sparingly, then go back down. Nothing wrong with the move, but I don't expect to see him play much. Maybe start one game if that, put him in if there's a blowout.

Good for Arraez. mlb trade rumors did mention that he might be a potential replacement for Ehire. Adrianza actually has been hitting better lately, so I think this is just a cup of coffee until Cruz comes off the IL. Kinda surprised they didn't recall Cave, but this kid is more versatile and perhaps they want Cave to get it going in AAA before coming back.

He reminds a little bit of Polanco when he was in the minors.  Not a lot of power but great bat to ball skills and good eye at the plate.  He might never develop Polanco's power but he seems like a good bet to be a very good hitter. His high floor low ceiling profile makes sense for a call up.  I hope he gets a chance to play as it would be nice to see how he handles MLB pitching.

Arraez is the Twins' second baseman of the future (and the future might start at 2020) so he needs to play mostly every day.  The Twins did not recall him to sit him.  He will likely rotate with Schoop between second and DH.  With Garver out now, Astudillo is a catcher, so the Twins have positional flexibility between Gonzalez and Adrianza mostly.
