stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 2, 2023 Posted August 2, 2023 The news yesterday that both Alex Kirilloff and Brock Stewart underwent MRIs brings back flashbacks of last year to me. Kirilloff wasn’t expected to go the IL and then was thought to be on the list for the minimum 10 days. Now it looks like a much longer duration on the list with the possibility that things might be even more serious. Most expected Stewart back by now and his arm injury is lingering. The prognosis for others on the Il range from pretty positive (Lewis) to radio silence (Miranda, Alcalá, Gordon). How many of these guys will see the field this year? JD-TWINS Verified Member Posted August 2, 2023 Posted August 2, 2023 Can’t imagine they sat Kirilloff a day & then played him before the IL if it’s really serious. 2-3 weeks hopefully he’s swinging comfortably again! Miranda isn’t helping us. Alcala was written off. Gordon is not expected to contribute this year. Sounds like Stewart will not be back. Lewis is a big key - need him to lengthen the line-up. The Twins' official site did update Gordon's status yesterday, pretty much what was written by cbssports.com. It looks like a September 1 activation to me, unless injuries open a spot on the roster earlier. TopGunn#22, East Coast Twin and FlyingFinn 3

TopGunn#22 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Everything we could be getting from Gordon and more (like nearly 30 SB's) we're getting from Willi Castro. Can't see Gordon offering much, but hey, he would be a massive upgrade on Joey Gallo. After needing to PH Solano for him with a RH pitcher on the mound in the 8th inning against the Cardinals a couple days ago it's obvious they have no confidence in him and no team was even remotely interested in trading for him. It's well past time to cut bait and open up a roster spot for Gordon or Larnach. I'm also most worried about Kirilloff. He's vital for the present and future. Stewart was fun while it lasted but as journeyman relief pitchers go this might have been his shining moment never to be reached again. Still, guys that throw 98 mph and show a wicked sweeper like he had maybe he's got some magic left for a couple more seasons. big dog, TwinsDr2021, Dman and 2 others 5

insagt1 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Gordon is a decent utility player and maybe insurance against more injuries, if he can play. AK started to look pretty bad at the plate prior to his IL stint. He started to k a lot more, which meant perhaps there was something wrong with his mechanics due to some type of injury. Wasn't looking forward to that. Gallo is adding virtually nothing. Decent 'd' but not decent enough to compensate for his terrible hitting. This has been a wasted season for Miranda. Maybe Solano should be playing more now? Noted that Bremer was pretty critical of Correa's weak AB's last night. Wonder if something is up with him too that he's trying to play through? nclahammer 1

Almost every player is playing with some nagging injury by now. Joe Ryan tried to continue despite a groin strain, Kirilloff tried to play with a shoulder injury and I suspect Correa has played all year with back and foot issues. When does an annoyance become an injury? Over and over, we seem to only find out when the player can no longer continue. Anthony Rizzo kept playing for more than two months and is now diagnosed with a concussion. Doctor Wu 1
MABB1959 Verified Member Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 The Twins would be best to spend money on personal trainers to condition these players in the off-season. Make it mandatory and if they don't comply they don't play. wabene and TwinsDr2021 1 1

I wish I were more optimistic, but Gordon returning all-but-guarantees we'll be starting another well below average player nearly every day. Rocco LOVES overplaying guys like Gordon - the supposed utility/spot guys who end up playing 4 games a week seemingly every single year. Best case scenario is we never see Gordon in a Twins jersey again. Frankly I don't think Rocco can help himself. He loves to get cute with rest, match-ups, and never-ending line-up changes. The net result being that the Nick Gordon's of the world somehow make it in to the line-up nearly every day. Rocco will never let a bench/spot guy be a bench/spot guy - his ego won't allow it. No, was responding to your comment about how long they waited. In the past they have waited far longer to put players on the IL. While it could have been sooner, it's not nearly the wait they used to put everyone through. And what is the injury? Haven't heard anything. How serious is it?

Yeah, that was the point of my response, they've slow played injuries, so Kirilloff getting a day off and then being reinserted into the lineup doesn't mean the shoulder injury "isn't anything serious." Idk if the Twins have released any news since he had the MRI.

Gordon hit .176 before his injury and has not played since May 17th, there really should be no expectation from fans or this FO that he will do anything for this team. For him the best thing would be to tweak something while rehabbing and spent the rest of the year on the DL, because if he comes back and doesn't do anything he should be cut ASAP. And I am not sure how many jobs are out there for a 28 year old utility player.

Seriously though, head injuries aren't to be taken lightly as we all well know around here in Twinsville.

His BABIP was .179 to start the year and throughout his career in majors and minors it had been above .300. That .179 had a huge impact on his stats. His strike out rate was good at 11.8%. His expected batting average and slugging were both above league average at .247/.428. He will absolutely find a home. Stretches of 100 or so plate appearances with a very uncharacteristic BABIP happen all of the time. Sometimes we get excited about a great stretch when we shouldn’t. Sometimes we give up on a player when we shouldn’t. It gets magnified when that stretch is to start the year. The player also starts to qorry and maybe starts making adjustments they don’t need to make compounding the struggle.
