Even the Graterol and the comp for Maeda is looking bad. Each of these moves are, individually, defensible. But, man, they aren't great moves.
For me, it's a sign that the Twins FO doesn't evaluate talent correctly and, worse, fails to understand the talent it has.
I would do the Graterol for Maeda trade again even knowing that Maeda would get hurt this year. Graterol has been just meh for the Dodgers and Maeda has been more valuable in 2021 than 2020 & 2021 combined for Graterol, even getting hurt. Graterol has been closer to Hansel Robles than Jorge Alcala. I'd say the Twins understood the talent just fine on that one.
Pressly has been very good for Houston, and I'm sure they're happy to have him. Of course, they had to spend $17.5M to keep him and he might be a FA this year (unclear if his vesting option hits for next season at $10M?). So you have to factor that in too: we dealt 1 year and a bit of Pressly for Celestino and Alcala, who are cheap and under team control. Alcala looks like a real reliever: he's death against righties and appears to be figuring out a way to not get killed by lefties. he was excellent in the second half of the season.
Alcala looks poised to be a significant bullpen piece next year and doesn't hit his first arbitration year until 2023. Celestino should be competing for a spot as the 4th OF next year. When the twins dealt Pressly, they were 7.5 games back and hadn't had a month over .500 all year. (notably, they needed to win 6 straight to finish the season in order to achieve that mark one time during the season, by beating up on a pair of terrible Central division opponents who had given up on the season months earlier) Context matters, and the Pressly deal looks fine.
You all care about this site. The next step is caring for it. We’re asking you to caretake this site so it can remain the premier Twins community on the internet.
Twins fans seriously have to start letting the GM General manage and the manger manage and the players play. Getting really annoyed with twins fans in general these last few weeks.
