Garlick DFA'd

It is about time they moved an outfielder off the 40 man.  I really liked how Garlick hit lefties and have to imagine a team will pick him up.  Maybe the Twins can get something in trade for him yet.

I thought the team should have non-tendered him and essentially this is the result. If someone wants to give the Twins something for him, that is great. If not, thanks for your efforts Kyle.

This makes it more certain that Celestino will be on the Opening Day roster unless they bring in someone new. I hope the Twins can find someone who has a better chance to hit than Celestino and perhaps someone who could serve as a pinch runner and actually take an extra base or swipe a bag. If Martin can hit like he did in the AFL, I think he is a better fit than Celestino.

I would like to see an upgrade from Garlick but I don't think that Celestino is necessarily that upgrade. I know he can play CF (sort of), but I think that Gordon is almost as good so I don't think one keeps Celestino around just for that reason. He could really use a full year's worth of the bats in AAA to improve as a player.

As the eternal optimist, I'm hoping that the signals they have either a trade or potential free-agent deal coming for a right-handed hitting outfielder. Combined with a Kepler trade, hopefully as part of the package to Miami for a pitcher, that would really improve the roster. You essentially have a starting outfield of Buxton, Gallo, and some combination every day of Larnach, Gordon and this new RH hitter. Plenty of at bats to go around there particularly when you realize the DH slot is open for 1 of the outfielders not being used or or whoever of the Miranda/Arraez/Kirilloff group is not playing 1B or 3B that day.

So to me, the real issue is Kepler vs. Larnach on the roster. For a lot of reasons, I think Larnach is the call and Kepler should be traded. That's for another thread.

Well, with the recent signing of veteran Ryan Lamarre, the Twins now have two right-handed outfield bats...in AAA...waiting for a call!

They didn't really bring back Hedley LaMarr...did they?

If I'm remembering correctly, Garlick has an option year left. I'd think that probably makes him a decent bet to be picked up by another team here. Can't say I'm super upset to see him go. No defense, can only hit lefties hitters are not overly valuable players. That's a very specific niche to fit into.

In the words of Hedley Lamarr as he addressed the gang of cut throats, murderers, etc. about to attack Rock Ridge - "Men, you are about to embark on a great crusade to stamp out rampant decency in the west. Now you men will only be risking your lives, Whilst I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. " I say we sign him if only for stirring pre-game speeches.

Because he’s guaranteed major league money, another team is less likely another team would pick him up and stash him in the minors. This is somewhat similar to what we did last year with Jharel Cotton — no team wanted to claim him because they’d have to either keep him in the majors or pay him a major league salary to play in the minors.

I liked Garlick, but couldn't stay healthy.

Couldn't stay healthy seem to be a recurring  theme with this team.

I've said for some time I think the Twins are hoping to keep him around at St Paul, like they did with  Cave last year, in the form of insurance. And I'm hoping that happens.

If Martin hits like he did in AFL, he can play anywhere he wants !   BA - .373  plus over 50 walks;  OPS - .936 ; SB - Over 70;    and less than 50 SO  if he gets 500 AB.

AFL pitching was terrible

Now I expect LaMarre to yell "Now go do that voodoo that you do" before the team runs out onto the field at the start of every game.

Kyle can hit. We all saw it... He can hit.

Unfortunately he was never allowed to hit against right handers.

This has reduced his value to nearly nothing as a short side platoon guy.

This roster can't afford to retain a short side platoon guy.

The OF currently consists of:

One Superstar (Buxton) who struggles to stay healthy.

Two vets (Gallo and Kepler) that we HOPE rebound from two year slumps.

One guy (Gordon) with a one decent year under his belt.

Four young players (Kirilloff, Larnach, Wallner, Celestino) who haven't yet accomplished as much as Nick Gordon has at the MLB Level.

We need Kirilloff, Larnach and Gordon to compete with Gallo and Kepler in case Gallo and Kepler turn into 3 year slumps.

All of the outfield 26 man roster spots need to belong to players who are contenders for playing time to compete against each other to find a player who helps us win.

Garlick will never be allowed to be a contender for playing time because he has been made a specialist and hardened in that role over the course of 4 years.

It isn't his fault that he was turned into a specialist but he has been so therefore... very little value to us and others.

He is the obvious choice.

Have to get a RH veteran bat to add to the bench. Mancini or Cutch would be my targets unless you can add one through trade. How about Miami throws in Avisail Garcia on a trade for Lopez? We give up Arraez and a prospect or two,

If this gives Celestino an opening day 26 man spot.

I'd almost rather keep Garlick and give Correa back to the Mets. I said... Almost ?

Celestino was nowhere near MLB ready last year.

He's 23 years old with options with potential development in front of him.

Rostering him to replace Garlick on the short side of a platoon will kill his career.

Rostering him to be a defensive specialist who doesn't play much will kill his career.

If he has no current value and no future shelf life. He doesn't need to be on the 40 man at all.

Rostering him just to roster him will waste any potential development with that roster spot.

Start him in AAA and give him a chance to get better. Let him show that he is ready, that he deserves a call up when an injury occurs.
