REPORT: Twins Lose JT Chargois On Waivers

Once a fast-rising, hard-throwing reliever in the system, JT Chargois was limited to two outings in 2017 and was later diagnosed with a stress reaction in his elbow.

Chargois, who had his UCL surgically repaired in 2013, has been slow to recover from the latest injury. According to the Pioneer Press's Mike Berardino, the Twins may be attempting to clear him through waivers, removing him from the 40-man roster and reassigning him to Rochester.

Chargois has spent the offseason working out but there has been little update on his throwing program. It's possible that, given his status, he will sneak through and be able to recover and rebuild in the organization.

UPDATE: The Twins lose Chargois on the waviers to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

I figured it was for Sanchez or Odorizzi, but I see they've already been added.

This could be exciting. If it was a free agent move teams typically have time before the announcement and actual signing when they have time to clear a spot. Is a trade more likely?

Seems pretty clear the new FO doesn't think much of hard throwing relievers that can't stay healthy. Bard, Melotakis, Chargois and Burdi all discarded without any return. Can't say that I'm impressed with this path forward but ultimately we will see how the FO replaces their upside in the bullpen. As it's said, the devil is in the details.

Darn. Some of us were hoping he'd take over the closer role by the end of 2017, but instead he's being outrighted during spring of 2017. Hopefully this is a repeat of the Melotakis situation and they'll be able to get him through waivers and retain him because I think he has make it takes to be a reliever in the majors.

Bit perplexed to see Chargois on waivers instead of Slegers...

Mayo says that Chargois has the best fastball and the best slider of the system.

Slegers is replacement level.  I just don't get it.

So we can assume this doesn't involve a free agent, as there's no reason to clear space on the 40-man for a guy you haven't signed yet.

And if you've already signed him, you'd just say so.

Then perhaps a trade?

If he cannot pitch this season, it is best to make this move now as it will be easier to sneak him through waivers.

The other teams would be less likely to make a waiver claim on him before seeing their own players set foot on the practice fields. Later in the spring teams will pick up waivers claims after seeing how their own players perform.

Aren't Zach Jones and Cameron Booser still with us? ;)

Durable SP vs. RP who has never stayed healthy more than a season.

No brainer to me.

I just hope this is not the FO trying to think they are so smart by figuring he will clear waivers. But this is also the same FO that gave Anibal Sanchez a MLB deal when he could have easily been picked up on a minor league deal with Spring Training invite.

It should be Slegers, Sanchez or the Rule 5 pitcher they picked up being dumped before they do any other moves.

Same part though there is nothing stopping a team from claiming him and trying to sneak him through right after that. Toronto was famous for doing that.

If he isn't healthy enough to pitch this season than the correct place for him is the DL. Playing games with service time for an injured player is deplorable.
