Nine of twelve Verified Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 2 hours ago, PDX Twin said: Of course they do. We are desperate for left-handed hitting outfielders. This is not like the three other major North American team sports, in which high draft picks often step right into important roles on the team. As raindog said, our current MLB roster has little to no bearing on draft picks. It's very difficult to project what an 18-year-old will be like as an MLB player because in most cases it takes at least three to five years, sometimes longer, for MLB-level skills to develop, so a team shouldn't draft based on need. Get the players who your scouts feel are the best regardless of position and if that creates a log jam in the future we can trade from a position of oversupply for a position of undersupply. That's more reliable than drafting because we'll have a better idea of a player's potential after being in pro ball for a few years than straight out of high school or even college. And BTW, that's how our FO assembled this year's best-in-baseball pitching staff. How many 18-year-olds have gone straight to the majors after being drafted since the bonus baby rule was abolished in 1965?
tarheeltwinsfan Verified Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Soto has great numbers and he seems to have a very positive attitude. He said he was excited to be able to play with Jenkins, who was his buddy in some prior games. I really like the first two picks of Jenkins and Soto. Let's see who is next. Heiny and TopGunn#22 2
strumdatjag Verified Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Most of the mock drafts had the same top five. There was a clear drop off in the respect given to players ranked lower than those five. Only one of those five was left on the board when the Twins made their pick. TD would be full of outrage if they took anybody else. TopGunn#22, Heiny and Wedman13 2 1

Jocko87 Verified Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 In a land where left handed hitting corner outfielders seem to grow on trees I’m not the biggest fan of spending this much capital on a common good, unless you can get ahold of a superstar. Here’s to hoping he can fulfill the potential. That said, I’d have made the same pick and am very glad nobody got cute. I really like what I’m reading and hearing about him so far, especially universal 80 grade makeup. Seems like the Twins were on him all along, with Cuddyer help. Also, sounds like a very advanced, unTwinslike approach at the plate. Heiny and Dman 2
twinstalker Verified Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Cedar Rapids, what? This is an example of many narratives here I often find hard to digest. Jenkins is going to spend the month and a half in the FCL trying to learn how to hit breaking balls. If he moves over to another field at the end and gets the experience of being on a low A team for a few games, well, that would be exactly what it is...an experience. To think he's going to conquer low A after spending half a second in the complex league is completely unrealistic. TopGunn#22 1

Twins need hitting desperately, and there's no reason right now to think they'll have that problem solved within three years. Cleveland hasn't figured it out for longer than that.

UK Twin Verified Member Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 I'm glad they didn't try to be clever and just selected the one "top 5" prospect that remained. Every expert said there was a clear gap between the top 5 and the rest so I was relieved to see the Twins drafted Jenkins. Heiny 1

Hopefully he gets signed quickly, passes all the medicals and can jump into some rookie ball games in the complex league immediately and the teams can really get to work with him. Assuming reasonable health and so forth, I think it's likely he starts next season in Ft. Myers at Low-A and from there his advancement will be driven by his performance and development.
RpR Verified Member Posted July 11, 2023 Posted July 11, 2023 It would be sweet if he were the Twins version of De La Cruz; in the Big Show before he is 22.
tony&rodney Old-Timey Member Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 Jenkins was one of the top five, all judged to be the best prospects since Gerrit Cole and Harper. No draft pick in baseball is a guarantee, but this is the Twins best shot at a superstar since Buxton was drafted in 2012. Walker Jenkins is the most significant pick this front office has made. I'm satisfied that the Twins went with the scouting reports and did not get cute. We will need to wait for the results.

The Twins likely wanted to pay Walker as little as possible to try to sign the remaining HS kids and Walker's camp likely wanted Walker to get paid as closely to the other four elite top picks as possible. Which, obviously is Boras' job and the right thing to do. Mike Sixel 1
