The idea of trading young pitchers for young bats on the serface sounds great but we do need to understand that the teams that win have "good" pitching. While we really don't have an ace we do have a very solid top 3 and if we have 3 to fill the next 2 spots... That is REALLY ideal. Can't see it but if Westburg could be had ... Would have to consider and likley do but all the others... Nah. Not worth the risk as we are actaully very solid with our regulars at this point..

Ummm... What you smokin' Willis? A high end pitcher for a guy that you could likely get on the free agent market for a reasonable price. Or Kirksey who is ... pretty much the same guy! yikes.

Carlos Correa Trade Buzz Is Heating Up
specialiststeve replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Amazingly a good portion of the Twins fan base undervalues Correa. He is a gold glove player at a prime position that is a middle of the lineup bat. That being said, I would say that every player on the roster should be available for trade... always!! If the return improves the team and makes financial sense it would be stupid for the front office to not entertain offers. Not trying to make your players unhappy but to understand the goal is to be good longterm and short term. The article is a bit hollow without having any actual names that could be returned... -
I do believe that your assessment of our catcher situation is not correct! Having both catchers catch and stay healthy has been a very good thing. Take it you have never caught a game in your life... is VERY taxing as someone who has. Keeping them fresh and healthy is extremely important. As far as underperforming and expensive? I don't see that either are really accurate either. As stated by others this position is more about handling the pitching staff and being a quality leader.. the offensive side is a bonus and believe both have been good in the most important areas. Finding a quality replacement for either is going to cost more than the current total.. It's not broken... don't try to fix it!!

Vocal minority? Most all of the Twins fans that I know are scratching their heads with this one. He is calm and steady I will give him that. He is also Terrible with the pitching staff ... his dependence on the "metrics" and not having a feel for the game is so bad I have to turn off games knowing he is so incompetent. He also basically puts a lineup in and sits on his hands for the rest of the game on offense.. again not having a feel for the game or not being "aggressive" with the run game or bunting with guys that have shown the ability in crucial situations... again NOT acceptable. 2 complete collapses in 3 years .... not learning and not getting better. Accountability he asks for from his players but doesn't have the insight to look in the mirror. I would say that his lack of managing skills cost this team at least 10 games that I can think of... argh! Not good. Terrible decision to bring him back..

Absolutly. Think that was the long term plan all along with Lee. Hopefully Correa is back soon. -
The Ongoing Education of Edouard Julien
specialiststeve replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
A bit stunned they sent down Martin instead of Julian. Julian has cost this team several games with his Jr. high defense. Martin is very solid and useful at several positions. His at bats are much better than Julian 90% of the time. Not understanding the FO on this one. -
Umm.. because he is a rookie. Folks that have played understand that every "jump" is an adjustment. Jr. high to HS.. HS to college or pros if you are that gifted. Then every level has an increase in talent... thus "most" struggle a bit as they adjust. The biggest jump of all is from AAA to the show as .... the best pitchers of the AAA teams are most likely # 5 starter (at best!) in talent at that point. So facing pitchers at the highest level is just plain hard and make even the best prospect have a "learning curve". You can see he has game ... he will be fine. Be patient.
-
Would disagree... Senators had very little talent. Rocco's teams have had plenty of that!! His "sitting on his hands" and not doing anything to generate runs for those of us that have coached the sport is just plain bad managing. Pair that with his incompetence of how to run a bullpen... He is up there as one of the worst. Having talent and not using it competently would be more of a measuring stick than just plain wins and losses.

Twins need to demote Julian and move on from him in the offseason. He just doesn't have major league defensive skills.. period. We have way too many options there to continue with the "experiment" while on the job.

It was time several months ago... was one of the poor decisions we have made this year regarding roster management. How many games would he have helped us win being the bridge guy? 3-5 at least I would think..

Nice article ... not Linear!! There is so much that goes into a player getting to the major league and staying there. Talent is number one but also the ability adjust ... the ability to "grind" and stay healthy. Even the best players struggle some and sometimes a lot but the ability to adjust and move on is what the "best" do.

Had said at the time that the "lift" and arc was a flawed approach as the bat and the contact point are such a small percentage... thus the bottoming out of the batting average... Getting back to fundamental "old school" baseball that the Twins have used this year is what baseball is supposed to look like. What is Truly amazing is how they have flipped the switch to the old school approach. Says how amazing these players really are considering the pace of the pitches these days. That is another discussion though...

What went wrong for David Festa?
specialiststeve commented on Eric Blonigen's blog entry in Eric’s deep dive corner
Ummm.. it was his first start in the Majors... Take a deep breath and relax. He is good. AAA is players trying to get to the show and AAAA players ... pitching at the show is an adjustment and he should be fine given time and the opportunity which he will get eventually. Be patient... know that is tough in our have it all right now society but ... be patient!! -
Negative Nelly... what's the point? We all know that EVERY team has stinkers... part of the deal. No story here unless you are negative type person and wants to be critical.

Who Says No To The Athletic's Proposed Twins Trade For Alonso - I DO!
specialiststeve commented on LA Vikes Fan's blog entry in LA Vikes Fan
I would be fine with Kiriloff and some lower level "guys" .. but guys right on the cusp... Kiriloff, Prielipp and Schobel or maybe Severino... more the pace I would think... -
Video: Twins Top Prospects: CJ Culpepper
specialiststeve replied to Aram Leighton's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins need to get him to the bullpen. His "Funky arm slot" is called short arming. As a former coach this is very effective for some guys but not in huge doses. He will be having arm surgery in the near future if they keep him where he is at. He would be a great reliever and would last longer if put there. -
Trade Deadline: Scenarios for Your Minnesota Twins
specialiststeve commented on wyatt's blog entry in GM: What? Like It's Hard?
Well... my take on the proposals... Luzardo would be great but... double checked and he is not a FA until 27'.. If the Fish would be willing it would be a steal!! Montes... Meh... bring up a prospect... get the same results... Pressley would be nice to have ... not sure the Stohs' are going to let him go for basically nothing... if so Great! Paralta.... not sure we need him with our lefties already doing well for the most part. Canha... not sure we have the need... Rengifo... has had a nice year but for that price ... hard pass. As far as "NEED" a second baseman Willi will be just fine over there and Lee is on his way... We are GOOD. Alonzo... He would be nice but again at that price for a couple months rental? Hard pass. -
Should they look at Cole Sands in the rotation?
specialiststeve replied to jorgenswest's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Allowed only two runs in 12 innings as a reliever (a 1.50 ERA) with 17 strikeouts and two walks.... Not sure what your definition of dominant is but that would be in my dictionary...- 44 replies

The Twins' Catching Rotation is Costing Them
specialiststeve replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
That is the WHOLE reason why he has done this and although I am not a Baldelli fan this is extremely smart. Just look at the postseason and Jeffers production playing every day... Zip.. Was a mistake then by not alternating and keeping them fresh and would be a great mistake playing Jeffers every day. What they are doing now is dead on what they should be doing. Spend a bit of time behind the dish in my younger years... Wearing is an understatement for the toll it takes on a body! -
Should they look at Cole Sands in the rotation?
specialiststeve replied to jorgenswest's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
As the saying goes... "leave well enough alone!" As I stated in Spring training Varland should have stayed in the bullpen. He had found a niche and was dominant. Sands also has found that spot and should stay where he is at. Keep a strength a strength. We have some starter options that we need to see if can pitch at this level.- 44 replies
