It's time to move on to another analyst. Who do you want to hear more of next season?

Morneau is at the head of the class among the people parading at the analyst spot last season.Just wish that there was an audition for play by play and easing Dick out as well. Just tired of the same and same trite and nothing to do with the game remarks, esp. when the game is not close....

Dick will be 63 in March, so he may have a year or 2 left before he retires.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 And it takes a couple of seasons for a former player to get comfortable behind the mike. Lauder has improved so much. Smalley has kinda tapped to his potential. Be interesting to see if they go with Morris (how much does he want to work) and Morneau. Remember, youa re on the road, just like a player, and have to do prep time for each game.
Nine of twelve Verified Member Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 The play-by-play announcer on TV is almost superfluous. Sometimes I think that he/she is there mainly to get people who aren't paying attention to look at the screen when something important happens. It might be interesting to give Dick the night off and have Smalley, Hawkins, and Morneau do the equivalent of a TD game thread and just talk about whatever they happen to think of. Non-traditional but I bet it would make for interesting listening.
Brock Beauchamp Site Manager Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Who do you want to hear more of next season?Hawkins and Morneau.
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Author Posted October 30, 2018 Hawkins and Morneau.I don't think I watched enough games to know what their strengths are. They're both fairly young who could be in the role for 20 years if they want. I also wouldn't be opposed to hiring someone outside the Twins' circle of trust for a fresh perspective.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I really like Morneau and Thome a lot! And I think they will only get better as they get more comfortable. Dick and Bert are both getting to the point where they will probably be thinking more and more about easing back or even retiring, opening up more time for those mentioned. I know my opinion isn't a popular one, but I really enjoy both Dick and Bert, even with the cheese factor involved. I spent a good deal of my life following the Twins on the radio, not TV. And Herb was always there as one of the very best I ever heard. And while Gordon wasn't there as long, and Herb had other partners, Herb and Gordo both made me feel "home" when I tuned in. Dick and Bert make me feel that way on the TV side. Side note, I also enjoy Smalley and think he offers a lot of good things. He just needs to talk a little less and get to the point a little more quickly! I also enjoy Jack a lot and love his non-sugar coated commentary. Hawkins is OK, but I think he needs to open up a bit more and not be so monotone, but please, more Thome and Morneau!

But for the actual play by play, they are going to have to eventually, don't you think? Some of these options, new to announcing as they may be, are already head and shoulders above other color guys I hear. But I don't know that there is a play by play guy in the bunch.
Winston Smith Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I bet Riverbrian would do a great job!
mngopherguy Provisional Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Please no more Morris, all he wants to do is talk about himself. I'm tired of Smalley too. Maybe keep it fresh and rotate guys in.

Old Twins Cap Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Thing to do is to watch other clubs' announcers, and listen to what they talk about. For me, best broadcast is Michael Kay with Paul O'Neil and David Cone. They take you inside the game, inside the head, tell stories, laugh about it, bring in national media perspectives, historical perspectives -- very fun and informative to listen to. Mets' announcers are good too, especially Darling. The thing is, these guys have passion and care about the moment at hand, the point in the season -- really bring baseball all together. And, it's important for the play-by-play guy to have a good call of action as it happens, voice, tempo, emotion, -- he or she is interpreting what is happening as it happens. Michael Kay is an institution at that.
Blake Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Salary and benefits? Salary? No. But you get the benefit of constant criticism of your on air ability.
Blake Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Hawkins and Morneau.I don't see why the Twins need to settle on one color guy. Why not rotate Smalley, Morneau and Hawkins?
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 When do we start phasing out Bremer? I kinda care more about that than Blyleven.
operation mindcrime Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I think Marney should replace Dick. Pizza Ranch for the win!
nclahammer Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I like Bert and Dick working together, but it's also a nice variety to rotate in some other commentators.
Platoon Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 It's not an easy job. They all work for the "company", so there take is somewhat colored by their desire for continued compensation. I can live with Bert, Morris not so. But no matter who comes in as a replacement, the surest bet is that he, or she, will wear thin not long thereafter. You can only describe certain happenings, and regale with past experience the masses so often, before they come calling for your early retirement.
rv78 Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I like Dick and Bert. Morneau is good. Haven't heard enough of Thome. Hawkins is ok. Hunter not so much. I don't think Morris is interested in doing more than a few games and at his age, why? Please, no more Smalley. Really don't need someone to analyze every play in super detail like he does. If there is anyone that OVER-analyzes it is him. I usually hit the mute button when he is on.
USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 . Who do you want to hear more of next season?Joe Buck and John Smoltz.

nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I think Marney should replace Dick. Pizza Ranch for the win! I've long voted for Marney to get an audition. If Pizza Ranch has to come with though, I may change my mind.
Number3 Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Needless to say I haven't heard much of the Twins' announcers in my market but, in general, I hope its not a ex pitcher who over analyzes the options for each and every pitch and will not shut up between each and every pitch. John Smoltz is the worst. I love listening to the old broadcasts with Curt Gowdy and others who did not consider silence to be a mortal sin. I also hate the obsession with close ups of the players. Would much rather see the players positions on the field between pitches instead of the hairs in the pitcher's nose.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 Joe Buck and John Smoltz. Shhhh, people are supposed to forget that those guys are the punishment you get for wishing for the World Series upon the monkey's paw.
luckylager Verified Member Posted October 30, 2018 Posted October 30, 2018 I enjoy the rotation, but would really like to see more Morneau. Less Morris.
