Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Getting Archer would be better than signing Darvish! I’m not sure it would be better, but it’s certainly a good 2nd move, depending on the cost.
AZTwin Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I would do:Max KeplerFernando RomeroNick GordonFelix JorgeThat would be more than fair.
jimmer Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I’m not sure it would be better, but it’s certainly a good 2nd move, depending on the cost.Let me rephrase. We'd be getting a better pitcher. But yeah, what it would cost in prospects probably doesn't make it the better than just spending the money.

But yeah, what it would cost in prospects probably doesn't make it the better than just spending the money.Yeah, I knew what you meant, and I’m not convinced he’s a better pitcher, at least for right now, but it’s definitely a good 2nd move, imho.

I definitely believe Archer is the better pitcher. For me, there's no doubt. And he is younger too.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I definitely believe Archer is the better pitcher. For me, there's no doubt. And he's younger too.Younger and team control are good. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s an excellent piece to add to our young core and hope a deal can be worked out. But it will cost us and until I see what ... but this is what we have to do to get front-end pitching.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 But ... while I hope for it, I will still manage my expectations by remaining cynical. Brian, where’s your pitchfork now?

THAT starts to make this rotation look promising.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I hope they sign Gomez if they deal Kepler. That takes the sting off,I think.

I’m not sure what I think of that ... I hate the idea of losing Kepler, but if it doesn’t hurt a little, something is wrong with the trade.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Not going to happen. In my opinion this is just P.R. fluff to deflect from the Darvish fiasco. But if they can pull it off at this late date without dealing Kepler or Lewis, by all means.

I expect us to get Garcia and Tillman and we'll get sold on how much their veteran presence and leadership will help a young team.
Halsey Hall Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I'd rather not if it costs Kepler.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 You have to trade value to get value.
Nine of twelve Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Getting Archer would be better than signing Darvish!I'd rather have Archer than Darvish, but I'd rather have paid money than players to make the acquisition.
jimmer Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I'd rather not if it costs Kepler. you'd balk at getting a bonafide ace if it meant losing Kepler? I'm a Kepler fan, but that's an easy yes.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 This. I expect us to get Garcia and Tillman and we'll get sold on how much their veteran presence and leadership will help a young team.Even though that means there aren't any young players on the roster.... How long do these guys need to be MLB players not to be young?
jimmer Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 I'd rather have Archer than Darvish, but I'd rather have paid money than players to make the acquisition.yeah, that's why I rephrased a couple posts after I wrote that.
Hosken Bombo Disco Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 That’s terribly cynical of you! It was Max Kepler's birthday recently. The reason I know this is because the Twins promoted it on Facebook. At this point let's keep him a while
old nurse Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 You have to trade value to get value. The return teams got for Miggy, Anibal Sanchez, Price, Cueto? The Royals got a great return for Greinke. Archer does not have near the track record at this point.

notoriousgod71 Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 If the Twins don't get Archer or overpay for him are we allowed to get the pitch forks out?
jimmer Verified Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Archer has pitched over 200 innings in the last three years and just under 200 IP 4 seasons ago. 2013 fWAR: 3.22014 fWAR: 5.22016 fWAR: 3.22017 fWAR: 4.6 And he's done that facing the toughest offenses in baseball consistently. We have anybody close to that?
gunnarthor Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2018 Posted February 12, 2018 Kepler is cheaper, younger and has more years of control. Archer strikes guys out and is durable but that's about it. By bWAR, Kepler is better. fWAR, which relies on fip, likes Archer a lot more. Archer has been pitching in a very good pitchers park in front of a very good defense. I think bWAR is probably a bit closer to the truth but our FO better have a pretty good understanding of them.
