Nick Nelson Site Manager Posted 8 hours ago Posted 8 hours ago Image courtesy of David Frerker-Imagn Images Back in spring training, Byron Buxton was asked by KSTP report Alec Ausmus if he envisioned himself moving anywhere other than center field. "No, not really," Buxton replied. "I mean, if someone else come here and is faster than me, then I will move over, but until then, I ain't going nowhere. Like … that is home for me." Well, no one faster has come along as of yet. In fact, Walker Jenkins, who has taken over center field for the final stretch for the Twins, is a below-average runner according to Statcast, and a far cry from Buxton's blazing 97th percentile sprint speed. But as the team looks ahead to 2027, the planning and decision criteria at center field might need to be a little more involved than "who can run the fastest." Buxton's desire to remain in center field is perfectly understandable. He's been an All-Star at the position in back-to-back years. When on the field, he still impacts games positively on defense. And the last time he tried moving away from center, during the 2023 season when physical limitations ruled out a defensive role, was the low point of his career. It's well established that some players aren't that well suited for designated hitter. They hit better when engaged on the defensive side rather than sitting on the bench for long spells between every at-bat. There's a fair chance Buxton is one of those players, even if he hasn't said so outright. That 2023 campaign was a trying one offensively, with Buxton batting .207 with a .311 wOBA. Of course, you wonder how much the health situation hindered his production. Heading into 2027, the Twins have a new set of outfielders set to take the reins, and we saw all in the lineup together for the first time on Sunday: Emmanuel Rodriguez in left, Jenkins in center, Luke Keaschall in right. The presence of this players on next year's team feels non-negotiable. Rodriguez has to be on the active roster coming out of spring training due to being out of options. Jenkins could theoretically start back in the minors, but I wouldn't expect it unless he really struggles in camp. And while Keaschall is not necessarily locked into an outfield role, the Twins have shown no appetite for using him in the infield since June. There are ways you could shift things around to facilitate a return to center field for Buxton. Rodriguez could open the season in a backup role. Jenkins could open the season in Triple-A. Keaschall could relocate to second base again, or spend most of his time as DH. But all of these moves would feel like kicking the can down the road, in ways that aren't even necessarily beneficial short-term, for the sake of bowing to the will of a 33-year-old player nearing the end of his contract. Don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with the Twins giving Buxton a large say in his handling. He's earned that. But at the end of the day, Minnesota's decision-makers have to do what's best for the team, and it's future. Importantly, moving Buxton off center field also might be what's best for him. Increasingly, the hip injury that plagued him throughout this 2026 season and ultimately cut it short was flaring up while he played the outfield. On August 21st, he made a sensational diving catch in San Diego but was in clear discomfort afterward, hunching on the field for several moments before gingerly trotting off. Buxton remained in the game against San Diego, but four days later in Sacramento, he was unable to bend over and pick up a rolling ball in the gap. He lumbered off the field in pain, and that proved to be the end of his season. We're all hoping that Buxton's upcoming surgery, scheduled for later this week, does much to resolve the hip issues that have repeatedly bothered him over the years. But either way, drop-offs in the second half have become the norm for him over many years. If the Twins have true aspirations of stepping forward into legitimate contention next year, keeping Buck going in August and September will be imperative. As it happens, the DH spot is one of the few on next year's team that is completely open. Josh Bell, who has started 117 of 149 games there for the Twins this year, is headed for free agency and unlikely to return. Buxton, who made the second-most DH starts this year with 20, is a natural successor — especially because his pre-injury offensive production would look great there. That sets up some sensitive but necessary conversations between Buxton and the Twins this offseason. He has earned a meaningful voice in how the final years of his career take shape, but the organization also owes it to him (and itself) to seriously consider whether leaving center field behind gives him the best chance to stay healthy, productive and on the field when the games matter most. Whitey333 Verified Member Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago Finally a good logical and common sense story about Buxton and his status on the Twins. He should not be considered a fixture in generally field anymore. He should not just be given that position and possibly be blocking younger players from playing. Now we could move him to DH and put up with more games missed just in a different spot. It is so past the time to move on from Buxton. Hunter4848, Coach Wheels, chpettit19 and 10 others 4 9
bean5302 Verified Member Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago DH's still need to run the bases. Moving Buxton to DH won't meaningfully help his health. I've seen no evidence suggesting moving to a new position on the baseball field (including DH) makes chronic issues disappear. Jenkins is just as injury prone as Buxton so far, but Jenkins probably isn't going to be a good center fielder, though he may be adequate. Have to wait for a little more sample size, but right now, his initial sprint speed is poor. League average runners don't belong in CF. glunn, DJL44, Linus and 6 others 9

I think if Buxton is healthy enough to bat he is also healthy enough to play in the outfield, whether that is in center field or in one of the corners. I just think giving him DH only duties diminishes his value to the team. hlsballer318, Richie the Rally Goat, Patzky and 8 others 11
Jeff K Verified Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago It was my understanding that the primary basis of his latest injury was from swinging the bat and it was an issue years in developing. I think Byron should be option 2 or 3 in CF and option 1 in RF. He should also DH plenty next year. I don't think he is in the way of any of Keaschall, Emma or Jenkins as there are plenty of AB's for 4 outfielders even when all are healthy. I will say that first base is unresolved and that could be a future home for Keaschall. rdehring and Hunter4848 2

Stew Verified Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago The only point to be added is that you have double the stress on the body by playing the outfield and running bases.. Remember that most of his injuries have come in the outfield. He only knows one way of playing. And that's fast and hard. I don't think it would help a lot to move him to a corner position.. It would only take our best fielder and put him in less of a helpful roll to the team. Anyway you look at it he will get more dh time. HarmonK03, Hunter4848 and bean5302 1 2
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago I was sleeping in med school so I'm not qualified to diagnose his health issue or issues. The answer to the question posed is... a firm no. If an injury compromises his ability to field the baseball. It will probably compromise his ability to hit the baseball. If he has a particular ailment where his hitting is not compromised but his defense is. Well, yeah then of course and only for the length of time that the injury persists. Any attempt to mitigate future injuries through lighter utilization is simply compromising your baseball team to accommodate. If an injury occurs that is compromising his ability to play the game of baseball... he should go on the IL and heal. In the meantime... the Twins organization should staff it's 26 man roster like there is a possibility that Byron will get hurt. In addition... they should staff it's 26 man roster like there is a possibility that any player on the 26 man roster could get hurt. Linus, Richie the Rally Goat, rdehring and 4 others 5 2
wesnewy Verified Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago at least to me it has always looked like Buck is better at the plate when in CF vs DH. He should stay out there until there is an obvious defensive replacement out there, or his body breaks down to the point that he can't. rdehring 1

I think you're significantly overstating the number of injuries which stem from playing outfield. Other than an occasional eary career full speed run into walls or MiLB injury diving for a ball (finger/wrist) I don't recall outfield caused injuries. He's missed time being HBP or "running" which happens on the base paths too. Senior Softball Guy, Bangkok Twins Fan, chpettit19 and 1 other 4

rdehring Verified Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Keaschall, Jenkins, Buxton and Rodriguez. Left field, center field, right field, DH. That's four players and four positions. Sounds like an easy decision to me. Three play in the outfield and one at DH. When all are healthy, rotate so each player is at DH once or twice a week, about three times every two weeks. When one is beat up but not on the IL, he gets more time at DH and less time in the field. When one is on the IL, problem solved. Works for me, at least until two go on the IL at the same time. thelanges5, Dave Lemke, mikelink45 and 5 others 7 1
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago I appreciate the purpose behind the question and I think the Twins should be discussing this behind closed doors both as an organization and in cooperation with Buck. The Twins don't have another good CF option on the roster. If they can change that somehow by going out and finding an option that makes sense for the team and the organization than the conversation changes. Until such time as another option exists....Buxton is the CFer for this team. It's one of the few places they have a legitimately good defender penciled in. Might be worth looking at someone like Victor Scott as a AAA guy to have around so at least you have a legit defensive guy in the fold somewhere. (Work on his hitting obviously) HarmonK03 1
mikelink45 Old-Timey Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Let it play out. If he is in CF and only lasts half the season we are in the same position as we have beeen in past years. Use him where he is best. At least we have some adequate replacements now. I just don't see him as DH. For twelve years his average games played is 82 - half a season. As he gets older it might be less, but maximize his abilities for the games he does play.
Rod Carews Birthday Verified Member Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Maybe. . . but I don’t really think that’s the best plan for the Twins or for Buxton. Early in his career, he played the outfield like a man possessed. However, in the past few years he’s become much more cognizant of his body and the damage that he can do to it by running into walls, etc. At the moment, he’s undoubtedly our best CF, as well as one of the best in the league. Whether that continues following hip surgery is far from certain, and that should be the deciding factor. The thought of being “proactive” about his health by having him play CF is I think a little overstated. He still needs to run and slide and hit and twist as a DH, albeit less than in CF. The other factor is that he has generally not done particularly well as a full time DH. Why? Is it because he was (partially) injured? Maybe. Is it because he’s just not wired to sit on the bench and bat four times or so per game with no other real involvement? I think more likely, and I get that completely. It’s not a personal failure, it’s how he’s wired. All of this being said, I do think that Jenkins/Rodriguez are probably both solid CFers in the short term. They don’t have Buxton’s speed, but seem to be solid fielders — perhaps not to the Puckett, Hunter, Buxton level, but acceptable at least. You don’t always get to have a gold glover in CF. We probably need to get used to that. Senior Softball Guy 1

David Maro Verified Member Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago How about the fact he is not 20 something anymore and his body takes longer to recover. It's really becoming the beating of a dead horse. If he's only been able to play 50%+ of the season why does everyone think that will increase. I said the other day sit down with him and his agent and tell him we are going younger in the OF and want you to be the DH. That may make him ask for a trade because he doesn't want to DH or maybe he has changed his mind about that. Hunter4848 1

Brandon Verified Member Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago I think with 4 OF who can start next year we should rotate several players in and out of DH throughout the season. I think Buxton should DH a little more but not much. He hits better when he is out on the field. 40-50 games at DH max and 80-100 games in either CF or RF. He should get time in bot CF and RF.

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted 4 hours ago Posted 4 hours ago They need to do what is best for the team. Nothing more or less. But he's not earned the right to make that decision. It's not a players job to do so, and the vast majority would never take themselves out or move to a new position on their own. The FO and manager need to run the team, and the players play. As for DH or not? I mean, they have four starters, rotate thru DH. But if he's healthy next year, I'd trust him to field more than Keaschell.... Rod Carews Birthday and Danchat 2
