Rumor: Carlos Rodon Signs with the New York Yankees

Heyman jumped out a few minutes ago with a brief tweet that, if correct, means one of only two star (or close to star) free agents remaining has gone off the table. Left-hander Carlos Rodon, by all accounts pursued by the Minnesota Twins, will be donning pinstripes in the Bronx in 2023 and beyond.

Any guesses on dollars and years?

That's really not an unreasonable amount for Rodon. That's the kind of deal the Twins could have easily signed.

I doubt the Twins offered that. But with him wanting to go to NY, I doubt he’d have come here unless their deal was bigger in years and noticeably different in AAV.

I won’t be surprised if we hear another team, (not the Twins) had a bigger deal in the table.

That wouldn't surprise me, either. And I was never that particularly high on Rodon so I'm not gnashing my teeth over it. I was open to the Twins signing him but given his injury, he scares the hell out of me.

Since there have been reports that Rodón preferred to go to the Yankees, another team may have had to beat this deal at least by a bit — I'm not sure I would have wanted the Twins to go higher on both dollars and years, but $1M more per year, or a 7th year on its own? Sure, that seems reasonable, especially considering what they were willing to offer Correa.

Shocker. Truly shocking the Twins aren't signing one elite FA. Onto the next level (most of whom are gone), then to level three FAs....yay!

You can have CC for ten years (5-7 good ones and 3-5 ok ones and nothing in years 11-13) and no good FA in year 11=13....or you can have three ok to bad FAs. Which would you rather have? Because 35MM a year is three ok to bad FAs right now, and likely one good to great FA in 11 years.....I know what I'd rather have. Because ok FAs aren't much better than the guys in the minors....

Who cares. The alternative is watching the Pohlad family count their money. I want Rodon and the risk more than I want a $120 million payroll.

As I said the other day. It doesn't matter what the Twins may have offered. The Yankees just up it. Rodon wanted to be with Yankees. Same with Dansby Swanson. If the Cubs want him, they just up whatever  Mn may have offered. That's just the way it is. Twins FO need to stop saying every winter we are all In on big name free agents. They are better off saying we are going to do the best we can. Saying your all in and then getting nothing makes you look bad. Please don't trade Arraez + whoever for Lopez.

Time to burn it all to the ground. Can’t force Pohlads to sell but can bring in a FO with a pulse and a plan. 
 

The most embarrassing offseason in years. Only way to improve team now is decimate the 23rd ranked farm system.

What do you mean not the Twins.  I thought we were signing him and Swanson?  How could our front office not deliver?

I wouldn't take that bet, would you? I would also say he has the same odds as any other pitcher. Would you bet on any pitcher staying healthy?

Ok but they could have improved the team by focusing on guys like Bassitt, Abreu, Contreras, Senga, Bell etc but instead they tried to live in their little fairyland that they could get these stars and they didn’t stand a chance. Now the offseason is shot

Agreed....but they didn't. They passed on nearly every guy in the second tier of FA.

And this is a startling trend during the Falvey era. For a team dead set on being right in the middle of payroll, those are the players that you should be aiming for

Rodon wasn't the target I wanted; the injury history scares me more with him than basically any other player, especially after seeing the Twins squad get wrecked by injuries 2 years in a row. But since he cost only money, I think I would have gone for it with Correa off the board...but if he had his mind set on going to NY, then what are ya gonna do?

I wonder where the Twins were sitting on this from a numbers perspective? Not that it really matters, but I'm always a little curious to see how high they might have been willing to go. Maybe we're better off not knowing, since it will likely only infuriate the people that hate everything about this front office even more...

Never thought for a single second that the Twins were “seriously in” on Rodon. This offseason so far is a dud. The only way to dig out of this hole, if they actually want to win, is make 2 to 3 trades for MLB talent. Further depleting the farm system.

My two cents....Carlos Rodon was never coming to Minnesota.  And the Twins were never going to give any pitcher 6 years.  Period.
