The Twins made a series of moves this afternoon.

Marwin Gonzalez to the IL (hamstring)

Willians Astudillo called up.

Sean Poppen called up (added to 40).

Adalberto Mejia to the 60 Day IL.

Blake Parker to the Family Emergency List.

That must be the worst calf strain in the history of calf strains for Mejia

Resisting temptation to crack wise about Mejia’s size relative to a typical calf (you know, like a baby cow).

Dang Gonzalez is such a important piece in our lineup and flexibility, hopefully Astudillio can stay hot... Another reliever Popper pass over Reed. I am starting to feel like this front office doesn't think much of Jake Reed, much like all the other "high talent arms" they gave away. I mean Poppen has been good from stat lines, but I just feel Reed needs a chance.

Probably has something to do with who pitched when, plus Poppen has been starting and could add more length. Poppen has been more than good at Rochester this year.

Actually Poppen is not a reliever, he's a starter. I'm assuming they chose him because he can give them multiple innings if Gibby has a short start.

Don't do it. Husky ballplayers with marginal talent are folk heroes in these parts.

I'm happy that neither Littell nor Duffey were sent down. After their performances last night (and this morning), it would've been a hit to morale to put either on the plane to Rochester. Both proved they deserved to stay with the Twins.

Adalberto Mejia to the 60 Day IL.

Help me out, Seth. Mejia went on the IL on May 2, but just pitched in the minors yesterday.

Pitching yesterday has no effect on how they count the days for the 60 Day IL? So his 60 Day IL stint can end roughly July 1?

Does moving him to the 60 Day IL effectively clear a 40 man spot until about July 1, while otherwise not having any impact on Mejia or the roster?

Then, come July 1, a 40 man roster spot will have to be cleared, assuming Mejia is healthy?

Mejia is already pitching in rehab, so this is just a procedural move. We'll have to drop someone from the 40-man once his rehab is done.

Yes, the 60 day DL stint is retroactive to when he last pitched in MLB.

And yes, this is just a procedural move that means he's out until at least July 1st, and we'll have to clear a spot when his rehab ends after that.

Most likely Poppen.

I canceled my movie ticket tonight so I could watch the game. I REALLY hope it's not a Tortuga night.

After watching all 17 innings last night, I sure would hate to see a Twins hitter that enjoys putting the ball in play.

I hadn't heard of the Family Emergency List before so I looked it up. Similar to the Bereavement List--3 to 7 days. I would think Poppen goes back down when Parker returns. I hope for many reasons that he's back after 3.

Ah yes, good old weak contact that doesn't accomplish anything. So much awesome.

Agreed. I'm about over watching him pitch, but not this way.

My concern is that getting Cave, Arraez and Astudillo up here over the last couple days, my hope of Rochester getting back to .500 and into the playoff hunt will take a major hit.  [yes, I am saying that tongue in check]

Did I read somewhere that Poppen had a 3.59 FIP?  My question that maybe Seth knows or can find out, was his GPA at Harvard higher than his FIP?

What a great reward for a young man who has been having a tremendous year.  Saw he was scheduled to start tonight in Rochester.  Expect he is insurance if a long man is needed and will go back in a couple days.

Position player depth really paying off.

What can we expect from Poppen?

I try never to expect anything from anyone in their debut (or in Berrios' situation, debut season)... But... here's some:

RHP. 6-4. Fastball 92-96... Good slider. Changeup getting better, though definitely his third pitch. He has usually had really good control, doesn't walk many. And has really picked up ability to miss bats.

And yet, you still did ...

I want to say his GPA was higher... and his majors were Chemistry, Physics and Engineering Sciences... or something like that.

Congrats to Poppen. Hope things are working out for Parker. Serious family stuff ranks way higher than a pennant race. Best wishes.
