Tortuga is back... Poppen Called Up!

Most likely Poppen.

25 man spot? Poppen will be back down before July 1st, likely when Parker is back.

40 man spot? I am sure they didn't add Poppen now to DFA him in 2 weeks. There are still a few other candidates -- Moya, Vasquez. Actually Gonsalves could get "promoted" to the 60 day DL too. Or a trade could move someone off.

Don't do it. Husky ballplayers with marginal talent are folk heroes in these parts.

Well I mean, husky players have a pretty strong track record with this team.

Most likely Poppen.

He'd be exposed, right? In that case, I wouldn't think Poppen would be the most likely to fall off the 40-man at that time. Or maybe I'm just wishing. To me, there are a number of guys I'd rather expose on the 40-man...than someone like Poppen, who both seems to have some projection remaining with the good frame and having just turned 25...and also seems to have a shot at helping in 2019.

(edit: hadn't yet noticed Spy's post above)

While I have to admit part of me always admired and respected the iron man, consecutive game mentality, its cool to see a guy like Marwin take a breather.

In my imagination, it was something like, "Hey, we know you're a little beat up, but could probably play if you had to, but what do you think about taking a week off.  Our guy Tortuga is raking in Rochester--you'd be missed, but we might be better off long term getting you healthy now and see if we can catch this hot streak from Astudillo."

As far as Poppen goes, man, they aren't messing around.  I forgot Moya and Vasquez were on the 40 man; they'd best get it going before July 2.  Poppen's another marginal 5th starter type (like Littell) who might be able to carve out a career as a reliever.

I gotta believe the Twins will have trades in the works and there are some fringe 40 man candidates that might get traded.  I am looking Jake Cave, Ronald Torreyes or Lamonte Wade could be traded to free up a spot.  Also there could be a player with another serious injury to go on the IL by July 1st.  Poppen is on the 40 for good now so I hope this works out well.

Help me out, Seth. Mejia went on the IL on May 2, but just pitched in the minors yesterday.

Pitching yesterday has no effect on how they count the days for the 60 Day IL? So his 60 Day IL stint can end roughly July 1?

Does moving him to the 60 Day IL effectively clear a 40 man spot until about July 1, while otherwise not having any impact on Mejia or the roster?

Then, come July 1, a 40 man roster spot will have to be cleared, assuming Mejia is healthy?

He pitched a rehab assignment in the minor leagues yesterday, and actually last week. He can rehab up to 30 days and I'm guessing the Twins will use the full 30 days. He won't be called up by July 1 anyway, so the 60 Days will not hold him back.

Correct. If the 40-man roster is full, the 60 Day IL can be used. That just means that Mejia will have to remain on the IL until that 60 Days is up. Could be 61 days... could be out for the year.

When Mejia is healthy and they decide to put him back on the 25 man roster, he will be removed from the 60 Day IL and the Twins will have a decision to make. Someone will have to come off of the 40-man... and that can be Mejia too.

Well, here's to hoping Poppen doesn't go all Romero and fail to get an out when asked to provide some length.

This seems an appropriate, if slightly dirty, intro ... if he gets the call:

Tortuga STARTING at 2nd Base! Arraez at shortstop. Why not bring up Gordon then! Give him a week with some games at short (and second). We need to look at him. Thought for sure they would rest Sano. All those extra swings the Big Guy did.

Poppen is deserving, but, yes, what about Jake Reed. Now we HAVE TO KEEP POPPEN on the roster. So we have two over - Torreyes (who will not be added back on when his "whatever" ends) and Mejia will have to bump someone at some point, maybe. Who do you think the Twins could lose off the current 40-man?

I canceled my movie ticket tonight so I could watch the game. I REALLY hope it's not a Tortuga night.

Well, I have terrible, terrible news for you. If there’s anything I can do to help you get that movie ticket back....

Torreyes is already "off" the 40-man in the sense that he doesn't count towards the 40 (restricted list).

I'd guess Moya might be the next cut, but yeah, trades could be a factor soon too.

Poppen has options, he can be sent up and down.

It is pretty awful, but this trainwreck might not be one I can look away from.

Rocco must hate Gibson with that middle infield.

I get not loving him. But as someone who watched hundreds if not thousands of at-bats by Nick Punto and Denny Hocking, I don't get the hate. As uitlity players go, you could do much worse.

I get that you probably can't ask Garver to play tonight, but having 5 lefties in the line-up against a LH pitcher while Garver, Polanco and Schoop sit is tough.

They could at least contribute with the glove. Being physically capable of occupying space isn't defense.

And then there's this little nugget:

So is he really better than those guys?

Yes. He's not been terrible with the glove.  Many years Nick Punto struggled to break .200 and wasn't even capable of hitting a fly ball deep enough to get a sacrifice fly. So Gardy gave him 500 ABs.

I mean, his defensive numbers beg to differ, but to each their own.

Also, Tortuga's OPS+ of 68 is Hocking and Punto-like. So any "positives" his bat gives them over him is negated by his defense.

Please direct any and all complaints about the lineup, directly to the Twins organization :)

At one time I was blocked on Twitter by Drew Butera. I guess I could go for the whole organization.

Didn't take long for the turtle haters to come out of their shells...

Never went in mine. I loathe mediocrity.

There’s probably no one in the pen who can go multiple innings tonight aside from Poppen, Reed’s not a multi inning guy as far as I can tell.

I still want to see Staskak though. He’s averaging nearly 2 innings an outing.

That’s right. Who could ever forget about Ron Coomer?

"family emergency"

I heard that Parker left Minnesota immediately after the game ended, so it seems that there is a legitimate family emergency. Methinks if this wouldn't have come up, Littell would have been optioned for Poppen.

While his current stats disagree with me I still like the turtle.  A little more plate discipline and more time at catcher and I think he looks pretty good.  He doesn't strike out so BABIP has got to be his friend eventually.  If he can find a way to be a little more selective at the plate it will give him a chance to barrell more balls.  He might be passable third but he hasn't shown much power recently so a bit of a liability there right now.  The guy is a gamer and typically makes smart baseball plays.  He was crushing the ball at AAA I still like him.
