Odd about Rodney

I feel like there's usually a few deals that become public in the subsequent minutes.

no one may have wanted the FRE experience... His name never came up... so unless something under the radar trickles in, I think he's a Twin through the end of the season.

Thad lavine said they werent trading people with team control on radio broadcast...except were blown away by pressley offer.

Well, a 41 year old that can still hit 98 on the gun, and is second in active saves, and has an Experience named after him, all for 4.5 million, I'd keep him too.

He is tied for the league lead in blown saves at 6, but St. Ryan Pressly, Familia and Duke have 4, Brad Hand has 5, so for a team fighting for a .500 record, Rodney is fine.

Rodney still has great stuff, sometimes so electric it would make the major league announcer blush.

But it’s not like he’s cooked, he still throws hard

He's cheap enough you can pick the option up and use him next year, even if it's not as the closer. Or you can possibly trade him in the off-season.

the roster spot is worth more than whatever few saves they can eek out of him.

First... Let me put on my plastic whatever thing before I say this.

I'd pick up his option for 2019.

OK... Throw your tomatoes at me... I'm ready for them.  :)

I agree. I am sure would we both add the “as long as ends the season healthy”.

Additional cost to keep him is 4 million. That is an amount they can easily write off if he isn’t effective.

Maybe they want to exercise his 2019 option?

Mike Berardino was saying that the Twins were planning on exercising the option, so he wasn't a priority to trade.

Personally I'd like to see the Twins bring in a better (possibly younger?) closer and use Rodney in an 8th inning/damage-stopping role. He's a good closer when the lead is more than 1 run (yes, I know, all closers are) but his margin for error is too low for my liking.

Kimbrel, Herrera, Britton, Miller, Familia, Kelly, Oh, Allen and maybe Soria are all free agents next year.

Assuming the Twins are only able to get one of Machado or Harper, they're going to have lots of money to throw at that group.

The real reason Rodney wasn't traded today: he is grandfathered under the old trading deadline of June 15.

(Might explain why we "had" to acquire Belisle before that date too?)

A similar grandfathering provision helps explain why Bartolo Colon is still allowed to pitch underhand from a box 45 feet away from home plate.

I'd prefer the Twins don't bring him back because I'd like to actually enjoy watching the end of games...

If you can convince me he won't be used as a closer then maybe I can stomach the team picking up his option; maybe....

Nobody wants Rodney.

Can you imagine a GM bringing in a 41-year old at the deadline to close games and having him blow up in your face --- as only Rodney can?

And, Rodney won't go for set-up at this point, why would he?

So, match is made:  Twins and Rodney, nothing but love arrows.

Till death do we part.

How would he have a choice? What is he going to do if he is callled upon in the 7th or 8th? Refuse to go in the game? That would be a breach of his contract.

Care to provide ANY evidence to corroborate that statement? Or did you just throw it out there to justify some sort of anger you have at the Twins?

Rodney is a time bomb, but I've seen nothing to indicate he's a me-first kind of guy, quite the opposite, seems like the young bullpen guys like him. I'd guess the reason he's always a closer is because that's the perception of him around the league for over a decade now.

Posted

I'd say, pick up the option.  Let Rodney continue to pick up the save totals.  I don't care who gets the save.  Every closer blows a few each year.

Then, save those better bullpen arms and bring them in high leverage situations when you really need your best arm out there and the game is actually on the line.

That is an amount they can easily apply toward a better relief option, instead. I haven't looked at who will be available, but there will be someone.

Rodney might be cost-effective by some metric, but there's something worthwhile about being simply effective without the qualifying term, too. Not to mention, being reliable.

He's an admirable guy. He seems to be completely unflappable. I still don't want him. I didn't want him when they signed him. I lost some faith in the FO when they did.

The 11th worst team in the majors, picking up the contract of a 42 year old (he will be 3/18/19) pitcher that leads the league in blown saves, yea can't see anything going wrong with that.

I will add that last night should be the last time Belisle ever pitches for the Twins again with Slegers,Littell,Duffey, Curtiss,Busenitz sitting in AAA.

No, he just retires.

Crissakes, he's going to be 42 next year.  He doesn't have to pitch anymore if he starts moving down the relief food chain.
