jkcarew Verified Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I’m mean, he’s likely to help this year and next. Has struggled as a closer, but very good otherwise. Was the price too high? Who knows. Disappointed on not capitalizing on Jeffers, though. MMBoys93 and D.C Twins 2

Outside of some bumpy control cause he’s you know…20, he’s striking people out at a rate you just don’t see. Well Hoffman has 75K's in 48 innings at the MLB level, so hopefully he can provide something down the stretch. Sucks to lose good prospects but Hoffman has been doing well as of late and maybe with him the Twins don't lose that game against the M's??? I mean it isnt worth it if the Twins dont make the playoffs, its low key worth it if they do make the playoffs. So have to wait and see. Could flip him next year too?? Coach 1

MMBoys93 Verified Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Assuming they are done, this is a very meh trade deadline for a team that said that they are buyers when they shouldn’t be. Jeffers and Larnach could’ve gotten back a really solid return but instead we get an older reliever who was very good three years ago, but has lost a lot on his fast ball, a starting pitcher who I still struggle to see having a fit on this team and a reliever with great strikeout numbers, but is about the least clutch closer in the league today. White Sox and Guardians both did better today and are still better teams. Just like I figured, this was a face saving exercise by Jim Pohlad. “We actually tried this time!” Shaitan, roger, MGX and 10 others 2 11
TL Verified Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Have to trust their evaluation on this one that Hill won’t turn into a top 3 starter. If not then it’s all good. We won’t know for 4 years or so.
DJL44 Old-Timey Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I would have outrighted Klein in the offseason, if not sooner. Not worth protecting on the 40-man roster. Pena is a second baseman with no pop in his bat. It is essentially Hoffman for Hill. Hill has a career 6.5 BB per 9 and has been worse this season at 7.4. Who knows if he can put it together before he becomes Rule 5 eligible in 2028. USAFChief, Coach, TL and 6 others 9

It’s less about Hoffman for Hill and more about “buying” actually meaning acquiring 3 pitchers who were way better in the past. and losing out on a haul for Jeffers in the meantime while watching the 2 teams ahead of you in the standings getting better than the Twins got. But that’s exactly how I figured “buying” would go lol jkcarew and milldam 1 1
weitz41 Verified Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Don't care for the cost but they're far worse trades today. basically, look at any Red Sox trade. Still could use a starter looking Singer.... I guess. DJL44 1

Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago I've come around on this specific trade. I'd prefer they kept HIll and dealt him in a package for a SP next year, but whatever. It is basically a HS guy who can't throw strikes for a closer or 8th inning guy for this year and next. So, it's a fine trade, if not what I'd do. DJL44, Patzky, USAFChief and 4 others 7

Cris E Verified Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Astros were out on Larnach once they picked up Varsho. They only needed one OF and that one plays D too.
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Interesting, Hoffman has been quite good and his peripherals suggest his ERA is higher than it should be. He's under contract for $12.67M next year according to Spotrac, that's a big number for the bullpen - at least, the Falvine regime was terrified to pay any reliever that much. I am a-okay with moving Hill, I don't believe in him as a prospect and I would assume his stock might fall given the rough year he's had. Of course he's still young for the level of competition, but I don't see him as being close to a top 10 prospect of ours. I would have liked to see Klein get moved to the pen full-time, but it's better to move him than not to use him. IMO his ceiling is a middle reliever in the majors. Pena is listed as Fangraph's #48 prospect for us, I am fine moving a guy like that. Gotta say though, I wish the 2023 team had acquired a couple good relievers at the deadline like Minter and Hoffman. It really isn't that hard to do, any that base team was a lot better than the 2026 squad. Zoll > Falvine for now... I just don't like the Kremer trade. TL, AlwaysinModeration, Cris E and 4 others 7

But that’s exactly how I figured “buying” would go lol Yeah getting into the either buying of selling is definitely a question as they are on the line to where they could go either way. However, at the beginning of this season I would have guessed that they would be way way worse than where they are at now. Also include had someone told us back in February that Lewis and Wallner would both spend a good amount of time in the minors we would have all been like go ahead and sell now. But for some reason they are in it. So here we are kind of in a quandary. Patzky 1

A reliever who has sucked for 2 years and is still owed 15 million…and traded a borderline top 100 guy for him. 3.98 ERA over 43+ innings is not a poor pitcher…..typical relief roller coaster w/bad outings and then a few decent ones. Nance? Adams will be sent down to make room. Hoffman - Minter - Rojas - Morris - Gomez - Funderburk - Rogers ……… Matthews eventually? Minter - Hoffman - Nance all are experienced, along with Rogers. That doesn’t get guys out but it helps in tight situations. Patzky 1

We needed another late inning guy and Hoffman has done that and done it well in the past, including the last 2 months. He's a little like Griffin Jax was, a very good to great 7th and 8th inning guy who turns into a pumpkin in a save situation. I see Minter and he handling a lot the 8th inning duties with Morris in the 8th and about 1/3 of the save situations, and Gomez taking the other 2/3 of the save situations.
