Matt Shoemaker DFA’d and Derek Law is taking his place on the MLB roster.

So, another 40-man roster switch. Hamilton has to be wondering "What th-" in St. Paul. So now the Twins have Law, Jax as potential musical chairs. Smeltzer is throwing. How long is Colome for the Twins, although he has been okay in mop-up settings. And Burrows. Will it be musical chairs as we see Gilmartin, Barraclough and others (who knows, Albers might even get a game to comeback).

The inevitable has occurred. Thought something might be up when they left him in last night to take a beating.

I would have thought by now this would be a lengthy thread with posters reminiscing about their favourite Shoemaker moments.

Certainly can't argue with this move, but I can over Derek Law's callup.  He was terrible early on, went down to AAA where he has run up an ERA of 4.5+.  When is the FO going to realize its past time to bring up some of their prospects from either AA or AAA?  If law's the best bullpen option this organization has, we are in worse trouble than even I thought.   Grrr!!

I really dislike watching Derek Law pitch because of his habit of frantically adjusting his pants between pitches. I pointed it out to my wife at a Saints game and we couldn't stop laughing. Now of course I can't help wondering if he was trying to disguise that he was going for something under his belt.

Either that, or he put squirrels down his pants for the purposes of gambling.

The front office has indeed assembled a poor group of reinforcements, although some of that is exacerbated by injuries at the moment. I just posted this in another thread:

As far as replacements, while Shoemaker has been in the pen, we've lost Pineda, Dobnak, Farrell, and Duran to the IL, joining Stashak (recently moved to the 60-day IL), Smeltzer, Colina, and Thorpe. (Maeda, Thielbar, and Shaun Anderson were also on the IL at the start of Shoemaker's pen assignment, but have since been activated.)

We've already had Jax and Coulombe on the 26-man roster, and ahead of Shoemaker on the pecking order; now Derek Law is returning to take Shoemaker's place. It's not a deep group at the moment.

Two of the main alternatives to Law would be Barraclough (14 BB in 18.1 IP) and Hamilton (18 BB in 20.2 IP).

Andrew Vasquez has re-surfaced, although I don't know how they feel about him. Great K numbers at AAA but 14 BB and 6 HBP in 24 IP.

Veteran Nick Vincent and prospects Yennier Cano and Beau Burrows recently arrived in St. Paul, although with only 3, 4, and 1 appearances so far, respectively.

With Pineda making a rehab start for St. Paul today, Law may be gone again after a few days.

I thought that's what we were doing here?!

Don't understand Law move. Last 15 days he has only pitched 2.2 IP with 3 K, 2 BB, and 1 ER, Hamilton has pitched 5 IP,  9K, 3 BB, 1 ER, Vasquez 8.1 IP, 14 K, 3 BB, 1 ER. Seems to be better options than Law.

My favorite moment was seeing that someone else likes John Prine (RIP) in the thread about Shoemaker's release.

Edit:  In fact, I think I'm sporting an Illegal Smile thinking about Shoemaker's release.

Law may just be a placeholder, if Pineda returns in a few days.

Also, Hamilton has some wild walk numbers for the season (18 in 20.2 IP), and Vasquez has 4 HBP in those recent innings too.

(slow golf clap for the FO.... only about 6 weeks late...but congrats...or something)

As Otto listed above, I suspect they’re only “late” on this because injuries have forced keeping Shoemaker around this long.

It was certainly a mistake to sign him at all but once that happened and the injuries piled up, running him out there for WAY TOO LONG was pretty much the only option remaining.

Another complicating factor to adding Cano, or Barnes, or whomever: it looks like we'll be sellers this month, and we may want the flexibility of taking some 40-man roster guys back in trade (or getting near-40-man guys who might need Rule 5 protection more than, say, Barnes for example).

Not that this will keep us from adding a guy who we view as legitimately ready on their own merits, but it might discourage us from adding too many guys just for the sake of not seeing Shoemaker or Law again.

In general, fans don’t pay nearly enough attention or give consideration to potential 40-man issues. Once a guy is there and you care about said guy at all, he’s there for a long time. It’s not a move to make lightly.

I get that....but Cano is how old? At some point, likely this year, he'll be added.

If they really feel a 40 man crunch (2B and OF), they should add prospects to their veteran sell offs to get better prospect returns (or trade for guys that don't need to be added).

Way past due for Shoemaker.  However, it was totally inexcusable and very unprofessional the way Baldelli used him last night.  To leave him out there that long and throwing that many pitches was very disrespectful to Shoemaker and the fielder's who had to play behind him.  Very rude, unprofessional, and classless.

Wait a minute,  if he doesn't get claimed, he better not Go To St. Paul AND PITCH AT MY FIRST EVER GAME AT CHS FIELD!!!!

I gotta think because of his service time he can elect free-agency.

I disagree. Should he have sent out a player they may need today to win?
