I had pretty much given up any hope that the Twins would ever sign a top end free agent. I've never been so happy to be proven wrong.

 

If the Twins manage a trade for a playoff caliber starter, this could quickly turn from the most depressing off-season in memory to the most exciting.

It's poetic when you think about paying him basically 23M a season. I can't recall the last player the Twins gave 23M a season to right now but I do recall the last couple of years were no where near worth it.

He’s a 2 at 3b anyway. Of course Sano is at best a 3, and Polanco is a 3. Still have D issues. It will help if Buxton can stop running into walls and sliding head first.

My God. I never thought this would happen. I mean, the Twins offense now is absolutely mind-boggling. Yikes. Just wanted to weigh in quickly before having read much at all about it. Quite a week in baseball so far, and it's only Tuesday. WOW!

The Twins are now in really good long term shape with respect to their the position players. Garver, Sano, Arraez, Polanco, Donaldson, and Kepler are all under team control through at least 2023 with Buxton around through 2022. With Lewis, Kirilloff, Larnach, and Rooker nearly ready the Twins should have an incredibly strong line-up for the foreseeable future.

It's interesting that the deal includes what is effectively deferred money (the $8 million buyout of Donaldson's age 38 season). His actual annual salary of $21 million in the four guaranteed years will still leave the Twins with tons of payroll room in 2021 and beyond. Obviously for 2020 they must be closing in on the limit, which will impact their SP trade options.

What a day! Our offseason went from treading water to an improvement from the team last year. I’m totally fine with them getting any player who will provide elite value to the team. There’s plenty of evidence showing that WAR value is the same regardless of position and this move maximizes that for the Twins only realistic offseason moves.

MLB.tv had Boston Red Sox reporter comment that the Alex Cora/ sign stealing

debacle really hurts the Red Sox with the expected loss of future 1st Round Draft picks and that the Red Sox farm system is very weak.  Seems that this should give Falvine considerable trade leverage for Chris Sale that they didn't have a just a week ago?

As a fan this is fun. If this results in them not obtaining better pitching then it is a mistake. And no a good defensive 3rd baseman doesn’t solve the infield woes. It will be fun to watch!

Interesting thought on Sale, I was thinking Price. Overpay in prospect capital, but minimize injury risk. Always, always remember to bring your glove!
