Duffey and Austin called up

According to LEN III and others, Duffey is taking Rodney's place.  And Austin is being called up also, although no corresponding move has been made yet.

I want to see Austin, I don't need to see Duffey.

Have to think Morrison or maybe a Grossman DFA.... one of the two, right?

Grossman is on the DL so Austin wouldn’t be taking his spot. So that leaves LoMo or Mauer. If Mauer waves his no-trade clause, I could see someone trading for him to assume a back-up role. More likely LoMo is gone.

Who is going to be the new closer? Addison Reed, the $8 million man?

I'd have to say he's most likely. Even though Belisle did it last year it had better not be him.

Do we have anybody else named Tyler?

Worth noting that neither Mauer nor Morrison played in Thursday's game, so maybe one of them is going on the DL.

Maybe they are checking over Morrison to see if he caught the bad knee from Belisle. His leadership may not be contagious, but perhaps his "injuries" are!

He'd better have a new-found ability to throw 3 out of every 6 curveballs for strikes, because otherwise the hitters are going to be sitting on his heater.

I hope Wilson/Garver have the courage to simply keep putting two fingers down, except the occasional inside fastball, for as long as it takes. I don't think that will work either - I just don't happen to think anything can work.

My God, can you imagine the comment sections on the Twins Facebook page, and the local dailies if Mauer waived his no-trade and they actually moved him?

I think it highly unlikely, bordering on impossible, but I'd consider taking the rest of the day off, heading home and reading each and every comment.

The more I think about it, the more this sounds like the Belisle situation all over again (where they announced they were activating Magill, then took their time to find an injury for Belisle).

My guess is we'll hear about Morrison to the DL this afternoon?

Unilateral leg weakness, so as to not upstage the other first baseman.

I have little interest in seeing Duffey again either, but I might guess this is just a perfunctory move before he is removed from the 40-man soon or in the offseason.

Looks like his strikeouts are up and his HR are down even compared to his prior minor league numbers though. Maybe he has made some changes. He was dabbling with a slider when he was up earlier this year, anyone know if he was throwing it at Rochester? If it's become a usable pitch he might be a completely different pitcher, that is, not a one trick pony.

It's probably the right move to give him one more shot.

With that said, still blech.

Yup. Given the circumstances, we might as well take one more look at him in August. If they like what they see, we can look at him further in September; if they don't like what they see, we can waive him on Sep. 1 and call up a new 40-man addition.

I gotta say, I'm happy Austin is coming up before September. I have no idea if he's going to be good or not, but they need to know. He hit ok when up earlier this year, not great, not bad.

Duffey? I hope they throw CB after CB and see what happens.

Good luck to both of them!

Worth noting that since we've renewed his contract 6 times, Duffey will be eligible for minor league free agency if we don't keep him on the 40-man roster this offseason, even if he clears waivers. Although he also has a minor league option remaining for 2019, if we keep him on the roster.

Chase De Jong is in a similar spot, in terms of contractual status and remaining options.

Interesting on De Jong......I wonder if he should be in the Twins bullpen right now, and not Duffey?

Probably room for both if you want, assuming Drake isn't sticking around.

Although does De Jong have the stuff to suggest he might be good in the pen?

I believe both Duffey and Austin are out of options for next season, so they will either have to make the 25 man roster next season or be let go. Makes sense to give them an extended look to help make decisions this off-season.

Duffey still has an option remaining for 2019. (He has only used options in 2016 and 2018 so far -- he stayed in the majors all of 2017, and spent fewer than 20 days on optional assignment in 2015.)

Interesting, I didn't know that using an option doesn't count if it was a short stay in the minors.

It would be great if he actually has something new to offer. Wouldn't it be a nice surprise to find we have a BP asset for next year we did not know about. I doubt this is the case but I will be watching and hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

They won't trade Mauer. He is family.

If the presence of Belisle on the 25 man doesn't tell everyone that the front office sees no bullpen help in "all the young arms" at Rochester, seeing multi-time failure Duffey return should at least lead one to suspect that idea, no?

It’s a business. If he waived his no-trade clause and someone would give us something good in return, they should do it despite anyone’s nostalgia. I don’t think it will happen but I don’t think it’s completely out of the realm of possibility.
