wsnydes Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 If the presence of Belisle on the 25 man doesn't tell everyone that the front office sees no bullpen help in "all the young arms" at Rochester, seeing multi-time failure Duffey return should at least lead one to suspect that idea, no?I think there's some truth to that, however I wonder how much Molitor's reluctance of using inexperienced players unless forced to plays into that decision.
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Interesting, I didn't know that using an option doesn't count if it was a short stay in the minors. Yup: https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3521 If a player spends 20 or more days of an MLB regular season on Optional Assignment to the minors, an option year is expended and the player does not accrue MLB Service Time while on Optional Assignment. If a player spends 19 or fewer days of an MLB regular season on Optional Assignment, an option year is NOT expended and the player does accrue MLB Service Time while on Optional Assignment. And a player in the minor leagues isn't considered on "optional assignment" unless they are on the 40-man roster. That means in 2015, Duffey wasn't on "optional assignment" despite playing in the minors from April through July. Only in August, when the Twins added him to the 40-man roster and then sent him back down for 7 days, was he considered to be on "optional assignment". (On the flip side, Duffey got MLB service time credit for those 7 days too.)
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Looks like the corresponding move is Mejia to the DL. #$^@%&^@$$^@# Not only is Mejia hurt, but that means Austin will maybe sit on the bench while Morrison plays. I hope to be wrong about Austin sitting...
Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 They won't trade Mauer. He is family. It’s a business Ooh, how about a "family business"?
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 It would be great if he actually has something new to offer. Wouldn't it be a nice surprise to find we have a BP asset for next year we did not know about. I doubt this is the case but I will be watching and hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Yeah, I'd think it's unlikely to happen, but when bullpen guys pick up a new pitch and turn their careers around, it's usually the slider. But those guys are also typically lefties.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Looks like the corresponding move is Mejia to the DL.Ahh, makes sense. Forgot he tweaked his wrist.

I hope to be wrong about Austin sitting... It probably depends on who's making the call. If it's Molitor, yeah probably Austin gets two starts and a couple of pinch hitting appearances. And since they're adding another hitter instead of a reliever, maybe he gets a relief appearance in a blow out also.

jud6312 Verified Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Ooooh, so Austin gets to come up and sit on the bench until Mejia's spot in the rotation comes up again? At least Molitor will have someone new to talk to on the bench while Weapon X flails helplessly at anything that isn't a belt-high, center-cut fastball.
jud6312 Verified Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Apparently they face two lefties soon, so hopefully that's not the case.Yeah, but Weapon X is hitting a robust .218 against lefties, and only .178 against righties. Wait, that can't be right, right? I came to make a "Morrison is equally inept versus lefties and righties joke," and he's actually better against lefties? Apparently, I'm the Logan Morrison of making Logan Morrison jokes.

Otto von Ballpark Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Apparently they face two lefties soon, so hopefully that's not the case.Yup. Berardino even mentions that, so I'd expect to see Austin at least in those 2 games. Morrison is still playing more than I'd like, but he has sat for 1 game in each of the last 5 series. Twice the day after hitting a HR, no less.
VATwinsFan Verified Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Looks like it's gonna be a long last 7 weeks of the season, although I looking forward to seeing what Austin can do and if Moya can keep up the good work. It also be nice to see a "surprise" call up like Wade or Lewis.
bighat Verified Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Meanwhile, Dozier hit another HR in Dodger blue last night. In the 9th inning, 2-run shot. The guy's killing it in L.A. Not that I wish the Twins had kept him. But still. Ugh.

By Statcast, expected wOBA (xwOBA) since the trade: Dozier .427Forsythe .315 https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_search?hfPT=&hfAB=&hfBBT=&hfPR=&hfZ=&stadium=&hfBBL=&hfNewZones=&hfGT=R%7C&hfC=&hfSea=2018%7C&hfSit=&player_type=batter&hfOuts=&opponent=&pitcher_throws=&batter_stands=&hfSA=&game_date_gt=2018-08-01&game_date_lt=2018-08-09&hfInfield=&team=&position=&hfOutfield=&hfRO=&home_road=&batters_lookup%5B%5D=572821&batters_lookup%5B%5D=523253&hfFlag=&hfPull=&metric_1=&hfInn=&min_pitches=0&min_results=0&group_by=name&sort_col=xwoba&player_event_sort=h_launch_speed&sort_order=desc&min_pas=0#results For 2018, MLB average xwOBA is .328. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/expected_statistics?type=batter&year=2018 Interestingly, that league figure has been rising each year of the Statcast era (since 2015): .308, .316, .321, and now .328.

Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Position flexibility. It's the new market inefficiency.Have you been talking to Brian again?
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Sooo, Mejia to the DL, Austin and Duffy up. Doesn't effect Santana today or Gibson tomorrow, would mean starting Odorizzi on 3 days rest instead of 4 on Sunday. Then a day off. Looks like a classic move to buy time. You either make another move by Sunday to open a spot for Romero (Gonsalves just pitched yesterday, Romero last Sunday). We should expect a roster move by Sunday. No way they pitch Odo on 3 days rest ... unless their plan is a BP game and only have him pitch a couple innings. It's buying time before something. Just what, who knows. Or just filling the roster until they decide who makes the start on Sunday. Who is scheduled in Rochester for Sunday?
Craig Arko Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Maybe they try the ‘opener’ thing on Sunday.

Halsey Hall Verified Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Duffey has done nothing to deserved coming back.
curt1965 Verified Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 Looks like I’m in the minority, but I’m not unhappy to see Duffy back up. Maybe he isn’t any good, but in his rookie season he was the Twins best pitcher down the stretch. He has struggled since, but I love his bulldog attitude. He tends to be his worst enemy at times, but this is the perfect occasion to see if he’s improved. There is absolutely nothing to lose. If he sucks, start the revolving door with the Rochester relievers.I hope Austin plays tonite and all 3 games against Detroit. There is no way he can be worse than Morrison!
diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 I have to ask, why is everyone souring on Duffey. I know he's failed a few times, but he was pretty lights out for a while as well. It certainly doesn't hurt to see if he's got something we can work with. Isn't that what we wanted when the team waived the white flag?
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2018 Posted August 10, 2018 I promise to everyone. If Tyler Austin isn't starting tonight... I'm going to type something unflattering about my favorite team.
