LENIII reports that Gardenhire recruited Joe Vavra away from the Twins.

Same article also indicates that Ron Anderson might be Detroit's next bullpen coach.

The Twins are looking for a new bench coach both internally and externally.

One of the good things about Falvey being young is that he won’t have any kids to draft for a long time. Avila, Gardy and Vavra can almost field a team between their progeny that they’ve signed.

Come on ... do I really need to say it ... again? Regardless your feelings about Vavra, be respectful.

Wouldn't the job be Pickler's now?

Could be and I'd be in favor unless his current role of a quasi liaison between Molitor and the front office is compromised because the bench coach is more clearly under Molitor.

Not naming a specific name, but isn't this the perfect time to hire a Latin coach?

I certainly would not limit the search to those from Latin America but the coach who best serves the needs of the organization could very well be someone from Latin America.

Maybe Gene Glynn gets "promoted"?

I like him but he seemed to have all the right moves as the 3B coach, I hate to lose his excellent eye there. With today's stress on measurements of all kinds, getting those calls correct might be the most overlooked aspect of the game.

Rudy Hernandez was forced to sit in the locker room during games this year. Maybe they move Pickler to bench coach and let Hernandez into the dugout?

im not a fan of Vavra, but if Falvine thought this, wouldn’t he have been let go at the end of the season?

Yes, I think Pauly did a little negotiating.... lost of the Pitching Coach but one on this one... until Gardy came knocking...

I'm indifferent on Vavra, not really knowing what he did or didn't contribute. But I think Sconnie has a very good point, that if the FO didn't feel Vavra contributed in the manner they wanted, he would have been out at the end of the season, as was the pitching coach. I don't think it's a matter of Molitor 'winning' or not. Vavra wasn't really a 'Molitor guy' anyway ... he was brought on by Gardy. So, it's not surprising he'll be moving on and I wish him well going forward.

So how does this work? I know there are restrictions on the number of coaches a team can have active, and remember when MLB officially allowed the 7th coach. But still only 6 can be on the field or in the dugout during a game?

Park Bench!

That looks like a nice respite spot. I wouldn't mind sitting there for an hour or three looking at nature and contemplating life.

Hideki Kuriyama.  Bonus points if you know why without looking it up.

Otani's current manager.

Good luck adjusting to the US way of playing baseball.   Bench coach is not an internship ;)

Considering Molitor's decisions are sometimes questionable, some new blood at bench coach is a good idea.

I wouldn't worry about it ... 75% of the job of the bench coach is to be a cheerleader for the players. 20% is holding the clipboard, 5% is filling in for the manager. Just find a charismatic jock with a few brain cells and hire him.

Is now the time to ask - What does a bench coach do?  We have a pitching coach, a hitting coach, a first base coach, a third base coach, a bullpen coach and a manager.  We have a coach for analytics and a minor league full of coaches.  We even have three former Twins hired by the FO to be cheerleaders for the team. What does this man do besides keeping the manager from falling asleep during the commercials?

See above. The bench coach is:

1) The Manager's assistant

2) The Manager's/Coaches liaison to the players if a message isn't getting through

3) The PR guy who keeps the clubhouse energy level high for the players

4) Fills in for the manager after an ejection/suspension/illness/whatever

The bench coach has to know everyone, get along with everyone, get players motivated/excited, etc. Actual decision making is low. Skills required would be charisma and leadership with a dominant personality. Minnesota Nice need not apply. :P

Did Rick Anderson change his first name so somebody would hire him again?
