To be sure not every player will want or need time off. But it is equally true that many are dinged up to some degree and could use a break or legitimately go on the IL. Of course there is nothing to be ashamed of or no moral failing involved in that. Lol

Heavy walletitis has been known to prematurely end sports careers. Something about throwing hips out of allignment which can lead to chronic groin pulls. Not that I would know anything about that... but anyway, a couple weeks off to play pickleball might straighten them right out.

I posted this this morning. Don't want to toot my own horn, but I think Falvine is reading my posts.

"I would give each of the starters a break. Some more than others like maybe a 10 day stint for those that need it. Forget the 6 man, use Keuchel to give them a break moving him through the rotation one spot at a time. Kind of like a six man but with IL stints if necessary. When this is done you will know exactly what you have, which may be 7 viable starters including Varland. Of course by then it would be time to sweet talk Kenta into the pen."

Yes, clearly the FO saw my post in last night’s Game Thread and then had that confirmed by your excellent addition. But I would never toot my own horn either.

“I’ve been on the ‘promote Keuchel for a couple of Ryan’s starts’ bandwagon for a while. What is the actual status on Keuchel?

“We know that Keuchel opted out, but there have been several reports of the Twins having “a couple of days” to add him. Do they maintain exclusivity for a certain number of days? If so, how many?

“I note that Keuchel last pitched on Friday, and the Twins are two days into a stretch with 13 straight. They haven’t announced weekend starters. I’d welcome seeing Keuchel Friday night.”

Amazing how many of you point and jump to "phantom injury" over Ryan admitting it was something he was trying to pitch thru.  Either way, I think he could use a little break.

Agreed. I caught the end of an interview with Ryan as I turned on the radio. It sounds very legit.

And athletes certainly know what it’s like to have a groin injury.

Convenient - ever wonder why Keuchel did not depart for greener pastures?

I would almost guarantee they told him they would find a way to get him onto the roster after the deadline.   Whether it be an injured starter or 6th starter or bullpen piece.

Or could it be there was no interest in him.

Same comments posted by me 3-4 times……seen half dozen others as well. If FO is reading this stuff for anything but laughs, we’re in trouble.

I'm going to guess it's a make-believe groin injury.

Generally if going make believe you would use shoulder or tired arm that is almost impossible to refute.  Groin isn't typically the go to for a "made up" injury but anything is possible I guess.

I tend to assume the best in people, so I have a sense this is another time when the front office was very up front with him, keeping him abreast of their thinking and their desire for him to stay around.

There’s something to be said for treating an employee with dignity. I read a Tweet from his wife that suggested the same.

No to Dobnak. Hitting .279 against him in AAA, 1.55 wHip.

I don’t disagree on “No to Dobnak”.

For context though the International League ERA (5.26) is 23% greater than Dobnak’s ERA of 4.26. Relative to league that is slightly better than Chris Williams wRC+ that is 20% greater than the league. The run scoring context of the IL can give us a very different perception of the performance of Dobnak and Williams relative to the league.

Love the team but this is one very weird Twins group. How in the world can a starter not let the training staff or anyone else know that they have a groin injury? Either there is a lack of trust, poor communication or something else going on. I will admit, I do not like Mr. Baldelli as our manager, but if I were in his shoes, I would struggle to have Joe Ryan start for me again this year.

That being said.........I simply don't get Baldelli. He lets Ryan get shelled again with 104 pitches in 4 innings and the next night pulls Gray after 70+ pitches while keeping the Twins in winning position. Not the first time the fearless seed spitter has baffled me in the last week............wow, I wish this team would jettison the guy.

Hope Keuchel does well for this team. Not being able to hit 90, he'd better throw some darts at the corners. By the way, get rid of Gallo, Miranda, find out how to work Buxton out of town with an agreement to play elsewhere and say adios to Mr. Baldelli. Oh yeah, figure out how we will keep Polanco, Lewis, Julien, Correa, Farmer and Solano on this club.....

Go Twins! Twins Geezer out..........

Unfortunate.

The Twins are an extremely low-energy team and Joe Ryan is one of the few that shows some fire and pluck. I know that talking about clubhouse vibes is frowned upon here because it can't be measured by the DiamondIQ MAX EvoMatic Stat Machine, but personalities matter.

Joe cares and wears it on his sleeve. The number of healthy guys on this team who give a damn is down to 2 or 3.

Well, it's certainly a convenient time to have an injury. And actually, I hope that there HAS been a physical problem that has affected Ryan's recent performances. Something has obviously gone south for him recently. And hey, Keuchel is worth a shot at this point. If he's pounded in August, just go and release him.

Ryan pitched a total of 147 inn last year. The meter already reads 126 for '23.

If you give him a 20% increase that puts him just shy of 180, and the Twins are 2/3 of the way though the season so he was right on track.

I guess I was suggesting he might be pooped. All athletes and their bodies are different. Ryan is on a pace for 180 and that might, repeat might be excessive for him. Year 5 in the pros.

Good piece on his groin injury in the Strib, where Ryan admits to keeping quiet about groin difficulties in last couple of months, hoping it would subside on its own,

He will get lit up and/or destroyed almost immediately.  But deep down ,we already knew that.

Do you think he’ll give up 4 Hr or 6 HR in 3 or 4 innings?……we’re trying to avoid Ryan’s last few starts. Not expecting Sandy Koufax…..nor a young Dallas Kuechel. Trying to get to the 5th inning without giving up more than 2-3 runs.

He’s experienced and used to contact.

If we get 2 out of 3 “reasonable starts” we’re ahead.

Lewis to the OF in (3 weeks)  or ‘24…….LF (Wallner to RF)

Polanco at 3B

Julien at 2B

CC at SS

Kirilloff at 1B

Farmer & Solano & Castro in reserve rolls, same as ‘23.

Would really like an off-season trade for Stuart Fairchild from Reds organization, to play CF.

Gallo & Kepler gone (unless Max is a playoff hero)

I'm going to guess it's a make-believe groin injury.

Much more likely that this is a relatively young player who's never had any injury problems before thinking he can just get through it without any help. "Well, why didn't he tell anyone if he was hurt?!?" yeah, 'cause this is the first time a professional athlete thought "meh, this is no big deal, i'll be fine" and turned out to be wrong...

I hope Kuechel can fill in here, but I'm doubtful. His MLB record recently has been dreadful and I'm just not sure his slop can get guys out at this level any longer. Hope I'm wrong!

(And it's certainly reasonable to give him a shot right now rather than lose him for nothing, but Varland still might be the better option, even if he's been up and down at AAA)

Hope Ryan gets this straightened out...and learned a lesson not to try and treat an injury on his own.

Agreed, but even for only 15 days, it’s good to hold on to depth. Ryan isn’t the only starter showing signs of wearing down/hurt/injured. Varland could be up any day now.

I think the front office preferring the rusting hulk of Dallas Kuechel speaks loudly about their opinion of Varland.
