Opening Day Starter is….

Interesting.  I guess in a season where they're largely rolling the dice anyway, may as well start on day 1!

While they have had some luck winning the opener the last couple years, over the last decade it has been a losing affair. Winning game 1 with a youngster would make it pretty sweet over the disappointment of the club ace losing the first game.

Pretty sure it’s not injury, he’s just not up to game speed yet and can’t throw enough pitches to start.

He threw exactly 100 pitches once last year. Zero times over 100. Rocco's kind of guy.

Yes. Per Phil Miller in the Strib, Tom Hall currently has the fewest major league innings pitched of any Twins opening day starter, 29.2, in 1969. When Ryan makes his start he will be doing so with 26.2 major league innings pitched.

Good luck to Joe Ryan, an exciting, "winning pitcher" type with great mound presence.

Wish the Twins had a couple studs in front of him but may this be the first of a dozen Opening Day starts for Ryan. Win Twins!

And per Do-Hyoung Park, “He will become the third pitcher in the Expansion Era (since 1961) to make an Opening Day start within his first six career games, joining José Guzman of the '86 Rangers and Steve Busby of the '73 Royals.”

Hey, the kid hasn’t been around long enough to be anxious about getting the call for opening day.  Give us 5 and a win!

Hall of Famers, neither one.  But if Joe Ryan has an above-average career, as both of these two did, one hardly could be disappointed at this omen.

What are the chances he develops a wipe out slider or change to go with the FB? He'd be a potential ace at that point...

To me people make too big of a deal on opening day starters.  I understand the point is having your top pitcher and we would number our starters in order of talent, but after the first week or two the match ups with teams really get mixed up anyways.  It is rare throughout the season teams will match up their number 1 guy every time.

Yeah I was going to say at least I've heard of both of those guys and I remember Busby was pretty good. Looked him up- two back to back 6 WAR seasons.

I'm looking forward to it ... except I wish he still had the long hair

You're still pining over memories of the glories of Brian Dozier's hair.

April Fool!  That wasn't really Brian Dozier, just some fan in the stands.
