That's got to instantly add at least $10 million dollars to whatever they are offering Darvish right now.  Which would represent 10X my (projected) lifetime earnings.  Because of a finger owwie.  Now THAT hurts.

So does this push him back to making is 2018 debut like early May if we are lucky?  Can't expect him to be ready after 10-12 weeks with no Spring Training.

This also means he will not meet the innings for the option to pick up.

It will be interesting to see whether this is a new injury, or something lingering from last season.

It said in the tweet that it started last season and gave it an injection.

Lemonade:

  • That takes care of the potentially vesting extension.
  • It gives a chance for 2 of Romero/Gonsalves/Littel/Enns/Jorge to show that they belong.

Why not have the surgery right after the postseason game?  This is the same finger he needed injections for, right?

Our horrible rotation just got considerably worse.

I get why they may not have done it immediately but...

December, maybe? Or even early January?

Couldn't an injury like this be tested before spring training prep to see if it is indeed better or not? Waiting until crunch time to give it a go doesn't leave enough time to adequately deal with the injury or find a replacement. That's a bad spot to put your team in.

I think Aaron Slegers is the one that just slid into the lineup.     Considering we are still awash in question marks between Hughes, May, Jorge, Gonsalves, Romero, Enns. Littel (not to mention Mejia and Gibson), I would expect to see a free agent signing as well.

This definitely sucks, but pitchers are always going to be hurting and the depth of the rotation will be annually tested. Thankfully there are plenty of FA starters available and I don't see any way the Twins won't add at least one starter (they've been in heavy pursuit of Darvish, so it's clear they want to add a starter). Just try to get Darvish and if not, go after the tier 2 guys.

Interesting as I believe his option 5th year is tied into innings pitched in 2018.

Yes, it can vest due to 200 IP. Not happening now it seems, but I believe it then turns into a club option so the Twins could still pick it up.

So we're a barley a week from pitchers and catchers reporting and we're already looking at a starting rotation with only 2 definite members for the first month and change of the season. Berrios, Gibson & the offense better be clicking right out of the gate...

Re: the timing of the surgery:

According to multiple sources:  He had that issue in the past and the doctors decided that surgery was not required and gave him an injection (likely cortisone) and had him rest it the post-season.   He just started to pitch last week and until that he was pain-free.  Last week it was determined that surgery will be necessary.

Gibson is in the two spot right now, let that sink in....

Things can change dramatically in the next week or so (fingers crossed,) but you're right, they're putting a ton on pressure on the offense right now.
