At 11:00 this morning (Friday), teams and arbitration players will have to exchange numbers unless they are able to reach an agreement before that deadline.

 

The Twins will have a busy morning as they have seven players to have these discussions with. Please use the comments section below to discuss Twins arbitration news of the day.Earlier in the offseason, the Twins had to make decisions on which players they would offer arbitration to. Players with less than six years of service time, and more than three years (and the top 30% of players with more than two years of service time are Super-2 players) are eligible for salary arbitration.

 

At that time, the team non-tendered RHP Sam Dyson early in the process. They also non-tended CJ Cron, who has since signed with the Tigers. They also agreed to terms with infielder Ehire Adrianza and RHP Matt Wisler.

 

Below are the players that will know a lot more about their 2020 salaries by this afternoon. They will either agree to terms before 11:00 (which is usually what happens), or at that time, the team and the player will make their "bids" for their 2020 salaries. If they are unable to agree to terms before their arbitration date, the two sides will go in front of an arbitration panel and have the 2020 salary determined. This also does not happen often.

 

So let's get to the players. What you will see below is the MLB Trade Rumor projection, and also the Twins Daily projection (found in the Offseason Handbook). When we see that an agreement has been reached, we will also post that under each player's name.

Every one of those figures looks like a bargain when I attach it to my own projection of what each player might produce.

 

This exercise has convinced me that I am officially an optimist. Perhaps unrealistically so.

I look at this and keep thinking extension!  Don't just win or lose at arbitration a player like Berrios or Sano need to be locked up for the future.  All the angst about Rosario this year means he would probably not be granted an extension - except it actually might make him more tradeable.

I just don't know that either would be willing to do it.

 

Sano has always struck me as a guy that wants to be on the east coast, and I think Berrios has so much confidence in himself that he wouldn't sell a couple of years of FA for more up-front money in his arb year.

 

Obviously I could be wrong on both accounts and they'd be willing to work something out.

Or if messiness does occur, the player(s) takes it to heart and prove(s) themself(ves) with dominant season. Think chip on Denard Span's shoulder.

In a civil lawsuit, the party seeking relief is designated   as "The Plaintiff" and the party being sued is designated as "The Defendant". However in a baseball arbitration,I have learned that   the player is designated as "The Arbi" and the owner is designated as "The Trator"?   Show me the money.

I have to say that I have never seen it like this before. Normally these deals come out right at the deadline. I haven't seen anything about the deadline being later than noon (central time)... It's crazy!

I don’t think it is at all uncommon for figures to be exchanged. Hearings don’t start until next month, right? Lots of time to decide what to do on both sides.

Right, but most years, there are a lot of settlements announced between the team and player and they're announced within minutes of the deadline, or before. And then soon after that, the numbers are exchanged and made public.

Or the players highballed it.  Because arbitration is a binary win/lose system, where the arbiter either chooses the team's number, or the player's number, and nothing in between, it is patently NOT in a team's interest to make a lowball offer, as that will make it more likely the arbiter rules for the player, and the team ends up overpaying.  Both sides are attempting to make an offer that is slightly closer to a fair number than the other.

Been there, done that already.  Both of them did not agree to an extension when Kepler and Polanco accepted.
