The 9-25 Miami Marlins have decided to not wait for the Trade Deadline to start selling off assets. A trade is being finalized that will send Luis Arraez to the Padres in exchange for right-handed reliever Woo-Suk Go and three prospects: OFs Dillon Head (Padres No. 6 prospect) and Jakob Marsee (No. 9) and 1B/OF Nathan Martorella (No. 13).

Luis is a great ballplayer and it's pretty clear that lots of teams want a player like him on their roster. When is he a free agent? Hope he can bring in a big contract somewhere, he certainly deserves it.

Guy's 27 years old, a good part of his career is still in front of him. He may up there chasing a few records before it's all said and done.

It's really four prospects, as Go is playing at AA after a brutal spring training (0-2, 12.80 ERA in 6 appearances). Still, it's three other pretty highly ranked prospects. For comparison, the Twins Daily Twins' 6, 9, and 13th ranked prospects are David Festa, Charlee Soto, and Ka'lai Rosario.

If I were him I'd fight that trade with a mad passion. Who in their right mind would want to live in CA and give up half their income in taxes?!

I'm sure Luis can afford a good tax advisor. He doesn't have to establish permanent residence in California. He can maintain permanent residence in Florida, for example (which lots of athletes do), which can be the location for any non-MLB earnings and pay California income taxes for time in that state (81 home games, some days off during the season). I'm not sure how MLB contracts work in terms of payment for Spring Training, but the Padres do spring training in Arizona, which has a fairly low (2.5%) flat income tax. BTW, he will also pay non-resident income taxes in lots of other states where he plays (including Minnesota when the Marlins play the Twins at Target Field in September). Yes, he will pay more in taxes, but he is already paying California taxes when Miami travels to play the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, and Giants. He is paying  high New York income taxes when they travel to play the Mets and Yankees, He is also paying state AND local income taxes when they play at the Cardinals, Giants, Guardians, Orioles, Reds, Royals, Mets, Yankees, etc.

BTW, the California top state income tax rate is 13.3%.

I feel bad for the fans in Miami. They apparently aren't going to attempt to put a quality product on the field.

The Marlins go through these peaks and valleys all the time (granted, lately it is more valleys). That said, they did win World Series in 1997 and 2003.

I'm curious what records you think he is chasing? Granted, he is one of only two players to win batting titles in both the AL and NL, and he was the first player to do that in back-to-back years. Other than that, he only has 688 hits,, so it's unlikely he will even get to 3,000. Ty Cobb won 12 batting titles  (next most was Tony Guinn with 8), so that record's safe. Rogers Hornsby won six consecutive batting titles so that record is probably safe (Arraez is hitting .298 so far this season).

Starting to sell assets in early May is peak Marlins behavior. They just can’t get out of their own way no matter who owns the team.

I knew it was coming, but I did not think it would be this early.

Miami - please send us Luzardo as soon as possible.

Luzardo is on the IL with elbow soreness. Trying it out with his first rehab assignment start on Sunday with his fingers crossed...

Probably a little bittersweet for Arraez. I get the feeling he felt at home in Miami, but San Diego is going to be a great city for him. Outstanding fan attendance, obviously a huge Hispanic population, and a team which is trying to get to a World Series. Arraez will have a lot more protection in the lineup around him so he should see better pitches.

At least I think everybody can agree the Twins have better ownership and a better front office than Miami! hahahahaa

Tell us you don't know how sports economics work, without saying "I don't know how sports economics work."  😀

If it's the new team president taking a clear-eyed view of the franchise's near-term chances, I don't hate the choice if I'm a Marlins fan.  They don't look like a team that will be contending during the remainder of their control over Arraez's tenure there, and they surely won't be able to afford to entice him to stay after that.  Add to that, Arraez's skillset might be among the more polarizing even among analytics-heavy front offices, and the strategy to obtain as much prospect capital while they still can makes sense to me.

Now, about that pitching of theirs.  Thad Levine, get on the phone right now!  (Too bad you already traded Noah Miller for the rotting corpse of Manuel Margot.) (Wait, what happened to Miami's pitching all of a sudden???)

He could win consecutive batting titles with 3 different teams.  A nice little oddity for the history books if it were to happen.

Arraez is a free agent at the end of 2025.

I'm aware of the tax situation in other states as well. But thank you for stating that in case I hadn't been. I should have added this beyond taxes...

  • Food: California is also known for having high food prices, with a grocery items index of 134.50, which is higher than the national average of 100.

  • Utilities: California has relatively low utility bills, with an average monthly bill of $542 kWh, which is lower than the national average of $572 kWh.

Yeah, San Diego is a notoriously awful place.

Once upon a time a dream location. Not so much anymore but I suspect many don't see what's happening to much of southern California, beyond the high cost of living.

Rather than grabbing a few factoids, a more global approach would be to use the BEA's regional price parity statistics. You can find them here: https://www.bea.gov/data/prices-inflation/regional-price-parities-state-and-metro-area

San Diego's regional price parity is 114.511, meaning the cost of all items tracked by the BEA (which are personal consumption expenditures, or PCE)  is 114.511 - it is 14.5 percent more expensive than the U.S. average. Miami is no picnic either - its regional price parity is 111.512 - 11.5 percent higher than the national average. So the difference is about 3 percent - hardly something to get Luis concerned about.

I lived there for a decade and still have a bunch of friends there and visit regularly. It's still a great place. Bloody expensive, but great.

Miami - please send us Luzardo as soon as possible.

Arraez's trade value took a huge dip. Many believe that MIA got the best end of the deal. I personally believe SD did. MIA should have had someone in the top 100 for Arraez. Arraez got 4 hits in his debut w/ SD. Always thought Arraez for SD (resurrection of Tony Gwynn) would be a good idea. SD has a much better line up to help out Arraez. Arraez was well loved in MIA. Feel sorry for the fans.

Since there's fire sale in MIA (much like MN advertized this offseason) so players trade value are down we need to take advantage of the deals. Luzardo is attainable,  sooner the better for MN get into it.

SD has guys who can drive him in. It is a perfect spot for a contact get on base guy.

I can't believe they went for ok quantity over less players with higher quality..... Not a good trade.
