Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 Source: http://www.1500espn.com/twins-2/2018/04/twins-option-ryan-lamarre-minors-keep-roster-spot-open-now/ LaMarre will be headed to AAA and the Twins haven't decided who will be coming up. They might not play a game this weekend, so they may not need a pitcher, but I would assume Phil Hughes will be up as the 5th starter eventually. It seems they want to keep the 8 man bullpen together.
TheLeviathan Old-Timey Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 I predict Hughes lucks his way through a start or two and engenders enough confidence that we are forced to endure a half dozen train wrecks before we finally see him cut.
twinsfanstreif Provisional Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 This seems like an odd move with the game being delayed today, I wonder if a different move than we all think is coming, seems like it might be hard to move forward with a 3 man bench

Yup, we sign FA and pay big bucks to win games, and then we pay Hughes big bucks to lose them. Something is definitely amiss!
KirbyDome89 Verified Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 They aren't playing tonight or tomorrow and Sunday looks doubtful so I'm not sure why the move is being made right now. I'm not particularly a LaMarre believer but Kinley is the guy that needs to go. A wasted 25 man spot is a big deal, especially if they're going to carry 13 pitchers and leave the bench shorthanded.

Not sure if this happens often in baseball, with no salary cap, but you see it often in the NHL, as the cap is calculated daily.
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 Already basically not using two pitchers. Let’s bring up another! Brilliant!! I’m sorry, but this is poor roster management. Falvine: this statement is directed at you.
beckmt Verified Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 I prefer Mejia to HughesAnd I prefer Romero to both of the above.
beckmt Verified Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 Expect if the Twins play Sunday it will be two games, so they are probably planning to bring up a pitcher or two. It still could be something we do not know, so this discussion may be moot.

There hasn't been much reason to rag on Falvine thus far and I've muted my own criticism and giving great latitude towards benefit of the doubt. But this move particularly is definitely Terry/Gardy level head-scratchingly-worthy.
nater79a Verified Member Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 Why do I get the feeling they are going to make a 40-man roster move and add Kennys Vargas? Because, you know...Puerto Rico. I would be so ticked.
jud6312 Verified Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Honestly, I assumed the only move we'd hear about today was a Hildenberger demotion.
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 My guess? This was the move to clear a spot for a SP if they had needed one. Granite would/will be recalled since LaMarre can't be for what, 10 days barring an injury replacement?
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 FWIW the Twins can clear a 40-man spot by moving E. Santana to the 60 day DL retroactively, so the Vargas playing at home hypothesis still can be in play. Not sure why they would need yet another pitcher when they will not be playing due to weather and travel for a while...
mikelink45 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 I prefer Mejia to HughesI prefer Romero to any one else
Danchat Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Author Posted April 14, 2018 The more I think about this move, the less it makes sense. The Twins probably aren't going to play until Tuesday in Puerto Rico with the current weather. I don't see why LaMarre needed to go down to AAA when our next game is probably happening in 4 days?
yarnivek1972 Verified Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 So, one game Sunday, off day, two games in Puerto Rico and then another day off. 13 pitchers are needed? Really? Really????
Intramural Legend Verified Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 It was done today to start Ryan's clock to come back. They can bring 26 guys to Puerto Rico, so by moving him today, he'll only miss the Tampa series
DocBauer Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 So, one game Sunday, off day, two games in Puerto Rico and then another day off. 13 pitchers are needed?Really?Really????Don't need the 5th SP now. They will bring up a position player even if it's short term. Granite I say, but could be Vargas on a temporary move, but I kind of doubt it, even with the PR trip.
Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Well, he was only hitting .500 with an ops of 1.000 Expected better from him.
Rosterman Verified Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Adding Vargas back on the 40-man. Strange move, because he would probably be the first to go if and when the Twins would add back Santana (assuming they could/wuld 650-day him) and May. Hughes is the elephant in the room. They don';t want to eat his salary. They NEED to give him a start or two before cutting him, if they choose to do so (which is sad). But going to P.R., they probably need an additional bat more than an extra bullpen spot. That Kinley hasn't been used is beyond me. This is a waste on a team that is contending, and also playing weak offense overall. It makes no sense. They had to know game conditions before making this move, and considering that a secondary move hasn't happened. If they truly wanted a different arm for the bullpen, they could send out Hildenberger or Moya, both of whom would get more pitching time in the minors next week, perhaps, than in the majors...and add back Duffey and even bring up Enns and let him pitch blowouts just to see what they got and if they want it. And if it is salary, I probably would've kept LaMarre and Granite over Grossman.

Anyone who has seen a weather forecast this week should have hada pretty good idea that Friday and Saturday were going to be postponed. Sunday is far from guaranteed as well.

Intramural Legend Verified Member Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Why can they bring 26 guys to PR?Apparently games played outside the US allows an extra position player. Doing it this way allows them to add an extra pitchers the 25th person, and then Ryan as the 26th. He is lot exempt from the 10 day rule after the get back to the US, so will miss the TB series
