Monkeypaws Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Just heard the news - kinda liked the folksy cult element of it. Oh well. Corporate must not like it. Gotta say, I was worried Bert had gone down the Keillor Franken Gilliam route, so relieved to see it wasn't that.
darin617 Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Makes sense to drop the "circle me Bert" when Bert will barely be doing that many games again this season. Once he became a Hall of Famer his broadcast time his dropped every year.

sampleSizeOfOne Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Only one thing left to do.... "A riot is an ugly thing..." But what would they do if everyone started showing up with Circle me Bert paraphanalia: homer hankies or beach towels perhaps? Even hats? And just to be different, i'd be the only one with an Ernie shirt...
GP830 Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Bummer. I like when organizations have traditions and character. This is something that was a specific to Twins baseball. Corporate sponsorship or not.
dave_dw Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I never got to make the "Circumscribe Me, Bert" sign that I always dreamed of having...smh
Doubles Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Sweet, this should allow Bert time to give us more useless nuggets straight out of the Twins media guide. And if this means the winds of broadcast change are blowing in the direction of Smalley, Morneau, LaTroy, et al, then all the better.
Badsmerf Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I always liked the circle me Bert signs. It was fun to see the people from all over. Gave a sense of community with other fans. I'll miss it.
ashbury Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I'd like to see the internal marketing study that indicated why the feature had become harmful.
Post-Concussive Blues Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 What was wrong with it? It was nice to see different families from around Twins Territory get briefly interviewed.
Thrylos Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 This is a non-story, other than the hurt Burt's ego. It did not go away. Burt's name went away. It is relaunched as "the winner's circle" and will expand to involve TV viewers as well... Here
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I'd like to see the internal marketing study that indicated why the feature had become harmful. Yeah, weird. I'm not crying over it but it seemed like the kind of shtick that would last until Bert was done or made headlines for the wrong reasons. They do realize "The Winners Circle" isn't a relevant baseball term don't they? Was this a reused promotion from Canterbury Downs or something?
Loosey Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I would like to apologize to all for the "Circle Me Bert" phenomenon. In May of 2001 a bunch of college buddies and I drove from Mankato to Mpls for a Twins Game against the Orioles. We thought it would be funny to make a "Bert Blyeleven" fan club sign. We thought maybe our sign would get us on TV for a minute. Instead we got interviewed by Anthony LaPanta and possibly created the Circle me Bert thing. Alcohol was involved. . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Agv9imHxJms&app=desktop
woolywoolhouse Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 If they're discontinuing it just because Bert is only doing half of the games, couldn't they switch it to his full-time broadcast partner? "Circle Me Dick" signs at Target Field all year!
theJemmer Provisional Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Gosh I hope this doesn't portend the endd of those WONDERFUL, HILARIOUS Grand Casino commercials that we see 8,000,000 times a season.

USAFChief Twins Daily Contributor Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Wow...of the many Bert things I've sort of grown tired of over the years, I still LOVED the Circle Me Bert schtick. I'll miss it. And now there's one thing for sure on my bucket list that won't get checked off.
Doomtints Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 I would imagine this is simply because he's not calling as many games as he used to.

Doubles Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Look, I'm just not a fan of Bert's 'broadcasting' style. The guy had a long playing career, & undoubtedly has a wealth of knowledge, but he'd rather play to this gregarious, fun-loving goofball character he has cultivated. Those of you who don't know would be flabbergasted to learn how much of a pig the guy can be. Bert's all about shock value. I get that Bert has his fans- many of them, in fact- but I'm ready to move on from 'California math,' 'the best athlete on the field,' and the countdown to Bert's birthday. The whole 'D & B' broadcast team has gotten remarkably stale and I'm ready for something different.

ashbury Verified Member Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 "Circle me Bert no more" sounds like the start to one of Charles Dickens failed attempts at sonnet writing.
