Ex-Twins in the Box Scores

They didn’t have enough patience with either young player.

The catcher was terrible in the minors for two years here. What should they have fun differently?

They traded the outfielder for a guy they thought could be a starting catcher. What did they do wrong, in terms of patience? They didn't cut him, they traded him for something they thought was valuable.

It seems to me they thought Murphy might have turned a corner--IIRC he had a monster series against the Twins at one point.  Or maybe it was a game.  Or maybe it was just one at bat.  Regardless, they cashed in their Hicks chip and took a chance.

For every phenom that hits right out of the gates at 20 years old, there are 10 or 20 that don't figure it out until later...and probably 50 that never do.

One at-bat. 1-for-7 versus the Twins, but the one hit was a 3-run, 9th inning, tie-breaking homer off Glen Perkins in July 2015.

I think with every trade it was a step down in talent. If you want to develop young players it is going to take a lot of patience. They didn’t see how either player’s bat would play in their primes.

Hicks had good defensive numbers and a good bat against lefties. They should have utilized those skills longer. Murphy had great framing numbers while with the Twins. They should have utilized him for his defense knowing that as a young player the bat will get better.

They both would help a team defensively that it would be worth seeing how their bat would play in their primes.

I take Murphy to be a case we will see more of - the dudeeveryone gives up on until they just happen to find the right person to modify their approach with analytics and the player completely transforms their game out of nowhere. Maybe it’s perception, but that seems to be more common today than it has been the last 20 years of baseball.

Now we need that right person to work for Minnesota... It would be nice to transform a player for the better here.

Murphy’s defense is better. I am surprised by his bat but even without it guys like Drew Butera have had long careers.

Murphy's "bat" so far has been a brief power spike. Still very poor components underneath. If he settles in as a 64 OPS+ hitter like Herrmann's career mark, I guess he can stick around as a backup catcher somewhere but he doesn't feel like an asset or a source of regret.

I guess not everyone gave up on them first, but we transformed Dozier and Escobar beyond what folks commonly expected. Adrianza is a modest win so far. Grossman for a season with the bat...

Rosario also seems, in a small sample, to have dramatically improved.

I suspect there is a comment on a White Sox blog somewhere about how the Sox were foolish to give up on Eduardo Escobar for a return of 56.2 innings of Francisco Liriano posting a 5.4 ERA.

In baseball, almost nothing is certain.

Perhaps it's Minnesota paranoia about no one wanting to be here, but Murphy never looked to thrilled when he was up with the Twins.

I probably read too much into it, but to me he seemed to gave off a "I was a Yankee and now I have to be a Twin?" vibe.

It's paranoia. Pierzynski did the same thing with the Giants and he was playing in one of the best markets in baseball. There were complaints about him watching Twins games after the trade.

It's natural. You come up with an org, you learn its ways, you become part of the system. When you leave - especially as a person in their mid-20s after spending your entire professional life with one organization - it's going to sting a bit. Maybe you reject them entirely, maybe you only wish you were back at your "home".

Old friend Danny Santana is back on the 25 man roster for Atlanta.

Yeah, he finally got called up and went 2 for 3 in his season debut yesterday! Other than Rosario and Escobar, How many guys in our current starting lineup have had 2 hits in a game this month?

Our old friend Danny Valencia is certainly an upgrade over Morrison. He can also play 3B. Escobar can move to SS. A baby step to get more offense!

Yeah, thid baseman who got away: Danny Valencia, Yangervis Solarte and Niko Goodrum. If any of these guys were available, it wouldn't surprise me that the Twins would resign ... Trevor Plouffe instead.

Not until Ron Coomer had a week or two of at-bats though.

and I don't blame them 1 bit for letting any of them go.....

Starting again for the Giants yesterday: Dereck Rodriguez. He pitched 6.1 scoreless innings and got the win, his third one since he got called up. He also struck out 5 batters and walked 2. Can't say I saw this coming, and I guess the Twins front office didn't either. Nevertheless, another ex-Twins player having success elsewhere.

He might be a middle of rotation pitcher that people complain about for a long time

Interesting point for the stat line scouts. They mentioned his high HR/9 rate and state that there are HR he gives up would be outs at the major league level.

In the case of Solarte... They should be blamed. They chose a 31 year old Sean Burroughs over a 23 year old Solarte.

I'm not blaming them going with the wrong guy... I think that happens from time to time but I also want to make it known that they clearly went with the wrong guy.

Solarte was a minor league free agent because he was not placed on the 40 man roster. Burrows was signed as a minor league free agent much later than that. You can say that they chose Pedro Florimon, jeff Gray, Jason Marquis, Terry Doyle,  or Ryan Doumit and for the most part be right in saying  they made a poor choice. The FO thought they could sign him but he went elsewhere.  Then again, it still took 2 more years in the minors for him to develop. as he was unable to beat out the likes of Alberto Gomez or Roberto Chinnios.

Alright... those are fine selections. I’ll switch to one of them.

Who the hell is Terry Doyle?  I had to google him to make sure he was a real person.....

Not one of Ryan's better Rule V pickups.
