Ex-Twins in the Box Scores

Went to the Dodger game tonight... Kershaw on the mound, and a chance to see a couple former Twins, Dozier and Chargois. Dozier now 5/9, 2 dingers, 2 doubles, 4 runs, 5 RBI,13 total bases. OPwhat? No walks. What's that all about? This night....a 3 run homer and a double and 4 RBI. And the 3 run homer was off a pitcher, and not one of the 2 position players the Brewers surrendered with. 21-5. Dozier is enjoying the new clubhouse.

Surprised the Cubs are still sticking with ex-Twin Brian Duensing - and his 7.24 ERA. (Only a 6.22 FIP, though :) )

Yeah, I noticed that Duensing got hammered again in yesterday's game, seeing his ERA rise even higher. Hmm.... might we interest the Cubs in Fernando Rodney at this point?

Over on the south side of Chicago, Palka struck a pinch hit homer for the Chisox yesterday, his 16th of the year. to go with 42 RBI/ But ... he's batting a meager .242 with a .288 OBP. Nice to see him show some power, but I don't really regret the Twins losing him. Then again, he's certainly outperformed Morrison this year.

I bet there's at least 1 person on Cubs Daily that thinks Theo is incompetent for leaving Duensing on their roster!

Yup. Palka has a 112 wRC+ to Morrison's 80. Assuming we didn't play him in the outfield like the White Sox have done (where he has negated much of his batting performance), Palka would be 1 WAR or so ahead of Morrison so far this year.

Only if we get Duensing in return. We can't lose that much veteran presence and not replace it.

Keep in mind the White Sox were the opponent...

Lance Lynn pitches the best game of his season.

7 IP - 2 H - 0 R - 9 K - 1 BB

Worth a follow the rest of the season to see if he remembers how to pitch after leaving the Twins.

Dereck Rodriguez with another nice outing, and against the Houston Astros no less.

7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K - left with his team leading 1-0.

Rodriguez has allowed three or fewer runs in 10 of his starts. On the year, he is 5-1 in 13 games (11 starts) with a 2.34 ERA. Over 73 innings, he has a 7.52 K/9 and a 3.39 K/BB ratio (61/18).

Shocking. Makes me want to strangle the guy.

It makes me want to strangle the doubters. Expecting him to be any different than what he's shown over the last 5 years is the problem.

I don't think that was his point.

I think his point is that it would have been nice to see this production from Dozier earlier in the year, when the postseason was still a reasonable goal.

Instead he waited until it was too late to make any difference for the Twins.

And my point is Dozier does this every year for the last 5 years. Expecting him to be anything different is the problem. It's not like Dozier wasn't trying to produce in the beginning of the season. It didn't work out. Now, like clockwork, he's back to killing the ball the same time of year he always does.

He wasn’t the only one with disappointing numbers, so why single him out? At least he showed up for work every day.

Perhaps if the front office had shown some faith, and helped this team, rather than torpedoing it when they were five games under, he still could be making a difference for the Twins.

Dozier's extreme unpredictability probably had plenty of impact on the Twins extreme unpredictability. Good teams don't fluctuate between being competitive and being a laughing stock every month, every year. Sure, I'd take Dozier now but if this team wants sustained success it's got to find more regularly reliable players even if it comes at the expense of having a player perform at superstar level for two months. Reliance on Dozier in part contributed to the Twins being out of contention in June.

I agree with your first paragraph. His peaks and valleys are wider than other players. You can't have too many slow starters on the team. Otherwise they will be laughing stocks.

In general, unless the reliably consistent player is a star, I'll take the streaks of greatness and failures.

In regards to Dozier, 5 years of data should make it easier to forecast his performance. The manager sets the lineup and is certainly capable of making adjustments based on that.

The Twins relied on a large number of slow starters and it blew up in their face this year. They also relied on Buxton and Sano turning into stars, Kepler taking the next step, and many other factors we've discussed on dozens of threads.

If I had confidence that Molitor would bat a guy like Dozier 7th or 8th until he perks up, I'd have more confidence rolling with extreme players.

Though not having confidence in Molitor tends to be the root issue with most of my Twins criticisms.

Haven't the Twins tried to move him around in the batting order and he has responded poorly to it?  (In terms of attitude)

His unpredictability became kind of predictable.  :)

If Dozier comes back to Target Field with a new contract... I would welcome him back, with the following condition. A different manager managing him.

I will not be able to stomach the same riding the three month slump until he stops slumping game plan in 2019.

Same goes for Sano and Buxton and Kepler.

Morrison I simply don't want back.

I've heard rumors but no way of knowing.

Regardless.

Tough.

Hit the Ball

Let the bat be the form of influence.

Moderator warning: the purpose of this thread is to track past Twins, not to continue dissecting the Dozier trade. If you want to update where he’s at from time to time, fine, as well as the others who were traded recently or long ago. Do not make this a Dozier centric or a ‘we should/shouldn’t have sold’ thread or posts will be removed. It’s obviously a subject still wanting and needing to be talked about, so start a thread or find one of the other threads already in existence, but don’t continue this debate here.

Not in the box scores, exactly, but ex-Twin Ben Revere was cut loose by the Angels organization after accomplishing not very much, in the PCL exclusively this season, at age 30. MLBTR positions him as a possible acquisition for a contender, but it would have to be a pretty specialized roster vacancy IMO.

Speed and defense guys are being replaced out of the game by speed and defense guys who also have power.
