Ex-Twins in the Box Scores

So many times you lose a player because of the numbers game and you think you might be able to senak them off the roster (see Kennys Vargas...claimed but you snuck him back with another claim). It is having the spaces.

What would the Twins 2018 be like with Bartolo Colon and Anibel Sanchez pitching instead of Lance Lynn and whatever?

Catchers can have a long life. Right now, the Twins could use a solid journeyman (i.e. not Bobby Wilson). But, yes, Murphy was traded for Hicks and the Twins threw him out there and he bombed, like many guys do, and they tried to keep him but needed the 40-man spot, and they lsot him.

Numbers game. Win some, lose some.

Not a fair swap, but at least they have Moya. I'd rather have Hicks or Murphy, but Moya could be a pretty good get.

Kudos to the Dodger's Brian Dozier who hit game winning sac fly in the bottom of the 12th to beat the Giants 4-3. He also had a double and 2 walks a day after being removed from a game for an irregular heart beat. I guess it was sinus medication being bad; he's ok. Rock on man!

He has settled into the Dozier that was traded. Now hitting .218 for August and the Dodgers. After the first two games high, he has been the streaky slumping hitter he was all year. He is getting a bunch of walks. Good in the field and good getting on base for LA, though.

It took Charlie Steiner (play by play on radio for the Dodgers) until the middle of August to stop pronouncing Chargois' name wrong, and David Vessegh, who does the after game talk type show, Dodger Talk and Clubhouse something, still is using the R. shar-gwah, with the accent on the gwah, is how they called it all year, even after I called in 2 times at the beginning of the year and tried to help them.... Shag-wah. Stiener still likes to put the accent on the gwah, though. Kind of embarrassing. Vessegh is just not paying attention.

Dozier failed  as a pinch hitter last night. Aaron Hicks had an 0fer, as did Palka, and LaMarre.  John Ryan Murphy had an 0fer.  The night was not a total waste for ex-Twins, Eduardo Escobar got a hit as did Eduardo Nunez, Suzuki got 2 hits.  Nobody can criticize  the play of on the field of Drew Butera. last night.  They can criticize me for including him because his name was not in the box.

A soon to be ex-Twin was 1 for 3 with a walk.

You realize those percentages are 51% and 46% right?

One is normal and the other is an egregious act worthy of tarring and feathering our manager.  I....just...what?

That's what I was thinking. Looks like Houston is still using him a ton. I wonder if the pitch count is down .... significantly, that is.....

Has anyone considered the possibility of our games pitched stat being inflated because none of our bullpen guys spent any time on the DL.

Even when we had Pressly, Reed, and Hildenberger near the top of the list. Rogers and Duke were not far behind.

I think it's quite possibly a combination of:

1. We just didn't have any guys spend time on the DL when other teams did.

2. Molitor spent a couple of months trying to hide Kinley and Hughes and the rookies which left him with a 6 man bullpen.

Just wanted to do a summary of the Twins who have been traded away up to this point:

Dozier: .232/.366/.415 (.781 OPS)

Escobar: .289/.343/.500 (.843 OPS)

Lynn: 26 IP, 3.81 ERA / 2.04 FIP, 1.346 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9 & 11.4 K/9

Duke: 6.2 IP, 8.10 ERA / 6.45 FIP, 1.8 WHIP, 5.4 BB/9 & 4.1 K/9

Pressly: 10.2 IP, 1.69 ERA / 2.03 FIP, 0.56 WHIP, 0 BB/9 & 11.8 K/9

Rodney: 8 IP, 0.00 ERA / 2.53 FIP, 0.750 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9 & 7.9 K/9

Dozier's hitting just .192 in the last 15 games with 0 HRs, so he's still the same streaky guy he was here. Duke looks pretty bad in the SSS and Pressly, Rodney, and Lynn are all doing well.

AZ has three pitchers in the top 10.  SFG also.  And the new wave Astros are using Pressley in much the same way.

Maybe we shouldn't let perception bias do all the talking and consider that this is how baseball is played now.

Escobar and Dozier were fan favorites, I almost expected that from Lynn, I mean he wasn't too terrible after the first month and half for the twins either. But I totally feel that the Pressly trade was the worst trade the Twins made this off-season. I fully believe if they still had him he'd be the closer right now. I feel that the place where the twins need to upgrade the most is in the bullpen so they can turn games into 5 or 6 inning games. The best teams out there are able to do that.

MODERATOR NOTE:

This is what this thread is about not pointing fingers of blame at our current manager. If you want to do that there are several threads out there for that. So let’s please keep to topic if we can.

Just want to say that I am SO happy for Hicks!  He did really well in about half a season's work last year and has continued it on this year.

I always predicted he would become good/great if he shaved his head: Puckett and Hunter set the trend for for Twins centerfielders.

Buxton should shave his head if he wants to be great.

Oh and Hicks is a scratch golfer.

Rich Becker says this theory is bogus! :)

Indeed, Hicks looks solid this year. Seems like once a week or so I see him featured on the ESPN highlights knocking in the game winning run or hitting another homer. Sigh.

From USAToday:  Stephen Souza was explaining (making excuses?) for the D-Backs recent offensive slump, and he described the murderer's row of pitchers they'd faced recently:

“We just faced Madison Bumgarner,” he said, cutting off a reporter. “We faced Clayton Kershaw. We faced Rich Hill. We faced (Dereck) Rodriguez. This isn’t a rough stretch; these are good pitchers.

Gulp.  Heady company. [insert comment about Falvine's pitching expertise here.]

[insert name of player kept/added to the 40 man roster instead of re-signing DRod.] is was a bum.

That was interesting analysis, thanks.  Extending his Yankee career through 9/2 brings his ERA up to 5.09, but his FIP drops to 1.88.  Somehow 6 ER on 9 H, 1 BB in 3.2 brought his FIP down.  I'm going to try that argument on my boss- yeah, it looks like I sucked, but I actually have a great FIP.

6 strikeouts in 8 outs are great for fip   In fip theory Lynn is a better pitcher than what has happened, otherwise known as unlucky.  People who believe in BABIP would say that Lynn is unlucky with a BABIP at .375  Is Chris Archer just unlucky this year?  At the end of the game the team that gave up the least runs wins, The great fip is nice, winning gets money

More homers yesterday in the Tigers-White Sox game. Goodrum hit his 16th for Detroit, while Palka smacked his 21st for the ChiSox,. The power is impressive, but both guys are only batting around .235.

Worth remembering that the league batting average has dropped again, to .252 for non-pitchers -- down 7 points from last year, and at its lowest levels since 1972/1968. (As recently as 2007 it was still .272, 20 points higher than the current mark.)

So Goodrum and Palka are still below average in that mark, but not by that much. Fangraphs pegs them both as roughly league average hitters overall (98 and 102 wRC+, respectively).

I think this is good perspective.  I wouldn't mind having Goodrum as a utility infielder with some pop.  Palka on the other hand...guys that can only play corner outfield...poorly...are below average on the bases...and wRC+ at a 102 clip are not rare or particularly valuable.  Not that both aren't young enough, new enough to MLB pitching, to still get better.
