What are the Rays doing? Trading for Cron, then waiving Dickerson and trading Ordorizzi for Jermaine Palacios? Is Palacios even a top 20 guy (he was like two years ago, right)?

The Rays just got FLEECED!!!! Wow! Our #20 Prospect (Top 25 on most lists) for a SOLID #2 SP. Great work to the Twins' front office! Just wow!

Odorizzi hasn't been a #2 SP since 2015. He was barely a # 5 last year. The guy's BB rate and HR rates skyrocketed. He had a .227 BABIP last year and that was with a pretty below average batted ball profile. No way that continues. People thinking he is anything more than a back of the rotation piece are fooling themselves. There is a reason they only got Palacios back.

What I remember when watching Odorizzi... Very quiet delivery... doesn't even look like he's trying.

He was always more effective at the top of the zone. He'd throw some high cheese around 90 at the letters and batters couldn't seem to catch up with it. He's also got a nice little change that has a little drop at the end of it. Don't remember seeing many breaking pitches but I'll get a chance to watch him more.

He's a good average MLB Pitcher that we didn't pay a ton for.

Hat tipped to the front office.

I still wanted Darvish tho

Trying to interpret FanGraphs, he struggled with fastball control last year, but threw the slider more effectively than ever.  So either the fastball control comes back and yay, or he becomes a junkballer and meh.

But for Palacios, it's hard to imagine this being a big loss for the Twins.

The team has used some very high draft picks for position players even when the team's perceived need has been pitching. The argument in favor of this has been better certainty. If that's your strategy, at some point you have to turn some of the hitting pipeline* into pitching. This is a good use.

* Of course Palacios wasn't acquired via the draft. But Royce Lewis makes Palacios expendable, or at least that is the most direct line I want to try to draw.

Dickerson DFAd?  Trade incoming?  Archer/Dickerson for Kepler/Gordon/Gonsalves?

Why? He has been solid since he entered the league, he is a 3/4 imo.

Great trade though.

He was great in 2014-2015, decent in 2016 and terrible last year. Unless someone can give me a reason he was awful last year that won't make him awful this year . . .

I guess Sanchez isn't taking a roster spot, as of now? Has anyone been cleared for him?

I'm not sure how that one works ... it's not a guaranteed contract, so maybe he doesn't take a roster spot until he makes the team? Someone else will have to clarify that for me.

I'm wondering if Santana will join Pineda on the 60 day to make room for all these starting pitchers

I don't believe Santana will be out long enough to be placed on the 60-dqy.

Fantastic.  Have to wonder if TB preferred Palacios over Gordon?  Not that far from the big leagues and could turn into one hell of a player.

Got a question, Seth.  Who do you prefer, a healthy Arraez or Palacios?  Both great young hitters, is Palacios better defensively and more likely to stick at short?

Sure makes one feel good that they got a good starting pitcher without giving up Kepler, Romero and Gonsalves.  Yahooooooo!

Good trade Falvine! Good luck Jermaine Palacios! \m/

I'm not sure the Sanchez signing has become "official" yet - pending physical and what not. Until that's all done, it likely doesn't require a spot be opened.

My guess would be May when the time comes.

Pretty sure Sanchez signed a minor league contract. No need to clear space unless he makes the team out of ST.

I'm plenty pleased with the trade. Solid pitcher. Palacios seems light but maybe the Rays see something others don't. He should feel good about the move. Traded straight up from a half-season in A+ for a major leaguer.

Gotta wonder if somehow Dickerson will surface with the Twins.  Maybe part of the original discussion but now trying to get him for less money than what it would have been in a trade.  Don't hold your breath on any additional pitching moves. I think they will feel comfortable with finding their staff in Santana, Berrios, Odorizzi, Gibson, Mejia, Hughes, May, Duffy, Gonsalves, Romero, Slegers.  I'm happy, but I always am when spring training starts.

There were reports that he had a guaranteed roster spot, and our board spent a lot hangwringing over the loss of that spot...but I guess not.

Rays seem to have been under orders to cut payroll.  That is what seems to be happening with the latest 2 trades.  Palacios seems to be able to hit, and fits the Rays timeline, so maybe the Rays saw something there.  Rays will tread water until new stadium gets approved  and  built.

Sub 2 ERA in his last 6 games in 2017.  Back issues early in the year.  No hit the Twins through 6 in September.

His splits are pretty favorable; he did much better in the second half (dynamite in Sept.), and on the road.

Is Ordozzi a flyball or groundball guy? Maybe Buxton can help if the former.  (Edit: his flyball rate rose precipitously last season, and the groundball rate dropped even more so. I don't know league averages, so I lack context to answer my own question)
