So it might cost Park.  Interesting move.

That appears to be the case.  Park was DFA'd to make room for Belisle.

Have the new owners given up on Park that quickly? Is his wrist more damaged than expected? Are they making room for a Morneau/Napoli signing to follow? Or just really, really hoping he clears waivers to the minors?

Park was DFAd? The Korean DH who can mash the ball?

Uh, what?

methinks that this opens the door for a Mike Napoli/Chris Carter signing...

Right, so our strongest potential platoon partner for Mauer against LHP is gone? Does this mean he will hit waivers and then report to AAA?

If no one claims him. Which I'd put at about 60% likely no one does.

And, I agree, they now have room to sign an old, veteran, DH also. Classic move of preferring veterans over the unknown. Really not a fan of a rebuilding team doing this at all.

Dunno. Park is kinda old himself with no proven track record.

If they had released Vargas and kept Park, I'd be far more upset.

I'll wait until I see what they do, if anything, regarding the DH but I fear that you are correct.  Not a fan if that will be the case.

Wow. Not a fan of losing Park, but considering how difficult Chris Carter and Mike Napoli are finding the market, I'd guess Park clears waivers.

I don't like the move really, but I DO like the implication; that being the new guys don't care much of the old guys' evaluations and they aren't going to worry about eating a contract of someone who may not fit their system.

Is Park a better Mauer platoon counterpart than Vargas? I really don't know.

I don't either. Park passes the eye test as a more seasoned performer to me. Vargas is a true DH in my eyes in that he's a switch hitter, and Park profiles as a RH platoon with Joe, so I see significant value to him there. Also, his defense is better than Vargas at first.

It's still unkown versus unproven, but Park still feels like an asset to me. I hope he ends up in AAA, and back in MN by mid summer if he's mashing.

How does Danny Santana survive over Park?

Seems bizarre to me. Perhaps because all teams would at least take a look at a guy who owns both a CF and SS glove while hardly any teams care to look at an unproven DH.

I still would have DFA'd Santana though.

I know this could fit under the forum thread for the Matt Belisle signing, but I thought it might be big enough of a topic for it's own.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Belisle, the Twins DFAd Byungho Park. Signed just over a year ago after putting up video-game numbers the last 4-5 years in Korea, Park's 2016 showed some promise, he hit a bunch of home runs, but he struck out even more and he got hurt.

I am a bit surprised, but when you consider the free agent market for power hitters this offseason, it's likely he clears waivers and the Twins can outright him to AAA. Of course, he may be willing to work out a buy out and return to Korea as well.

This may also open up the possibility of the Twins signing a DH, like Napoli, etc.

I personally have mixed thoughts on this. I would have liked to see what he could do if healthy. Maybe it wouldn't have been great and this would have been the result later, but we shall see.

He's younger than anyone they sign, which I'd lay odds of 80% happens now.

Nice to see the Twins making some moves!

I highly doubt that any team will pick him up. Minors or go home are my thoughts.

He should clear waivers, so it's basically like having a 41 man roster at this point. They'll just have to find someone to drop or DL to add him back when the season starts, or when they recall him if they give him some AAA time.

Since there is a new thread, which I agree with, btw.....

I'd give the FO an F on signing a 36 YO RP, and DFAing a 29 year old 1B/DH. Also, keeping Dan San so far....he can neither hit nor field nor steal bases? Uh, wut?

True, but you're getting something approaching a guaranteed performance level from Napoli or Carter.

And, again, they're the types of players you can flip at the deadline. You won't get much for them but they'll be worth something.

We spent an entire season talking about how badly this roster is constructed. I'm not going to cry if some of the marginal guys are given the boot.

You can flip a DH only type at the deadline? Has that happened lately?

And, if Park is good, can't you flip him at the deadline?

And, we care about "guaranteed" performance in a rebuilding year more than finding out what Park can do, or Vargas (if they sign someone)?
