Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Well, are you are sure he's better than what they had? Are you sure they could not have DFAd Dan San, or another RP that won't now make the roster? This is it for me. I just think there were others that were ahead of him on the dfa list. If at the end of ST you don't think it's going to work, then dfa him ... but now? It's weird timing, imo. Perhaps there is something going on we don't know. My 'worry' is they have done this to sign Morneau. I love Morneau, but ... or maybe they believe in Vargas that much? Or Palka? It's just a very surprising move. And I wish I knew more.
Mike Sixel Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 If anything, it tells me this new regime understands sunk costs. Not that I agree or disagree with the move, I'm actually indifferent, but the old FO would hold on to someone way too long because they spend $12M on them 15 months earlier. The new guys understand that money is gone, and holding on to an asset that has no current value (to them) makes no sense. great post....
mudcat14 Verified Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I would bet the house that a Mike Napoli signing is imminent. Falvey specifically spoke of wanting veteran for his cluhouse leadership, and Napoli is reportedly an outstanding teammate. Falvey and Levine are both quite familiar with him from their previous gigs. I suppose he could split 1B/DH duties with Mauer/Vargas/Grossman. I'm not endorsing the move, just predicting it. I think he has way to many non-productive AB's, but does have a ton of post-season experience from playing on winning teams.
drjim Provisional Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Zonk10:31 Didn't Fangraphs post an article entitled "Don't give up on Byong Ho Park". So then what do the Twins do? Exactly that. Jeff Sullivan10:31 They must really not think he'll get over his injuriesThe more I read Fangraphs writers the less impressed I am. I suspect the smart ones get poached by teams and the entertaining ones stay at the site.
Sarah Verified Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 One of the comments on the Star Tribune article was "Who was the Twins director of Asian scouting - Helen Keller?" I had to chuckle at that one, sometimes you just have to laugh...

But, hey, judge away. Also, judging anyone on a chat reply? Odd....
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I do think this move increases the chances of lots of Sano at DH and lots of Polanco at 3b.This would be an interesting development.... Could come true if another SS is signed or traded for.

But I'm not sure I'd have signed him here. We'll see. If they do, hope he has the beard back.

diehardtwinsfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 How much longer are we going to keep saying that? I know that I've been saying it for at least a year, so I'm sure that there are others that have been for longer. It's almost like a running gag anymore. I say we give him the Duensing treatment.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I do think this move increases the chances of lots of Sano at DH and lots of Polanco at 3b.I hadn't thought of that ... but it seems they are committed to not making Sano primarily a DH at this stage in his career. But, maybe they are trying to give themselves some flexibility to see who gels where. Dunno.
Squirrel Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 fwiw, Cameron tweeted that the WS don't even have a DH on the roster....Well, crap Mike ... quit saying stuff that might come true. If this does, I am blaming you for the entire season for everything!

But, maybe they are trying to give themselves some flexibility to see who gels where. Dunno. I probably shouldn't have said "lots" and more thought of it as keeping options open to move players around the diamond. Which is also the reason they aren't in a hurry to get rid of Santana. Guys like Park are dinosaurs, especially when they "produce" an 80 wRC+.
drjim Provisional Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Seriously? Jeff has said repeatedly he doesn't want a FO job, because he likes his lifestyle. But, hey, judge away. Also, judging anyone on a chat reply? Odd.... Well, if you quote chat responses like they have some authority, stands to reason there might be a critique. They are talented writers and entertaining in their chats, but they mostly just repeat narratives. Not that I blame them, hard to have great knowledge of all 30 teams.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 edit: Dave Cameron has convinced me, he won't be a Twin at $3MM a year....someone will claim him. He had me convinced for a minute as well, but that's $3M per year. There's still a three year commitment. To a DH no less. I'm still taking the odds on him staying.
Steve Lein Twins Daily Contributor Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I'll say this again, I don't think he gets claimed, and he's in AAA to start the year. But, I'd rather not take that risk, and would rather risk losing Dan San instead. Not certain this team should be getting older at this point in the rebuild..... edit: Dave Cameron has convinced me, he won't be a Twin at $3MM a year....someone will claim him. My thoughts exactly. That is not a prohibitive price. I dislike this move. A lot.

d-mac Verified Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Found a few articles that showed about evenness, and even those splits have changed since then. For instance, Grossman was listed as a guy who does better vs RHP than LHP. Seems that things can change, click, or regress with sample size and what not. Considering the weird past and present platoon splits of both Vargas crushing RHP in the minors and Grossman doing better vs RHP in the past, that Vargas should be playing 1B vs LHP and Grossman DH, and vs RHP...alternate the two and play the hot bat, as both have shown the ability to hit RHP in the past. I don't want Grossman roaming the OF. Players generally swing better from their natural side. (ex- Aaron Hicks). It's very difficult to have balanced left/right splits unless the player has a VMart/Beltran hit tool, players that likely wouldn't have platoon split issues to begin with. So again, why waste the energy on switch hitting?
d-mac Verified Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I do think this move increases the chances of lots of Sano at DH and lots of Polanco at 3b. Ugh. Sano is too young and athletic to be a DH only type.
nicksaviking Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I wonder if there has been an injury set back which the front office knows would stop any team from claiming him. It's not like wrist surgery comes with 100% satisfaction guarantee. But if this is just a straight up rejection of a player the previous regime valued, man, it makes you wonder if it's possible, even if slight, that Mauer might not be as un-releasable as we assume.
bluechipper Provisional Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 How will the Twins ever replace a 30 yo that hit 191/275/409 with a k rate in the 30s and no defensive flexibility.Who was also facing MLB pitching for the first time and battling an injury. Way to frame it though.

Well the Twins didn't have a DH on their roster until 2010. No, Jason Tyner doesn't count.

drjim Provisional Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Who was also facing MLB pitching for the first time and battling an injury. Way to frame it though. I'm not as big in to making excuses for 29 yo mlbers. I'm assume he'd be a little better this year, but he has to get a lot better. Just never really saw all that much at any point to give me much confidence. And he brings absolutely no other value.
Loosey Verified Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 great post....I can't tell if you actually mean that or are making fun of me . . . I'm leaning towards the latter.
drjim Provisional Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 Ugh. Sano is too young and athletic to be a DH only type. I agree. I don't think DH only, but I could see 30ish games there. Probably a good thing, allows him to play 155 this year.
drjim Provisional Member Posted February 3, 2017 Posted February 3, 2017 I can't tell if you actually mean that or are making fun of me . . . I'm leaning towards the latter. He's serious. It's a slight misapplication of the term "sunk cost" but the broader point is absolutely correct.
