Sano has not played at 3rd for a long time because he shattered his arm while practicing fielding at 3B. He may be the only professional third baseman in history to have done this. 

 

It was in the first game of spring training, not practice

 

His arm was hurt before that, did the rest and rehab thing, then aggravated it with the tear on that play.

 

It's definitely less common for position players across baseball, but the Twins currently do have another 3B-man who had tommy john surgery.

 

His name is Paul Molitor.

If they were keen on not using Sano at 3rd, wouldn't Polanco be the obvious choice rather than signing a FA, and move Sano to DH? Vargas then becomes a bench bat?

Once Carter went for $3.5m, I think that gave an overwhelming indication what the market thinks of middling DH bats.

 

Would you take Carter for 1/$3.5m or Park for 3/$9m?

 

I'd take Carter all day long. Not even a moment's hesitation.

I would sign him in a heartbeat. He can be the primary 3B and back up 1B. Sano would then DH most of the time, only playing 3rd when Mauer has a day off (which should happen every 7-10 days).

I would call this brilliant if the Twins actually do it.

Sano won't be a full time DH for at least 5 years.  Stop with the Sano to DH.

Absolutely, and I heartily endorse that decision.

 

My point is that if a team wasn't willing to bump Carter's one-year deal to, say, $4m... Then why on earth would they claim Park?

 

If Carter went for $7m, maybe some cheap team out there takes a flyer on Park. But not at $3.5m. That's Park's salary for one season.
