It's probably time to relax just a little

Last year the Twins started 1-6 but, frankly, they looked a lot worse than this years 0-7 team.  It's a horrible start but it really shouldn't make you re-think your ST position on the Twins, at least not yet.

WHO'S NOT RELAXED?

I agree, mostly. My frustrations are mostly carry overs from last year, repeating themselves this year (or off season moves / non-moves I questioned).

Other than Park, and maybe Buxton and Murphy, we all know what these players are. The hitters we've seen before aren't going to stay this bad.

Last year they were 14th in hits (out of 15 AL teams), 14th in ave, 15th in obp, 12th in slg. and 13th in ops.

The same team this year for the most part. Why are people surprised with how they have hit? Did people really think by some miracle they would turn into a good hitting team?

Did Perkins look worse last year?  Did the bullpen look worse last year?  Biggest issue with the 2015 team and biggest reason it did not make the post-season was the bullpen.  Does it look better this year? Fatal flaw fixed so this team can go to the post-season?

Just saying.  It is not just the 7 games.

Last year has nothing at all to do with this year. Especially winning 20 games in May. It is what it is. Fans deserve better.  My preseason position was that Perkins is cooked, Jepsen was fools gold, Fien should have been non-tendered, May should be in the rotation, Tonkin should be in Korea, Abad was a reclamation project that a full year would totally expose as another in a long history of Terry Ryan's misguided and paralyzed by hope moves, and the bullpen would be challenged, especially trying to hold the lead. I guess the advice is I should not re-think that?

It's all of the concerns people had in the offseason popping up immediately;

Bad Bullpen - check

Lots of Strikeouts - check

Outfield Defense Decline - check

And none of the positives have shown up yet;

Tons of HRs - Not Yet

Young Exciting - Not Yet

So only the bad has shown up so far.  It's just sad that the big weaknesses were ones most fans could obviously see and were calling on to be corrected, yet the front office did nothing.

Yes, an unfortunate start and it could be a long year - but there are too many things to look forward to this season to get down on them now.  Watching Buxton bloom, seeing Berrios make his debut, seeing Max Kepler get his shot and overall watching these guys grow into major leaguers.

Maybe the most interesting thing is to watch Sano deal with adversity.  Let's admit that it all came way to easy for him last year.  A little failure may be a good thing for him to become the perennial all-star we hope that he will be.

Way too many interesting story lines to get discouraged now.

 But, but........ Dozier and Plouffe say we have a playoff team!

They also finished in the middle of the pack in runs scored.  Which is about where I would still expect them to finish the year.

May should not be in the rotation, and Tonkin is better than the pitchers in Korea. Yes, you need to rethink that.

They were also tied for first in games played.

The panel would also have accepted "Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man."

0-7 is historically ugly, but friends, the Twins were 9-16 on May 1, 2006, a year in which they won 96 total. I think we can do better than 9-9 to end the month.

They were also 12 games back in mid July at which point Mike and Mike said stick a fork in them because they are done.  .   They are 4 games behind leading Chicago.  That can be cut in half in two games.     The 85 Twins won 2 to start the year then lost 9 in a row, then won 10 in a row and shortly after lost 10 in a row.    When they had the losing streaks they were never that bad.   When they had the winning streaks they were never that good.    This current team was 19-11 in ST with most of their wins coming later as teams were ramping up and they were scoring a lot of runs.   They were not that good.    They are now 0-7 and not that bad.   They are just playing that bad.

My opinion of this team hasn't changed a bit. Same as it was going into ST and same as it was going out of ST. I predicted 78 wins

Vell, I don't care about your silly panel.

Do you, like, believe in anything?

That '06 team was also coming off 5 straight winning seasons....I agree it definitely isn't panic time but apart from their crazy May last season the Twins were a .500ish club. They aren't going 20-7 again this May. So while it is only 7 games, the 0-7 hole they're in isn't totally insignificant for a team that played .500 baseball for the majority of last season.

Winning in clusters is pretty normal.  Last year, the Astros started 30-17 and went 56-59 for the rest of the season.  A few weeks later, the Twins had their best 47 game run of the season and went 27-20.  They were 56-59 for the rest of the year.

There are good arguments for why the Twins might be in a bad spot (regression, young player development time, etc) but win/loss clusters isn't one of them.

I posted this elsewhere yesterday, but I want to post it again here:

The Twins will win. I don't know how many games and neither do any of you. Too, too, too much gloom and doom. It's a freaking sport played by freaking grown men who make a monstrous amount of money. We as fans can do NOTHING to determine the outcome of any game or season. Being a fan is, in a fundamental way, is a ridiculous waste of time and energy! I wish everyone would please go on with their lives and let their interest in Twins baseball take a comfortable back seat. Enjoy the ride, whatever it is. If they suck so bad this year tune them out. Look at the Royals, riding high, drawing in hordes of fans. Everyone likes a winner. It draws in the everybodys of the world. Then watch them leave like rats leaving a sinking ship in a year or two when they start sucking again, which they inevitably will. Stick around or tune out, but please, if you can, laugh at the whole crazy world of sports and why we care so much. Thank you.

Ah, I remember the Twins 28-2 streak in late summer 2006. That was something else.

Time to relax is over. I was relaxed the first couple of games, not to concerned when the O's swept us. But the relaxation left then and has traveled many miles since.

What if it's exactly what my spring training position was?

The fact is, as everyone has heard already, no team has started 0-7 and made the play offs. Twins be the ones to change that? Maybe, I doubt it. The good part about this is that there will be no pressure on our young guys. Give em as many reps as you can and hope we see steady improvement over the year. Another upside is that we were by need to hear the phrase meaningful September baseball shoved down our throats as a sign of improvement
