Haley Outrighted, Sent Back to Boston

Justin Haley has spent most of this season on the Disabled List as the team's Rule 5 pick. However, his 30-day DL stint comes to an end on Tuesday, but with the trade for Jaime Garcia and Anthony Recker, the Twins have sent him back to the Red Sox.

I don't think Boston has much starting pitching depth. Doug Fister and Kyle Kendrick were their veteran rotation depth pieces and they've been brutal.

Sometimes you wonder why bother with the Rule 5. Enough of this type of player becomes available during the season.

 

At the most, Haley would've gone off the 40-man in the off-season and someone else might've claimed him.

 

Well, the Twins have to be happy. They get some more of that CASH they like to get for a player, half of what they paid out to have him take up roster space.

No kidding. Now that the pitcher is gone, I hope someone at the next press conference asks for more details/insight on the thinking behind that sequence of moves last year.

I don't really get why the Twins got Recker from Atlanta. The Twins already had 4 catchers on the 40 man roster and don't currently have room for another catcher at AAA (or the majors). I can only assume there's another deal near completion that moves Gimenez or one of the AAA catchers.

I don't have an issue with any team taking a flier on a Rule 5 guy. My problem is continuing on with the experiment when it pretty obviously isn't working. This passed that point long ago.

 

Having said that, I'd rather Haley start a game for this team than give Bart another shot.

If any of the Twins' AAA catchers (Garver or Ryan) would have been traded, that 40-man spot would have been Rocker's and would have not announced him coming over until that spot was cleared.

 

I think that Garver is likely promoted and something else must be going on.   FWIW I do not see Belisle with the club for much longer...

It seems fairly obvious that those moves were to parlay the #1 pick into a few g's for the Pohlad's.

Otherwise, you just take Haley #1.

Gimenez is a veteran guy, and a stand up guy in the clubhouse.  Must be a team out there that needs a backup catcher, or why add Recker to the 40-man. 

 

We do have Garver crying for promotion, so there's going to be something happening.

Boston had zero incentive to accept a cheap trade for Haley. They get him back now as a solid young-ish AAA depth starter who doesn't require a 40-man roster spot for another 2.5 seasons (with presumably little risk of being selected in Rule 5 again ).

 

As a Twins example, see Aaron Slegers -- what incentive would the Twins have to sell or trade him cheaply to another club right now?

I'm surprised the FO gave up on Haley at this point, but I'm pretty confident they made the right move. Haley seems to have low upside and is already 26, I don't really much value in him. Looking back, his selection in the Rule 5 draft now looks quite bizarre... but at least it's over with and it doesn't have to go down the J. R. Graham route (they kept Graham on the roster the whole 2015 season and then let him go just a month or so into 2016).

Well the twins got Johan Santana as a rule 5 pick so it has worked out once, but I think it might have been a different story had the Twins been 30 - 50 and in last place, then they probably give Haley more looks along with Gonsalves, Jorge, Romero, etc.... had the season been lost then theyd probably give some of those guys a few more chances, I remember Johan during that first year didn't pitch a whole lot and the Twins finished like 60 something and 90 something so it didn't really matter much that he was taking up the space.  This year however, the Twins are around .500 and have a shot of meaningful games in August and September.  So I think it was a matter of the Twins, this year just had no room for him.  Now whether he ever turns into something or not is a totally different debate, but I think sometimes Rule 5's, at least to me, can get caught up in how the team is doing that season.

The rules are very different than then. Almost no good, young, players are available now. People need tip adjust their expectations

Good luck to Haley. If it makes us feel better..... Miguel Diaz, who was selected 1st overall, has a 6.82 ERA and 6.33 FIP in 24 appearances for San Diego. Not like the Twins are missing out on a rock star here.

Worth the shot, and glad that this situation isn't lingering longer than it should.
