Teams out of contention have no reason to sign these guys and we should be near the first choices from teams in contention.

Interesting... We gotta land someone here. This could be like X-mas in August.

Yup, I want to wait for the full list of cuts before I make my wish list.  Bader might be nice, a solid reliever would be great.

Interesting all the cuts this year.  My suspicion is the new limit on September rosters has more effects than just who you can bring up.  In the past, a lot of these guys might have just sat on the bench and done nothing.  Now, actual players are needed.

I also wonder how much of this the FO was anticipating. It might explain some trade deadline things.  We shall see.

Honestly, I doubt they’ll claim anyone. If they are holding on to Luplow and Gallo waiting for the return of Buxton, Kirilloff and Castro they probably will be thinking why take on any of these guys when we’ll be getting Stewart, Buxton, Kirilloff and Castro back.

Particularly adding a big bat against lefties should happen, but I will doubt it until it happens.

Referring to the Twins on this post.

Id take Martin over Grichuk/Bader 100%. But I just dont think the Twins go that route.

I tend to agree but I don't think the Twins will call up Martin. I hope they at least put him on the 40 man on 8/31 or he won't be playoff eligible. In a perfect world, I would like to see the Twins put in claims for Moore, Lopez, and Bader in that order. If they get one, and it won't be more than one, they take Luplow's spot on the 40 man and if it's pitcher, they take Sands' spot on the 26 man or Maeda goes on the IL (I think his elbow ahs flared back up). I add Martin to the 40 man on 8/31, with Miranda going on the 60 day DL to create room, and add Varland and Martin as the 2 players on 9/1. I would waive Gallo today, or DFA him if they don't, so Castro can be on the 26 man after his paternity leave if that's necessary to create room.  Who goes to create room for Kirilloff and Buxton when they're ready depends on performance, injuries, etc. and the situation when they're ready.

Bader is a CF not pitcher.

I do wonder if the Twins should waive Gallo today and give him a chance to land on another playoff team. Maybe there is some team out there in need of a left-handed hitting OF/1B that would be willing to bet $2M on the chance that he gets hot down the stretch.

on a side note I guess this gives free agents something to consider when signing.  will they dump you at the end of August if you are having a subpar season?  IT would make it harder to regain lost value if you are not on a team the last month.

Harrison Bader, Mike Clevinger, Josh Donaldson.. players on what were thought to be contenders are dropping at a furious clip.

Oddly enough, the center field part is what is interesting.

I can't say I'm a fan of any of this, but the rules are the rules.

Lopez or Moore would certainly be an upgrade over Floro.

Grichuk or Bader would offer an upgrade over Luplow, and both could give Taylor a chance to rest. I just don't see much playing time for them if guys come back healthy and stay healthy.

It's not the MN nice way, but a truly cutthroat competitor could argue they should put in a claim on a bunch of these guys if they have a 40-man spot they're willing to sacrifice even if they don't want the player just to keep them away from other playoff teams. Especially the relievers. They absolutely have to claim Moore. No way you can let an AL playoff team get their hands on a lefty reliever you'd have to face in the playoffs when you're this bad against lefties. I'd guess Moore and Lopez are going to be the 2 most claimed players, and the Twins 100% need to claim them both and see if they get one.

I have thought about this sort of thing for quite some time and wondered why we haven't seen something like this sooner.

Logan Forsythe for example. After the Dozier trade we got Forsythe back in the deal. He was a pending free agent... we were out of contention so he served no purpose for the present and none for the future.

We should have just let him go after he was included in the deal. That was 2018... 5 years later... teams are finally listening to me. 😁

I don’t think any of the good pitchers will be available.  But, if one makes it you have to take them.

Not only would they help here (Lopez or Moore would be a godsend right now), but passing on one may land them on a future playoff opponent.

Nailed it.

I wouldn’t say it’s cutthroat necessarily.  It’s smart.

Can anyone tell me if they still have revocable waivers? or are all waivers now irrevocable?  I know when there were 2 trade deadlines, after the first one teams would pretty much place anyone and everyone on (revocable) waivers.  If they were claimed then they would just pull them back off waivers (which is why it was supposed to be confidential), but if they made it through without being claimed, then they could be traded.

Heck even Joe Mauer was put on waivers.

Now with just the 1 trade deadline, I am guessing all waivers are irrevocable?

I don't get why people are ripping the Angels for doing this.

They made a push and made some trades at the deadline. Then Trout is back to the IL and then those lose Ohtani as a pitcher.

If they all get claimed they free up some money and give them some roster spots to develop some young players.

If more teams were smart they would be doing the same.

I'd be all over Moore.  Grichuk is interesting, but with the return of Buxton coming soon I doubt they do it, even though he'd be a big upgrade from career journeyman Luplow.  I have to agree with the previous assessment that 2 years ago we'd be screaming for Giolito.  Now, he couldn't crack our rotation.

Posted

Grichuk absolutely. He's an immediate upgrade over Luplow. And while I don't know howbgood he is on CF, he's certainly logged time there. He might be an ideal RH OF bat for 2024. He can help now, and by getting to know the organization a bit better, might give us a small leg up to bring him back next season.

I'd take either pen arm, but I'm mostly interested in Moore. All due respect to Funderburk, adding a quality, veteran arm for nothing more than the remainder of his 2023 contract is a no-brainer, IMO. Nothing against Lopez, I just think Moore helps..well..more.

I'd take either one...along with Grichuk. I mean, we're going to be in the playoffs and didn't a single contract $ other than trading out Lopez for Floro. They can't afford a few $M for some "free" talent to help?

Posted

I know this was not expected and the MLB will likely fix this for next season but it’s ridiculous that one team could potentially get all these players. The fact that teams don’t move to the back of the order after a successful claim is bonkers. They’ll likely all get scooped up by Marlins, Giants, reds

Posted

Fangraphs just confirmed one team can potentially get every player put on waivers today. They won’t move to the back for making a successful claim. What an absolute joke. Manfred is the absolute worst.

Angel fans are pissed because of prospects they gave up to get these guys...not about the $. Fans have given up from a plethora of bone headed moves by Artie.
