Brandon Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 The Angels just put a bunch of players on waivers including Hunter Renfroe and Giolito and others. Do we claim any of them for the playoff run? Fatbat and glunn 2
chpettit19 Community Moderator Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Wow. That is a move you don't see everyday. Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez are interesting pen pieces. Giolito only if you're looking to bring him in and extend him. No real need for Renfroe or Grichuck I don't think. LA Vikes Fan, pierre75275, Dman and 2 others 5
GusGus11 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Its an abomination if we dont go for Grichuk(cant help it if a worse team wants him due to priority) .323/.388/.559 vs lefties We picked up Jordan freaking Luplow for gods sake. RUN. Matt Moore and Reynaldo Lopez both nice options too DJL44, Alex Wilde, GKuehl and 9 others 12
DJL44 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 The Reds were interested in Giolito at the deadline. Now they can have him for nothing. dex8425 and glunn 2
Vanimal46 Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 The pitchers will be instant claims. We will likely have the opportunity to claim one or both of Grichuk and Renfroe. They don’t look like upgrades to me, but I’ll let Falvey be the judge. On a side note, it only took one month for all of their good publicity of going all in to disintegrate. Ohtani should sit the rest of the season as well since they gave up. Cris E 1
LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Would love to get Moore and/or Lopez. Unfortunately, I think the waiver claim order is reverse order by record and I think at this point it's both leagues. The Twins have the worst record of any presumed playoff team but I got to think that a wild-card contender is going to grab these guys or at least Cleveland will grab them to avoid us getting them. Grichuk might be interesting but he has kind of sucked with the Angels. The earlier poster was right though, he certainly would be an upgrade over Jordan Luplow. I want no part of Giolitto. He can't help us this year, he completely stunk for the Angels, and he won't be back next year. Same for Hunter Renfroe. Decent stats but talk about empty calories, doesn't play much defense, can't run, rarely hits in the clutch, not much better than what we have. Grab Moore or Lopez if he can get them, Moore in particular. Think about Grichuk if he's available. The rest are not worth anything. SF Twins Fan, Doctor Wu, weitz41 and 4 others 7
Riverbrian Old-Timey Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 You have to consider all of them. 40 man decisions would be interesting but you have to consider all of them. Moore and Lopez would be upgrade over current members of the pen. Grichuk and Renfroe both could improve our right handed batters box. Giolito... surprisingly would be the one who wouldn't be an upgrade over current staff. Never thought I'd say that. Teams out of contention have no reason to sign these guys and we should be near the first choices from teams in contention. Interesting... We gotta land someone here. This could be like X-mas in August. Richie the Rally Goat, DocBauer, TopGunn#22 and 2 others 5

Grichuk is a massive upgrade as a lefty only specialist. Renfroe isnt hitting htis year so I wouldnt give him a roster spot. Youre about the pitchers. One of the NL wild card fringers will jump in and take them Im guessing. glunn 1
stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 The Angels put a bunch of pending free agents on waivers including RH hitters Grichuk and Renfroe and pitchers Giolito, Moore and Reynaldo López. All of these guys could help the Twins, especially the hitters.

Luckily its record based though and has nothing to do with us leading our division. So basically any AL wild card team with even a punchers chance has better record than us. Marlins, Reds, Giants, Dbacks are the ones to watch. They all still alive and can get relievers from us. And I definitely see a few of them wanting those relievers.
twins_89 Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Anyone know how the waiver claim order works? I know it goes by record, but is it AL teams before NL teams or are they all mixed together.

stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 It looks like these moves were made to save money for the Angels. The claiming period will run through the 31st, so anyone who claims the player will have to take on his contract (all of it). No one can wait until the claiming period is over because then the player wouldn't be eligible for post-season. Brandon, SwainZag, glunn and 1 other 4

I believe since we are leading our division the record tiebreaker with Dbacks and Red Sox goes to them(althouhg not positive). Guardians cant be dicks and blocks us. They move to back of the pack since they already claims Laureano a couple weeks ago.

So not much for any of them. Why did the Angels cut Giolito? They coulda at least QO and got a draft pick in the off season. Odd considering the awful trade they made to get him. Do you know if it is today's records that form the waiver order, or will it be the records on the 31st when the claim is settled?

Per what I read, the rule was that once you have placed one claim successfully you move to the back. Rules have changed over the years but I cant find anything saying that is no longer the rule. Could be wrong though.

LA Vikes Fan Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 ! just saw that the Yankees put Harrison Bader on Waivers. Worse against righties but actually much better against lefties - .355/.406/730(1.136) against lefties in 2023, but an awful .508 OPS against righties. Better fielder, runs better, and can play CF. Bader - 1.0 WAR, Grichuk 0.0 WAR. Do you guys like Bader better than Grichuk? I think I do. TopGunn#22, Twins33, ToddlerHarmon and 2 others 5

SteveLV Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Giolito is ineligible for a QO draft pick since he was traded at the deadline. CRF Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 I honestly can't recall a team doing anything like this before. To just put a bunch of players on waivers. It might have happened and I just don't remember it, but this is kind of shocking. Salary dump for sure. I don't know if we'd be interested in any of those guys or not. I think we maybe should be...I mean I'd take Renfroe or Grichuk over Luplow in a heartbeat. The relievers wouldn't hurt either. I don't know about Giolito...I'd take a pass on him. I'd probably take Clevenger before Giolito. The Yanks put Bader out there too. It's all pretty interesting. ToddlerHarmon and glunn 2

Brandon Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Author Posted August 29, 2023 I hope the league institutes a rule to prevent something like this from happening again. This is poor sportsmanship to up and quit like this. It's also unfair for all of the other teams to try to get in the mix and maybe get something for nothing. Baltimore has to be pissed as they worked hard to build through the farm only to have playoff bound teams get reinforcements from this before they can. It's one thing if its one player not performing getting designated but for 6 or 7 players. THats where it gets unfair. I think anyways. ashbury, Squirrel, bighat and 1 other 4
stringer bell Verified Member Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Honestly, I doubt they’ll claim anyone. If they are holding on to Luplow and Gallo waiting for the return of Buxton, Kirilloff and Castro they probably will be thinking why take on any of these guys when we’ll be getting Stewart, Buxton, Kirilloff and Castro back. Particularly adding a big bat against lefties should happen, but I will doubt it until it happens. Doctor Wu, bighat, SD happy and 3 others 6
