The old cliche lives on.

But, maybe there is an athlete living in Miggy's cavernous frame?

Either way, he will live or die on his ability to recognize the outside curve ball.

I am not optimistic because the loves to feed on that pitch.

The outside curve ball isn't Sano's problem. His biggest weakness is the number of swings and missed IN the zone.

Almost made through an ST without one of these.

Remember, journalists need spring training, too. They can't just get up to game speed with a "BEST SHAPE OF HIS LIFE" article the day after pitchers and catchers report.

Was it one of the free weights?

If so, hopefully he missed his foot!

.I don't think Sano's weight has all that much to do with his streaky hitting, but this could signal the return of the more disciplined version of Sano we saw working out with Nelson Cruz in 2019.

5lbs a month doesn't impress me, but at 247 lbs (if that's the number), it may help his mobility a little. Accelerating mass takes energy and the extra mass in Sano's body definitely slowed his swing and ability to adjust so losing excess baggage may help him a bit at the plate.

Sano's All Star value once laid in his ability to play above average 3B, now potentially relegated to DH because of terrible play at 1B more than his lack of range, I'm not sure where Sano really ranks on the depth chart.

At the very worst, the weight loss is great for his personal health and no matter which way it the baseball spins, that's a good thing.

During one of the telecasts, I think in 2020, Smalley commented that he drops his hands when he's batting, and when he does, he tends to not make contact. A few days later there was a report here, about Sano saying he needs to keep his hands up. If you watch him, it seems to be true. He keeps his hands up and makes better contact. Nothing to do with his weight, but if being lighter helps his mobility on first, or his stamina in general, all is good.

Heh, didn't know this was a meme thread, but okay :)

Should have known from the outset that it had about a 1 in 1 chance of becoming one.

With the amount of weight he has lost during his career, he should be around 180. (And my weight should be a negative number - been on the roller coaster a bit longer than he has.)

If he can hit .250+ he can weigh as much as he wants

Exactly. The weight issue has been an easy crutch to criticize Sano for. Is being lighter more likely to help with agility at first? Sure. Is being lighter more likely to help keep him stay healthy during the year? Sure. Is it going to help him avoid huge slumps where he misses pitches in the strike zone? Probably not.

Except the vast majority of the criticism of Sano's weight came when he was at 3B and obviously declining in defense because of his decreasing range as a result of his expanding gut.

I don't think there's a significant expectation Sano losing weight will stop him from striking out, but it sure won't hurt him. It's more likely to help him not be thrown out at first base on a weak contact grounder or get a few extra doubles.

Sano's career is in significant jeopardy right now. It would be in critical condition had he not turned things around last year in the 2nd half. Turning it around was an opportunity he was honestly only granted because of Alex Kirilloff's unfortunate wrist. Had Kirilloff been healthy, Sano likely wouldn't have seen nearly as much action and he'd be solidly relegated to a DH/PH right now.

Actually, his biggest issue is not catching up to fastballs.  His chase rate is pretty good, but his whiff rate is bad.

Much of the reason he missed pitches in the zone is he was missing on velocity.  Will the loss of weight help that?  Maybe.  If the reduced weight will get him moving faster on his swing to catch up to the high velo.  Maybe the issue was he just cannot hit high velo, but who knows.  We will see what he does.  I am not saying we should expect a huge bounce back, but he has shown stretches in his career of huge numbers.

Just trying to improve his chances of hitting his weight. Problem is that both Sano (and Buxton) have yet to prove that they are reliable day to day players. Both have nice up sides but you still don't know what you are going to get. Can Rocco pencil Sano ( and Buxton) into his lineup card on a consistent basis?

Meme thread, snark thread. To-may-to, to-mah-to.  :)

Just watching them play this afternoon and noticed Sano looked more fit and then I see this article.    Good for him - whether it impacts his batting or not.

I heard Delmon Young showed up at camp looking better than ever, too.

Does that mean he showed up street clothes? That would be much better.
