Blake Verified Member Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 This will make some interesting situations come Spring Training: The fact that the Twins have offered arbitration to and agreed to contracts with Grossman, Adrianza, Escobar and need a back up catcher, and Vargas is out of options, they cannot go with an 8 man bullpen, unless they make a trade. Under contract and out of options starters: Santana, Gibson, HughesUnder contract and starters with options: Mejia, May, BerriosUnder contract and out of options relievers: Rodney, Reed, Duke, Pressly, Boshers, Kinley (effectively)Under contract and starters with options: Duffey, Rogers, Hildy, Chargois, Enns, Slegers, Moya I suspect that Berrios starting is a given. There are 6 RPs without options in the pen. Unless they get another starter Hughes/Mejia/May are fighting for 2 spots in the rotation and the loser will get the last spot on the pen or get optioned. This means that only one of Duffey, Rogers, Chargois, Hildy can start in the majors, unless they make a trade. That's why the Twins should be all over the phone trying to make trades at this point. You think Hughes is going to be a viable option? I don't see it, but, then again, I was counting Mauer out last year. Of course, we all know how that turned out. sploorp 1
drjim Provisional Member Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Twins should have no problem pushing to $135mil if a Darvish deal is on acceptable terms (especially years). I'm not much of a fan of multiyear deals for free agent relievers, but it does seem like they got a good deal compared to earlier signings. Doctor Wu, Twins33, DocBauer and 2 others 5

This doesn't mean that they won't look at a big trade like Cole/Archer but that would also be a very atypical move for the Twins. Riverbrian, DocBauer, nicksaviking and 2 others 5

Old Twins Cap Verified Member Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 Don't underestimate the strength of signal this sends to Darvish and Arrietta. Twins going all in to win a World Series over the next number of years, offense, defense, bullpen. Hard not to like it. And yes, unless I am mistaken, this is the Twins' first money committed in 2019. Big rollers don't think in terms of one year. So payroll shoots up 35% in 2018? Who cares. By 2021, you have a World Series Title and another generation of Twins fans who idolize going to Target Field with their kids. It's about long term and if Falvey and Levine can present a credible case that there will be a route to growth, profit and overall return by choosing their path. Jerr, sploorp and tarheeltwinsfan 3

Brandon Verified Member Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 There's one less Darvish suitor as the Astros aquired Cole. Of course the Yankees may step up their efforts to sign Darvish as a result... Riverbrian, sploorp and glunn 3

Dman Verified Member Posted January 14, 2018 Posted January 14, 2018 I was surprised that since he was offered a three year deal that the Twins didn't offer an option for the third year. Guy must believe in himself and will test the market again after two years.

Of course, we all know how that turned out. That's not the point. Whether or not Hughes is a viable option, he is out of options, so the Twins need to deal with him and they owe him more than $26M over the next 2 seasons.

This doesn't mean that they won't look at a big trade like Cole/Archer but that would also be a very atypical move for the Twins. Only Darvish can decide if he comes here. If he comes or doesn't... I'm already buying into the indicator that the Twins have demonstrated it isn't business as usual by simply being in the mix for him. They wouldn't be in the mix without a significant dollar amount thrown in that direction. I'm pretty happy today. MN_ExPat, nicksaviking, glunn and 9 others 12

They might be wiser with resources and might have some relationships that help them close the deal, but even Terry Ryan would notice they had financial flexibilty (he was instrumental in creating it!) and a need in the rotation. You would have to first assume that he was blind and completely inept and that would be a terrible assumption to make. My opinion of Terry Ryan is mostly favorable. Even if I felt it was time for a change. However... There really isn't any history of Ryan shopping at the top of the FA pile or trading for an established veteran with a significant price tag. Ryan never got a chance to prove that he could or would spend when necessary. The timing may not have been right or... well... I don't know. MN_ExPat 1

I think the fact they're in on Darvish is encouraging, but I also remember the old FO mentioning players they inquired about at trade deadlines. Wherever Darvish ends up, I think the offer MN puts on the table will truly determine how differently we can expect this new FO to operate. Riverbrian 1

I don't see how Rogers and Hildy are left off unless they implode this spring, but I guess we'll see what happens.
