A veteran manager for a veteran team, he is the opposite of Asmus.   He will be 60 soon, he is in the twilight of a career. That matches well with the core of the team.

A lot of us thought he'd get the manager job a couple years back... but I'm surprised at the amount of interest in him from other teams. I thought he was going to be a bench coach for the rest of his career, but I guess he's getting another chance. I don't think it'll work but I wish him luck.

Interestingly, the Twins never had five straight 90 loss seasons under Gardy. That seems like a bit of false narrative there.

 

He's a good manager, hope he does well there.

Certainly makes more sense for Gardy if it's his only offer. I thought he'd make a lot of sense with the Mets.

 

Don't get it at all for the Tigers, but if they want to burn a couple mil for a scapegoat, sure, why not.

Ron Gardenhire reportedly set to become Detroit Tigers' new manager

Former Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire will be named to the same position with the Detroit Tigers, sources tell the Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

Gardenhire spent this past season as the Arizona Diamondbacks bench coach under manager Torey Lovullo. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in February and underwent surgery in April. He missed five weeks of the season before returning to the team in May.

The 59-year-old replaces Brad Ausmus, whose contract expired at the end of the season and who went 314-332 (.486) over his four-year run.

A contract agreement or length of the deal is unknown. It is likely the Tigers and Gardenhire still are negotiating a contract.

The decision was made after Gardenhire impressed general manager Al Avila in an interview at Comerica Park on Tuesday. He interviewed with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

In 13 years with the Twins, Gardenhire posted a 1,068-1,039 regular-season record (.507 winning percentage) and led the club to six American League Central titles and the 2002 American League Championship Series.

During the process, Avila interviewed a number of candidates, including Marlins third base coach Fredi Gonzalez, White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing, Giants hitting coach Hensley Meulens, Astros bench coach Alex Cora and Rockies bench coach Mike Redmond. Internal candidates Omar Vizquel and Dave Clark also interviewed for the position.

After announcing Ausmus would not return for the 2018 season, Avila said Major League managerial experience would be preferred. With Gardenhire, the Tigers get plenty of that.

Not sure he’s the manager for a rebuild. His inclination is to play veterans over inexperienced players. He also has a history of throwing inexperienced players “under the bus” when they make mistakes- as all inexperienced players do. IMO, he was poor at putting players in position to succeed. Jacque Jones as a leadoff hitter for example. Doug Mientkiewicz (and Joe Mauer frankly) as third place hitters. One that perfectly sums up Gardenhire’s ineffectiveness though is when Michael Nakamura made his MLB debut. Instead of bringing him into a low leverage situation, he entered the game in a save situation. Keep in mind, this was not an uber prospect or a future closer. He had a deceptive motion similar to Neshek or Hildenberger. And then a week or so later, was brought into a game without warming up because Gardy made a second coaching visit in an inning. I have no idea if the way he was handled shortened his career or not. I don’t think it helped.

Because no other managers want anything to do with that mess. And both parties are probably well aware that they'll get a new manager before the Tigers are competitive again.

The real question is how many times do we think Gardy will get ejected next year? And how many of those ejections will come while playing the Twins?

Now I'm not saying Gardy is Torre, but it's silly to say that he isn't a good manager or can't do the job. I'm sure they talked through what they're looking for, and while wins or losses aren't necessarily the criteria due to his players, he may meet a lot of what they're looking for. He knows this game well, even if a collective 'we' may not think it makes a ton of sense.

The Tigers rebuild will take many years; Gardy may be seen as being able to keep the big-contract veterans appeased as the team retools.  In three-four years, when the team actually has young players to develop/play on the major league roster, the Tigers can switch gears and let Gardy go.

I think Gardy is a perfectly fine manager and would have liked to see him on a team like the Mets (a team potentially with talent that maybe just needs a new voice), but Detroit makes no sense for him other than as a money grab. Might have been his only option though.

Not a good comp Seth. Torre took over a very good playoff team. Gardy is taking over the worst team in the league, just starting a re-build with a middling farm system.
