See, bunting totally works.

 

To successfully score after a bunt, all you need is an overly energetic runner at third, a twitchy pitcher on the mound, and a balk call.

 

Happens every day.

Lol.

 

Well, and a shift. I think that also added to the runner-on-third's twitchiness because that pretty much gave him carte blanche to be extra twitchy, too. Er, or more energetic. I guess twitchy was for the pitcher. Whatever. The shift aided and abetted, too.

Jason Castro's the unsung hero here. At the plate, he didn't call time to adjust his batting glove or whatever it is that batters feel the need to do all the time. Without Castro's steely nerves this fancy play never develops.

The sad thing is, non-sense like this will only make the manager feel more embolden for more stupid bunts.

Hmm, let's see. Yeah, we'll give up an out here, so that we can have Adrianza, who's hit a ball deep enough to score a run from third about four times this year, and then when he fails, we'll leave it up to that hit machine Castro.

Rosario, a fast runner on second and nobody out.

 

Buxton in 2017 w/runners in scoring position: .180/.286/.197, 41% K Rate, 73 PA

 

Buxton in 2017 when bunting: .583 BA, 4 Sacs, 16 PA

 

Maybe Pickler showed Molitor the stats.

 

i hope they aren't making decisions on that few at bats.....

 

I had a lot more issue with Dozier bunting earlier (if I understand the time lines correctly)...

In all seriousness, that wasn't a terrible place to bunt. Tie game, runner on second, seventh inning.

 

With Buxton, you have a good chance he'll reach safely. If he doesn't, he advances the runner to third with one out.

 

I love to complain about bunting but that was an acceptable time to call a bunt. I would have let Buxton swing away - after all, it was the seventh inning with no outs - but whatever. I don't have to agree with every decision 100% all the time.

We could've used Buxton's lifetime slash line and his lifetime bunting record and it would come out the same. Combine Buxton's bunting stats with their knowledge of his bunting ability, I would say I sure hope they don't ignore the stats they have.

I hate sacrificing, but that was an acceptable place, IMO. 7th inning, get the go ahead run to third, where it doesn't take a hit to score him.

 

As it turned out, it didn't take a hit.

Obviously there is a need to plate that run and with no outs, if you sac him over you get one shot at a fly ball into the outfield (Adrianza didn't come thru) then hope for a hit or a mistake (yeah balks!) if that doesn't work out. I understand the logic and the timing, but a one-run lead doesn't feel safe with this bullpen. I'll take it but I want MOAR RUNS.

- Bunt hits (No one on base): 20

- Sacrifice Bunt attempts/successes:  55/27 (49%)

Doesn't seem like Molitor calls for bunts too often.

on the game thread, it was pointed out the TWins have the 2nd most sacrifice bunts in the AL, and the worst success rate in all of baseball....so, ya, stop bunting before the late innings.

Agreed, which is why I wouldn't have called for a bunt... but it wasn't the most egregious example of bunting I've seen recently.

So we are making up for our incompetency with frequency     :) .    That is my main gripe - we bunt so often yet we stink at it.  At least if we are going to bunt that often practice it to make sure we are better at it or if you are the manager and see that a guy can't bunt don't call for a bunt.
